widor from 4th organ symphony finale 0 d k sponsors theme contest for freshmen subject of theme to be devoted to methods of improving lehigh prizes offered tomorrow night at 7:30 the brown and white mermen will meet the swimmers from cor nell in the home pool in taylor gym this is the first swim ming meet that lehigh has ev er had with cornell and a keen contest is anticipated the brown and white natators are determined to repeat their feat of last week in winning from swarthmore 45-14 little is known of the red and white mermen or of the relative strength of the two combina tions as there has not been any rival that both teams have met lehigh however is conceded to have the advantage and is a strong favorite to win the lineup will probably be the same as that of last week's meet hayes and van nort or blood will represent the brown and white in the dives webbe will swim the 440-yard free style raleigh and ellis the 50 yard dash leader and ahlberg the 150-yard backstroke and raleigh and hertzler the 100 yard race the 200-yard breast stroke swimmers will be select ed from leader coxe or pel lizoni while the relay team will be composed of hertzler o*callaghan ellis raleigh or price the brown and white var sity quintet will meet swarth more's basketeers on saturday evening at eight-thirty o'clock on the mary lyons school floor at swarthmore a preliminary game will be played having been defeated on the court by lehigh for the past two years the garnet are an xiously awaiting their chance for a come-back in some re spects they have the advantage for the lehigh men will be playing on a foreign floor and except in one instance games played away have proved disas trous this season for the brown and white swarthmore has to her credit a victory over princeton at whose hands le high sustained a defeat on the other hand swarthmore was beaten by haverford whom the brown and white easily overwhelmed the garnet also met defeat on tuesday in their games with pennsylvania against a combination that was weaker than the one which barely defeated lehigh earlier in the season on the whole it looks as though the brown and white men will have the better of the fray this is the last game of the season for the lehigh five public speaking contest revived lacrosse players start practice eighty men respond to coach lattig's call for candidates generous prizes offered by alumni to stimulate in terest in oratory the final rehearsal of the mustard and cheese chorus previous to the choosing of the cast by ned wayburn was held last wednesday evening president ridsdale carefully outlined the plan of rehearsals and furnished all information regarding the program of pro cedure missal from the show ned wayburn will arrive next sunday to pick the chorus and cast squads two or three men will be chosen for each part so that the actual cast will not be known until two weeks before the presentation of the show the coach will come out the following week and will conduct another series of try outs for the purpose of again reducing the cast nine prin ciples will be featured in the show and some twenty nimble footed dancers in the chorus the rehearsals will begin in about ten days and will take place every afternoon from two to five and every morning from seven to eleven a strict rec ord of attendance will be kept so that a large number of cuts against a member of the cast will result in an immediate dis about fifty aspirants for rialto honors appeared at this rehearsal and the outlook for a successful show is exceptional ly favorable under the able supervision of ketterer the mustard and cheese show pro mises to be the best lehigh has witnessed in recent years lehigh will participate in the nation-wide observance of the 200-year anniversary of the death of sir isaac newton one of the earliest physicists the main feature of the local obser vance of this date will be an address by paul r heyl phy sicist of the bureau of stan dards at washington known as a lecturer throughout the country and especially noted for his methods of weighing the earth which have made him particularly famous in the scientific world his lecture will be on thursday march 17 and he has chosen for his sub ject a study of nature mittee of the faculty ' which is in charge of this celebration has planned to make it an oc casion on which all the under graduate societies can get to gether invitations are being issued by the committee to each campus activity ' although the undergraduates are invited to this lecture the program will not be open to the general public the com members of the faculties of the colleges in the lehigh val ley will be invited guests of the committee which will con sist of dr a a bennett dr h a ullmann and prof bar ry macnutt in connection with the observance of the an niversary of newton's death mr leach the librarian has placed on file several early edi tions of newton's books to gether with discussions of his work by other authors pennsylvania's beta chapter of phi beta kappa has pledged eleven members of the senior class these men are the high est ranking students in their re spective courses this year the college of arts and sciences takes the lead in the number of students to se cure this distinction six of its seniors were elected they include w s jones j m mal loy e h schaub l e broad b a mccarty and v a con cilio three members of the business administration were also chosen they are n h smeltzer a l henry who was graduated in february and f h wilhelm only two engineers both chemicals were honored they are g v mc gurl and r j butz both of these men were elected to tau beta pi honorary engineering fraternity last year lehigh's chapter of phi beta kappa was founded in 1887 and will observe its fortieth anni versary next month profes sor williams a lehigh alum nus and founder of the present chapter of tau beta pi is also a charter member of phi beta kappa its present officers are professor j e stocker presi dent prof r p more vice president prof p m palmer secretary prof m j luch treasurer continued on page four membership in this national honorary organization is one of the highest distinctions which can come to an undergraduate lehigh finished its home sea son last wednesday evening in a thrilling victory over juniata by a score of 30-26 smith and the schaub brothers finished their basketball careers in tay lor gymnasium earl schaub was in action only a few min utes because of a sprained an kle which he sustained in prac tice last week and which pre vented him from playing in the lafayette game last satur day juniata started the scoring but it was not long before ber man sank a goal for lehigh the team displayed excellent passing and team-work before the game was far advanced and the first half ended with le high leading by thirteen points it was in the second half that juniata entered the fray with renewed spirit trailing by thirteen points they continued fighting and were soon within two points their defense in this half was exceptional they held lehigh to nine points while scoring eighteen lehigh's playing was ragged in the sec ond half and it seemed as if they had used all their fight in the beginning of the game nev ertheless with but four min utes left to play lehigh got the ball from center using much precaution in their pass ing they worked ating room and hear lecture illustrated lecture on brazilian bridge by steinman and grove varied program rendered before large catasauqua high school audience the combined musical clubs the omicron delta kappa freshmen theme contest will be well under way within a week the contest which is sponsored by omicron delta kappa and the english depart ment is the first one ever at tempted it will include all freshmen the writing of a theme for the contest has been made a requirement of the freshman english course the theme which should be limited to 500 words is to be on the subject of improving lehigh univer sity these suggested improve ments should deal with a par ticular phase of the university such as its buildings activities clubs or curricula the faculty at its meeting monday in the memorial build the first meeting of the can didates for the lacrosse team was held last monday at 4:30 p m in the trophy room there were about eighty men who answered the call of coach lattig
