lehigh to play swarthmore tomorrow visitors have defeated perm state lafayette and pennsylvania this season tomorrow night the brown and white basketball team will meet swarthmore in taylor gym the contest bids fair to be one of the best played on the local floor this year for both teams are going at a fast pace swarthmore has made an envi able record this season having de feated such teams as pennsylvania lafayette and perm state the team is almost entirely composed of new men but they have de veloped a one man team work to a high point of efficiency the lehigh five has had an in andl out season but has shown to good advantage on their home floor and should be at their best to morrow night the line-up swarthmore positions lehigh place r.f mccarthy voder l.f donovan stow c hess larkin r.g straub donnelly l.g..wysocki c coach keady will arrive at that time to take charge baseball will begin in earnest at lehigh within the next two weeks in preparation for the opening game of the season on march 30 with albright the call for candidates for the team will be issued in the near future although the exact date cannot be announced as yet as it depends upon the arrival of coach keady coach keady has been spending the winter at his home in milford mass since leaving lehigh last fall at the close of the football season he has not as yet informed the management as to the exact date of his arrival to assume the responsibility of giving lehigh an other winning team there will be an exceptionally good chance for men who have had some baseball experience to make the team this year as there is a dearth of material in several of the positions the pitching staff and outfield appear to be particularly in need of added strength as it is the policy of the coach not to make a cut in the baseball squad during the season all men who go out for the team are assured of a chance to learn the fine points of the game under one of the best coaches in the country the schedule as arranged by manager wagner is to go before the athletic committee for ap proval at their immimy meeting on thursday several changes have been made in the schedule recently which tend to improve it addi tional games at home have been arranged with the usaacs and with temple university the completed schedule will be announced in an early issue probable tennis schedule class of 1919 will not have annual banquet effort to promote conservation at a meeting of the junior class held last friday morning in drown hall it was decided not to have the annual class banquet this year careful consideration was given the matter by the members of the class and when the vote was taken it was almost unanimous in favor of dis pensing with this year's banquet the present food situation which makes needless expenditures of food an unpatriotic waste and the un settled conditions among the mem bers of the class at the present time were factors in bringing about the decision for a banquetless year as far as the junior class is con cerned in addition to taking up the question of a banquet the class heard a report from r w ludlow of the junior prom committee on the progress which is being made with the arrangements for the junior prom the prom is to be held on the evening of friday april 12 the evening preceeding the graduation of the senior class dancing is to last from eight o'clock until one and is to include twenty numbers music to be furnished by the herzberg orchestra of phila delphia the subscription is to be four dollars with free admission to the members of the senior class as the prom also includes the june hop which is generally given by the juniors in honor of the seiiiors during commencement week a committee composed of t c zeller chairman i v keith and b f lauder was appointed to or ganize the junior lacrosse team which is to play in the interclass lacrosse league the class num erals of the winning team will be engraved on the lacrosse cup and the junior team promises to make a spirited bid for the honor phi beta kappa elects notice friday march 8 has been set as the date when the seniors will hold their class union at the hotel allen allentown the committee in charge of the affair has arranged more for a class dinner than for a banquet as in previous years those who have arranged for the banquet have been very successful in obtaining speakers for the affair schuyler b knox 93 who is ex president of the alumni associa tion and walter r okeson 96 present secretary of the alumni association and ezra bowen 13 assistant professor of economics have consented to speak at the din ner tickets may be purchased from members of the committee before the night of the dinner in order that confusion may not set in that night lutheran students form new club at a meeting of the phl beta kappa honorary society wednes day february 27 1918 the follow ing men were elected as members of the society wm g barthold 8.a 18 bethlehem penna ; jacob a bishop 8.a 18 cham bersburg penna harold e o'neill 8.a 18 altoona penna ; walter r penman m.e 18 hazelton penna ; charles a wol baeh 8.a 18 riegelsville penna phi beta kappa is one of the oldest and mosjt renowned honorary societies students who maintain a high scholarship in arts and science courses and a limited num ber of technical students are eli gible manager coffin has recently sub mitted the following tennis sched l ule for the coming season most of the games have not been definitely settled as yet but it is extremely likely that all of the games will be played as scheduled although there are four varsity men in col lege there will be plenty of oppor tunity for new men to get in some of the games especially as the seniors graduate early in april the probable schedule is as fol lows : april 17 hill school april 20 haverford april 24 lafayette april 26 c c of n v # april 27 morning stevens in stitute of technology april 27 afternoon colum bia may 1 lafayette may 4 rutgers may 8 pennsylvania * games away brown and white tossers no match for west pointers in one=sided contest score 42=21 cranston wins for the cadets by aggressive playing and accurate shooting the varsity was badly defeated in a one-sided contest played against the army at west point on saturday afternoon the final score was 42-21 the varsity was unable to do anything during the first half the period ending 24-6 the