dr price speaks welcomes the entering class stirring talks made by student leaders nine touchdowns made by vic tors thirty men used by varsity pres't fayette avery mckenzie of fisk university re ceives degree to an entering class of over 300 men dr drinker made a short ad dress at the fifty-first annual open ing exercises of the university which was held in the chapel on wednesday afternoon last dr drinker's talk follows : the university opens its new year under good auspices the in coming freshman class is some what larger than usual but not in excess of the number of wiiich the university can take due care ' ' our plant is in good order the completion of our athletic grounds due to the generous gift of mrs schwab justifies in the complete ness and beauty of the construction the pre-vision of our loved alumnus charley taylor to w t hom and to the architectural genius of henry hornbostei and the engineering skill of charles w leavitt we ow t e its conception and plan we welcome the advent in sayre park of the additional fra ternity houses recently erectedi the university in its growth gives evi dence of constantly increasing so lidarity of being lehigh has passed the stage of youthful growth and with its semi-centennial has come in the student body a realization of lehigh's mission of lehigh s lead ership in service and that the time is here when the deserved reputa tion of our alumni for good work has its reflection in a student body who realize that in their hands le high's reputation largely rests for honest work good citizenship man liness and gentle bearing we may well be proud of the stand in the public service of the country that the university has taken and is taking in the great questions of the wise conservation and development of our national resources — in forestry — in na tional movements looking to pre paredness and in the support of the growing sentiment for a league of nations to enforce peace among the peoples of the earth the close of the great war when it comes will inevitably bring to the world unprecedented changes in political and business relations and it will be the duty and the privilege of the trained college-bred thinking man to take active and efficient part in the great work when that call comes lehigh men will not be found continued on fourth page the largest freshman class in the history of the university over 300 members witnessed the fifty first founder's day exercises in packer memorial church last sat urday morning at eleven o'clock many of the townspeople and alum ni were also present the found er's day sports which usually fol low the exercises were postponed on account of the late opening of the university dr talcott williams director of the columbia school of journal ism was the main speaker he paid tribute to asa packer founder of the university and to lehigh s work along educational and public service lines he said in part asa packer was born 110 years ago he was one of those who in the first half of the nineteenth cen tury carried across the blue ridge the resources of civilization and opened to the nation the coal of pennsylvania his generation was one in which men made personal fortunes and die 1 individual own ers of great enterprises when he died in 1879 after founding lehigh university a new generation of leaders and creators of industry had come who organ ized great corporations from asa packer's death just short of two score years ago these two issues have been settled in regard to these great organizations one whether these monster corporations in pro duction transportation distribu tion railroad and trusts togeth er should be above the law and the other issue whether the final owners of these corporations should be the few or the many the speaker at this point went into many details of asa packer's life the degree of doctors of laws was conferred on president fay ette avery mckenzie of fisk uni versity nashville term a bache lor of science graduate of lehigh in the class of 1895 dr mckenzie was presented by professor robert w blake of the arts and science department dr h s drinker then conferred the degree class book committee fall lacrosse practice nominations for senior and juni or arcadia positions made other business while the freshmen were attend ing the hygiene lecture in packer hall the upper classes held the first college meeting in drown hall last friday morning at 11 o'clock dr drinker opened the meeting at the request of the senior class nresident a bach with a few re marks after which business mat ters were taken up nominations for arcadia positions from the junior and senior classes were held they are as follows : seniors g e lees r l mc cann h c day ion w a rich ards f l magee a eligible to elec tion to the arcadia at the next meeting the meeting will be held next friday in drown hall by the three upper classes the men who are eligible are : president of junior class r wolcott president of sophomore class w whigham captain of baseball c e twom bley captain of lacrosse e l jen ness , captain of basketball k s crichton captain of track p l mcgrath manager of baseball r.l colby manager of lacrosse f.e portz manager of wrestling g c kehrer editor of the brown and white w w gilmore editor of