freshmen win founder's sports class of 1920 captures track and football 1919 wins baseball game hotly contested teams in three events closely matched many thrills furnished the freshman class demon strated its athletic supremacy over the sophomores by winning a majority of the founder's day sports last saturday afternoon on taylor field the relay race and football game were won by the freshmen while the baseball game went to the sophs only however after a hard battle upon the football game really hinged the outcome the fresh men had been conceded the relay race and the sophomores the base ball game in both instances how ever predictions were almost up set the relay race was won by a great finish by the freshman cap tain downer while the baseball game was won by a 3 to 2 decision by winning the majority of the contests the freshmen will be al lowed to dispense with their regu lation caps on sundays the first event of the afternoon was the football game which re sulted in a 7 to 3 victory for the freshmen waltz intercepted a sophomore forward pass in the first half and ran 40 yards for a touchdown the sophs made their only score when kennedy kicked a field goal from the 30-yard line kennedy oberrender and thomas played best for the sophomores while waltz straub and davidson starred for the class of 1920 the line-up 1919 ' positions 1920 bucher l e noll roseribaum . .. l t time of periods 12 minutes the track event was one of the closest races ever seen in an inter class contest doan starting for the sophomores managed to gain a three-yard lead over greenleaf by the end of the first lap for stall 19 and haney 20 finished the second lap with the sopho more still leading lawrie the third man for the freshmen cut off a little of this lead running against bailey 19 capt schultz started off like a shot in the last lap and got about a 10-yard lead on downer captain of the fresh man team but the latter in the last 100 yards made a wonderful spurt and finished about five feet continued on sixth page arcadia board elected at college meeting student body elected governing board republicans organize last friday morning the student body met in drown hall for the purpose of electing the arcadia for 1916-17 from the list of men eli gible for election the following were chosen r w wolcott 18 w whigham jr 19 e c twom bley 17 r l colby 18 f e portz 17 e l jenness 17 k s crichton 17 p l mcgrath 18 w a richards 17 l a dawson 18 g e lees 18 e c david son jr 18 and v b staats 18 junior representatives a bach jr 17 president of the senior class is ex-officio mem ber of the board j mckay 17 is a junior representative elected last year at the close of the election a rep resentative of the hughes college men's league addressed the stu dent body pointing out the aims of the club in an effort to organize a branch of the league at lehigh the speaker showed how college men must at some time become convers ant upon subjects of a political na ture he developed his argument along general lines merely outlin ing the work of the league and pointing out its advantages an or ganization of the branch followed with e c hummel 17 as presi dent and r s lambert 18 sec retary civils will meet the first meeting of the civil en gineering society will be held on thursday october 26 in the phys ics lecture room 1 at 8 p.m sharp after the main discussion the so ciety will adjourn to fritz labora tory where a series of tests will be run it is especially urged upon each freshman in the civil engi neering course to be present glee club glee club practice last saturday was poorly attended there being but nine of the members present ensemble work occupied the after noon a quartet will be formed to furnish music at the various college functions first and second tenors ar-e in demand and all students who are interested should report tomorrow at 1 30 p.m in drown hall faculty reception an informal reception was given in drown hall last friday evening at 8 o'clock by the faculty in honor of the seventeen new instructors no special program was prepared for the occasion the main object be ing to give the newcomers an oppor tunity to become socially ac quainted with each other and also with the other members of the teaching force after the introduc tions refreshments were served this function has taken on the aspects of becoming an annual af fair the committee in charge of the reception consisted of mrs wil son mrs lambert mrs walters mrs shields mrs richards mrs hall mrs drinker and mrs em err board men notice there will be an important busi ness meeting of the brown and white board tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock in drown hall who's who and why at lehigh a carefully compiled list of the men leading affairs this year save for reference list is arranged for convenience of the old men and the new _______ in the course of the college year frequent references must be made to the men who are heads of the various organizations in order to make this process of finding the right man to answer the question easier the 1916-17 who's who at lehigh is published the list is as complete as possible at this time some men who were elected to po sitions last year have since that time left college hence a vacancy it has been considered advisable to allow the positions to remain off the list in order to prevent con fusion in case of any errors cided upon the first regular meet ing will be held sometime in the near future the time and place to be announced later chemists meet the first meeting of the chemical society will be held in saucon hall thursday october 26 at 7:30 o'clock at this meeting short talks will be given by student members p h drinker 17 will speak on ' ' niagara electrochemical works ' ' and h f w johnson 17 will give a paper on coke the so ciety's membership is made up of men taking the b.s in chemistry and the chemical engineering courses it is especially urged up on the freshmen that they be pres ent and become acquainted with the upper classmen and members of the faculty lehigh eleven surprises yale brown and white warriors hold old eli to two touch downs yale 12 lehigh 0 strong blue team finds varsity tough proposition harry legore stars lehigh playing a good defensive game held yale to two touchdowns on saturday at new haven harry legore by a spectacular run of 63 yards made the first score of the afternoon and bob bingham ac counted for the second and final touchdown of the matinee both goals were missed and the final score was 12-0 although the result of the game was not as close as that of last year it shows that lehigh has a very good team yale was a heavier team and tad jones has instilled i the yale spirit in the men lehigh also was not primed for the game as they were last year — the game being taken the same as an early game coach keady having his eye on the penn state and lafayette games looking at the game from this angle the contest was not a de feat but almost a victory lehigh could not penetrate the blue line and relied mostly on for wai'd passes many of these were '■>■■•■rty completed and the brown and white had their opponents un easy during the entire game how ever only two out of fifteen reached the outstretched hands of a lehigh man lehigh s one chance to score came at the middle of the second period when an intercepted for ward pass netted 30 yards and placed the ball on yale's 10-yard line here a series of forward passes were tried but they all lehigh s line which is the weak part of the team held well at dif ferent times in the struggle and several times the elis were forced to surrender the ball on downs the most consistent gains by yale were made on split tackle plays which seemed to bother lehigh the brown and white team to a man played in a highly creditable manner tate played the best game of the afternoon in the opinion of an impartial spectator he was in every play breaking up interfer ence getting the man with the ball or making a hole for a lehigh man to go through brunner cheno weth and pursel also starred brunner s handling of the ball when throwing forwards was good although he sent the ball a little too far for the end men to get legore played the splendid game which was expected of him in his 63 yard run he bowled over seven le high men bingham and jacques also put up good exhibitions all in all the yale backfield will be a hard proposition for any team to the game started by lehigh kick ing off against a strong wind to yale's 35-yard line after an ex change of kicks yale marched the hall steadily down the field to le high's 8-yiard line bingham then hit left tackle for 7 yards but fum bled the ball on the 1-yard line brunner recovered the ball and halsted kicked out to lehigh s 30 yard line at