west point men had the ball in their own hands a great deal of the time and when it did go to lehigh it was only to be lost by close guard ing on the part of the army de fense the west point team ran up twenty-four points in the first half largely through the playing of cranston a plebe he played his first game for the army in the le high contest and immediately gained fame by his aggressive play ing and accurate shooting from scrimmage and the foul line he accounted for sixteen of _ the army's points during this period during the second period , the varsity played a better game and were able to register fifteen points while the army was scoring eighteen during the first period the army or rather cranston scored at will but the lehigh de fensive improved to such a degree that army scores from the field were limited to five during this period while the varsity by de cided improvement in team play were able to see the basket now and then not much can be said of the game from the lehigh standpoint as it was army from start to finish they have an aggressive team which has been winning con sistently all season and have held their opponents to low scores due to the variety of close guarding game they played saturday the line-up and score : lehigh 21 positions army 42 mccarthy f halm donovan f cranston hess c vidal wysocki g keyser straub g kreber goals from field hahn crans ton 5 vidal 4 kreber shrader gorman 2 mccarthy 2 donovan 2 hess wysocki 2 goals from foul cranston 9 out of 11 gor man 5 out of 6 ; straub 5 out of 9 ; mccarthy 1 out of 1 wysocki 1 out of 1 substitutions ericson for hahn gorman for cranston mulenz for gorman shrader for vidal wells for kreber mckee for wells wysoeki for hess maurer for wysocki referee ed thorpe la salle umpire kock yonkers y m c a university dance very successful notice sophomores track managers scarce the call for assistant manager ship of track has not been very well answered as only three men have up to the present time ap peared for this position these men are m b tate chas g goodell and david e baver there is still opportunity for men of the class of 1920 to get in this competition candidates report to manager sargeant wednesday at 2 p.m at taylor gym board meeting the brown and white board will meet in the board room drown hall tomorrow at 1 30 p.m at this time editor-in-chief and managing editor for the com ing year will be elected the 1917 18 board pass out of office and the new board take charge there will be a meeting of the class in drown hall wednesday march 6 at 12:00 m at which prospects and advisability of hold ing a class dinner will be discussed also secretary will be elected only men who have paid class dues will be eligible to vote at this and the coming annual elections dues may be paid to w h/hunton treasurer 145=pound event results in pe culiar victory for v.m.c.a grappler score 20=14 mike dorizas former perm star shows old time form gives exhibition bout last saturday afternoon in the taylor gymnasium the brown and white wrestling team met with a defeat at the hands of the strong central y m c a team of philadelphia losing by the score of 20 to 14 nevertheless the match was hotly contested and not until the close of the 175-pound event in which schultner of central y m c a finally managed to gain a fall over booth was the meet taken out of the hands of the lehigh grapplers all the events were cleverly contested and all were falls but the 135-pound event in which wuerz won a decision over marlowe in the 115-pound class captain cozzolino threw mulford early in the bout but the latter fought hard and it was some time before his shoulders were pinned to the mat by an arm and neck hold the next bout bevier won in short order gaining a fall over his man with a body hold in two minutes and eighteen seconds in the 135-pound class wuerz and marlowe fought hard for some time wuerz soon had his man on the mat however and managed to keep him there the remainder of the bout winning on decision the next bout between loeser and bernum was the most exciting event of the afternoon loeser up to within forty-three seconds of the ending of this bout had the better of his man ; in fact a fall was im minent on two occasions but a false move gave the philadelphian the upper hand and a quick victory with the head scissors and the bar and chancery hold in the 158 pound class latimer threw basil in quick time gaining a fall with the crotch and neck hold in one minute and thirty-four seconds in the next to the last event booth was soon struggling on the mat with schultner of central y m c a on top after strug gling for nearly two minutes booth squirmed out of an almost sure fall only to have his shoulders pinned to the mat shortly after wards by a bar and chancery hold in the last bout captain manley was no match for the well-known mike dorizas and after playing with him for a while the big greek put him down with a head hold after the meet was over dorizas gave several exhibition bouts showing various holds and the \ proper way to avoid them at one time he was wrestling with two of the brown and white wrestlers at nq time giving them a chance for a fall 115-pound class captain coz ( zolino central y m c a threw , mulford lehigh with an arm and ' neck hold time 3:48 125-pound class bevier le ; high threw spiesman central y i ml c a with a body hold time - 2:18 135-pound class wuerz le ; high won from marlowe central ; y m c a on decision time - 9:00 continued on fourth page democracy discussed by dr rothermel at sunday evening meeting dr a s rothermel principal of keystone state normal school was the speaker at the regular y m c a meeting last sunday night in drown hall the sub ject of the address given by dr rothermel was a current phrase of which much has been heard in the last few years ' ' making the world safe for democracy and democ racy safe for the world in ad dition to the address several so prano solos were derivered by mrs george butterworth in his talk dr rothermel said that constructive forces are operat ing in social life which are doing more and more each year to elimin ate the forces of evil from the com munity he told of the different things for which this country stands and affirmed that the united states produces the loftiest type of manhood and womanhood the address given by dr roth