there will be an important meet ing in packer hall on wednesday april 3 at twelve o'clock noon the purpose of this meeting is to elect a college secretary for the ensuing year the election of assistant managers of basketball and wrestling will also be held at this time lacrosse prospects unusually bright brown and white lacrosse team slowly rounding into shape first game with swart hmore if the prospects for a good lacrosse team could be judged by the number of candidates out for the sport it would be safe to say that this year as creditable a team will be turned out as ever has rep resented the university fifty five candidates have reported since the first call was issued february 15 practice has been held daily on the upper field for the past month preliminary drill in the rudiments of the game was given the players for two weeks this is now sup planted by practice games which are played each afternoon george p flick 14 is coaching the attack while k m raynor 14 is instructing the defense men those among the squad who are playing attack are alden bachert gilman haussmann keith lauder e gonzales f g-nnzales wooley schubert schultz rein hardt blasius lott reynolds wentling the men playing de fense are berneker rhoads blake shockley wey stettler jenness nesselbush young wil son lucas munklewitz mitman ryerson gardner spagna whit more ruf shaner smith the squad has not developed enough for the men to be given permanent positions but each man is being tried out to find out what position he is best suited for the team will not be chosen until april 13 the day of the swarthmore game class lacrosse teams are in the process of organization the first interclass game will be held april 20 the freshman team has not enough candidates and more first year men are urged to come out and make their class team a suc cess y m c a to hold an easter service senior class book contains over a hundred photographs and biographies snappy feature section collection of photographs and sketches adds much to appearance of book the approach of commencement the date set for the appearance of the 1919 epitome finds that volume running slightly behind schedule work is being pushed ahead how ever at top speed and the pub lishers hope to be able to make up some of the lost time and have the books ready by april 13 the senior class book this year contains the photographs and biographies of one hundred and six men many of whom are now in the service but who were anxious to be with the class in this record the general plan of arrangement is much the same as in previous years the class ballot has been omitted thus eliminating a waste of space and labor the opinions of the class on almost every topic under the sun are summarized and discussed of no little interest is the faculty ballot which shows some unusual elections to the var ious offices the three remaining classes fol lnv in order as usual and the fra ternities ocupy the customary space a wealth of new and splendid cuts add much to the general ap pearance of the book sketches by lawall 18 are especially striking and are far superior to the average a collection of new photographs also does much to make the epitome more attractive the photograph ers have slipped into our everyday lives to portray us as others 1 see us as well as having been on the job for everything unusual a long and snappy feature sec tion wherein all the wit and comedy from the best of collegiate comedi ans is gathered for the entertain ment of the reader is deserving of much praise most of the material is genuinely funny and constitutes really the most entertaining part of the book the actual work of printing is now well under way and should be nearly finished by the end of the week the work of binding and covering will take up the remaining time former editor of brown and white promoted first game of the season to be played with the army nine at west point albright game cancelled practice game played last wednes day team as yet not def initely decided the opening game of the base ball season scheduled for tomor row afternoon with albright col lege was cancelled by the albright management so that the season will not open until wednesday when the team journeys to west point to play the army efforts were at first made to schedule an other team to take the place of albright but in view of the cold weather and the poor condition of the team it was considered best not to play on saturday coach keady has put the men through a strenuous workout dur ing the past few days in spite of the cold weather on wednesday afternoon a seven-inning practice game was played which served to give coach keady a good line on the many aspirants for the team the first team as selected by the coach for the practice game gave a fairly good idea of the probable varsity line-up pfeiffer the washington high school pitcher was in the box and gave a good ac count of himself although the cold weather was not ideal for pitching herrington showed up well behind the plate but must beat out several other good men for the catching position in the infield savaria and dono van showed up as the best men at third base and short-stop coffin and straub looked promising at second base the first base position appears quite unsettled with dor kin and knerr as leading candi dates in the outfield captain mathag occupied his old position in center field while thompson and beck took care of the other outfield po sitions mathag is practically as sured of one outfield position but there will be spirited competition for the other two positions the competition for assistant manager of baseball has narrowed down to the following eight men the others having dropped out be cause of scholastic conditions 6th of april the anniversary of the declaration of a state of war between the united states and germany the amount terms and con ditions of the loans are dependent on further legislation and will be announced as soon as congress has granted the necessary powers secretary mcadoo chose the 6th of april as the day to open the campaign as the most fitting date to call t for a patriotic response to the summons to duty to every american to ask from the people at home the same fervent patriot ism that actuates our gallant sons on the battlefields of france and on the waters of the atlantic assistant professor ezra bowen 13 and w v mccarthy 18 would like to meet all the " l " men who are now in college a meeting will be held on satur day march 30 at 1 30 p.m in the reading room of drown ability mr okeson's report shows that lehigh in proportion to its number of alumni and students has