the burr g b wal ters business manager of the brown and white and manager of h kirk patrick athletic representative at large g e lees dormitory chief r g cook in voting for these men it should be remembered that honesty and fitness for the position should be considered instead of what they have done for the college it was decided that the students show their support by turning out to parade on saturday evening and escort mr c m schwab to the eagle hotel the 1917 class book committee was elected after college meieting last friday and organized satur day the committee is d r brobst g m levy r l mccaun w a richards and w w gil more chairman sophomore class meeting all candidiates for lacrosse should report to either manager f e portz or captain e l jenness in the trophy room of the gymna sium at 4 o'clock every afternoon except wednesday when they shall report at 2 o'clock epitome elections all report for cheering practice lehigh completely swamped al bright in the second game of the season last saturday by the score of 61 to 6 the game was the first game played on the completed stadium and the field which has been resodded was a pretty spec tacle to witness although the game was better than the ursinus game albright had such a weak defense that it did not really give the brown and white players a chance to show their real worth the game was replete with long runs and forward passes no less than nineteen forward passes were used by lehigh during the game lehigh used about thirty men in the course of the game and many of the new men played very pleas ing games the second string back field composed of herrington hurley iteuer and wysocki went in during the second period and their work was smoother than the work of the first team in her rington coach keady has a find me c arty also showed up well at end it did not - take lehigh long to start off at the beginning of the game by a string of line plunges and end runs the ball was steadily advanced down the field and pushed over the lime by ty hal sted who has the honor of making the first score in the completed stadium from then on the game was a runaway for lehigh at the end of the first period coach keady s proteges had amassed a total of 20 points and at the end of the first half buchanan and l f knight cheering practice will be held on taylor field wednes day afternoon at four o clock every man should be present coming before the first big game of the season this prac tice should be filled with plenty of enthusiasm let all be on hand and develop this important feature the annual freshman reception under the auspices of the y m c a was held in drown hall last friday evening the reception was unusually well attended not only by freshmen but as well by upper classmen men of the faculty and their wives every effort was put forth by the local secretary mr j m frey the y m c a cabinet and the com mittees to make the affair one long to be remembered as the most suc cessful interclass and social event of the year that they achieved their purpose would be but a mild appreciation — it was the best ever ! a bach jr 17 the president of the y m c a before introduc ing the speakers thanked the ladies of the faculty and the university in behalf of the association for the cakes and ice cream donated by them for the occasion dr drinker 71 the first speak er of the evening welcomed the in coming class commending their splendid spirit of stick-together ness and co-operation he asked that all the present lehigh stu dents work for the honor and good name of their alma mater as their predecessors alumni of fifty years of college preparedness have done dr henry r price 70 presi dent of the board of trustees and lehigh s first first baseman was the next speaker he expressed his ap preciation at being chosen to ad dress the freshman class at the re ception his first experience in such a capacity he said that all college men should come to their college with a definite purpose to which they should adhere rigidly until they finally attain the culmination of their college course students should strive alike for scholastic and athletic proficiency bosey reiter was next called upon and after the loud applause had sub sided lehigh s fighting orator launched forth on an eloquent ha rangue not alone eloquent but in spiring full of pep and rock bottom truth prof reiter talked on habit the advantages of good and the danger of evil habits he said it is easy to dam a river at its source but at its mouth — impos sible so with habits be they good or bad they are very easily started but are well nigh impossible to cut short near the prime of a man's life put your whole heart into your work do everything you do well ; acquire the habit of study ; and get the spirit of determination don't give up and fight god hates a quitter ! selections by the student orches tra and piano solos by 0 e le wine 20 had previously been en and the tonsils help to purify the blood however we are fast be coming a catarrhal race and thus are losing the use of our tonsils the body has numerous cavities the important ones being the head thorax and abdomen the head contains the brain the thorax the heart and lungs and the abdomen which is separated from the thorax by the