ermel follows in part the best men in the land are making a strenuous effort to see that every institution in the country will be a safe place for j^oung men and young women there are some homes and comiinunities which are not free from danger for children but constructive forces are doing more than ever before co eliminate this danger and to put into opera tion intelligence and courage for the benefit of such children ' ' a statement was recently made in congress that a certain corpora tion had amassed millions during these trying times but this corp oration was made up of individuals whose sole object was to make divi dends such a statement as this gives us reason to doubt that de mocracy will ever be safe for the world no matter whether there is a democratic form of government or not if we are trying to get other people to adopt the christian faith we must be in a position to say that ! it has been productive of the high est fruits of success at home as there is little industrial justice and great discrepancies in wealth and apportunity in this country we must admit that after all christ ianity has not given us everything that we would expect it to produce we must remember that in every country there is an element which is not well born with individuals of this character the re ligious element must enter into struggle it is not fair to make the charge that because there are in dividuals who have been brought up in christianity but do not obey its doctrines the christian religion is not the greatest force working for mankind ' ' there never was a stronger call for progressive intelligent chris tian leadership in the whole land than there is today the home church and civic life are charged with the duty of helping to inspire this leadership there are no bet ter men for this than those found in the universities and colleges of the land when this country was estab lished the reins of government fell into the hands of the common man and he has demonstrated his ability to hold them from the great body of common people have come men who have been leaders in the church state professions and all : walks of life and only because this continued on fourth page last friday evening the lu theran students of lehigh met at the parish house of st peter's church at the corner of packer avenue and vine street where they formed a permanent organiza iton to be known as ' ' the inkwell ' ' professor raymond walters gave a short talk to the students express ing his interest in the club a constitution which had been drawn up w t as adopted and the following officers were elected president w h hunton 20 vice-presi dent a m kuhlmann 20 ; high threw spiesman central y i ml c a with a body hold time - 2:18 135-pound class wuerz le ; high won from marlowe central ; y m c a on decision time - 9:00 continued on fourth page democracy discussed by dr rothermel at sunday evening meeting dr a s rothermel principal of keystone state normal school was the speaker at the regular y m c a meeting last sunday night in drown hall the sub ject of the address given by dr rothermel was a current phrase of which much has been heard in the last few years ' ' making the world safe for democracy and democ racy safe for the world in ad dition to the address several so prano solos were derivered by mrs george butterworth in his talk dr rothermel said that constructive forces are operat ing in social life which are doing more and more each year to elimin ate the forces of evil from the com munity he told of the different things for which this country stands and affirmed that the united states produces the loftiest type of manhood and womanhood the address given by dr roth ermel follows in part the best men in the land are making a strenuous effort to see that every institution in the country will be a safe place for j^oung men and young women there are some homes and comiinunities which are not free from danger for children but constructive forces are doing more than ever before co eliminate this danger and to put into opera tion intelligence and courage for the benefit of such children ' ' a statement was recently made in congress that a certain corpora tion had amassed millions during these trying times but this corp oration was made up of individuals whose sole object was to make divi dends such a statement as this gives us reason to doubt that de mocracy will ever be safe for the world no matter whether there is a democratic form of government or not if we are trying to get other people to adopt the christian faith we must be in a position to say that ! it has been productive of the high est fruits of success at home as there is little industrial justice and great discrepancies in wealth and apportunity in this country we must admit that after all christ ianity has not given us everything that we would expect it to produce we must remember that in every country there is an element which is not well born with individuals of this character the re ligious element must enter into struggle it is not fair to make the charge that because there are in dividuals who have been brought up in christianity but do not obey its doctrines the christian religion is not the greatest force working for mankind ' ' there never was a stronger call for progressive intelligent chris tian leadership in the whole land than there is today the home church and civic life are charged with the duty of helping to inspire this leadership there are no bet ter men for this than those found in the universities and colleges of the land when this country was estab lished the reins of government fell into the hands of the common man and he has demonstrated his ability to hold them from the great body of common people have come men who have been leaders in the church state professions and all : walks of life and only because this continued on fourth page last friday evening the lu theran students of lehigh met at the parish house of st peter's church at the corner of packer avenue and vine street where they formed a permanent organiza iton to be known as ' ' the inkwell ' ' professor raymond walters gave a short talk to the students express ing his interest in the club a constitution which had been drawn up w t as adopted and the following officers were elected president w h hunton 20 vice-presi dent a m kuhlmann 20 ;