furnish ed a large contingent for active war service so far as this has been drawn from the student-body it has been the result of spontaneous movement and action by the men enlisting or of the operation of the selective service regulations the university authorities have felt that their duty lay in impressing on the students the views urged by president wilson by the secretary of war and by the chief of engi neers to the effect that students should pursue and complete their college work to the end that the country may not lack an adequate supply of trained men we believe that lehigh s duty is the educa tional one of training men thor oughly to render efficient service not to act as a recruiting depot to send out immature mien for service that others can as well or better render the experience of eng land canada and our own country shows that trained college-bred men are in the main the ones who win to leadership and certainly in the case of students pursuing courses in engineering it is highly import ant that their training should be well and thoroughly carried out before they attempt to offer their services the government has recognized this in the order recent ly made providing for the furlough ing back to their college work of men studying engineering who elect to enlist in the engineering corps provided that in the opinion of the faculty evidenced by the affidavit of the president of the in stitution men so endorsed by the faculty may be regarded fairly as deserving a place qualitatively in the first third of the young men who have graduated from the in stitution during the past ten years such endorsement may be given to a student in any of the four classes so far eighteen men have been certified from lehigh and have been accepted several of the teaching force have entered the army or navy and prof j w richards has from the beginning of the war given valuable technical service of a high character as a member of the naval consulting board at the request of the federal authorities we arranged to give a special radio course in the second term senior class — which professor esty found he could accept in place of other regular work y the course in ' ' ship construe j tion and ocean transportation which professor mckibben institut 1 ed this year and personally gave i during the first term has received i flattering recognition in that pro fessor mckibben has been invited by the government to visit all the leading technical schools of the country and urge upon the students the importance of supporting the government's shipbuilding _ work this summer by enlisting in it to the end that our undergraduate students may be season bevier highest scorer local men tie with cornell grapplers for second place in intercollegiates last saturday evening the le high matmen completed their sea sons activity by tying with cornell for second place in the intercolleg iates held at columbia the sea son was a very successful one for although at the start coach sheri dan lacked all of last year's exper ienced l men as the season pro gressed an aggressive team was rounded into shape which has three victories and three defeats as its record the grapplers took such meets as university 1 of pennsyl vania columbia university and university of virginia and lost to three of the strongest aggregations on the mat — the navy central y m c a and perm state the first tryout of the year took the form of a hotly contested bout with the allen town y m c a on january 4 which resulted in the favor of the varsity 16-5 the second meet with the allentown matmen was also won 19-11 and resulted in one fall and two de cisions for lehigh and one draw on february 26 the varsity wrestlers tossed the perm matmen to decisive defeat 24-8 bevier loeser booth and manley secured falls and captain latimer won on decision all the bouts were made up of quick action and were well fought perm took two events both being decisions at the end of nine minutes in the 115-pound class mcdermott of perm secured the hammer lock on reynolds and the bout went the full nine minutes with the decision given to mcder mott although the hold had been legitimately used in that bout it was further debarred from the meet bevier won the shortest bout of the meet by pinning the should ers of rose to the mat in one minute fifteen seconds with the head scissors and arm hold latim er got the decision over strauch after nine minutes almost obtain ing a fall but for the timekeeper's whistle captain ketterer of perm defeated wuerz on decision in a hotly contested match with the central y m c a of phila delphia on march 5 the brown and white team lost with the final score of 20-14 it was not until the close of the 175-pound event in which schultner of the y m c a finally managed to secure a fall over booth that the meet was taken out of the hands of the le high matmen captain cozzolino of the y m c a team threw mul ford with the arm and neck hold in three minutes forty-eight sec onds bevier won the 125-pound class in short order with the body hold in two minutes eighteen sec onds in the 135-pound class wuerz managed to keep his man on the mat long enough to secure a decision in the most exciting bout of the afternoon loeser who up till forty-three seconds of the ending of his bout had the better of his man was defeated by bernum on a fall with the head scissors and bar and chancery latimer was victor over basil in the 158-pound class in quick time gaining a fall in one minute thirty-four seconds continued on third page the next meeting of the y m c a will be held sunday march 31 at 6:15 p.m in drown hall this will be the first easter service that the y m c a has ever held and should be one of wide interest the university has been fortunate in securing as the speaker of the evening dr w n schwarze of bethlehem dr schwarze is a prominent citizens of the/city being now one of the board of school directors and also a professor at the theological seminary he has travelled quite widely through most of this country and in parts of europe his experience and wide association with the interests of young men places him in a posi tion of peculiar interest to college students dr schwarze is an ex cellent speaker and his easter mes sage should be of interest to every lehigh man there will be only a few more meetings of the y m c a and it is hoped that as many as can do so will attend as an additional attraction mr c e kleckner 21 will render several cello solos plans are being completed for a prosperous tennis season the courts have been fixed and are ready for the prospective men to begin practice as soon as
