student committee of seven to confer with faculty committee a meeting of the men interested in a military course at lehigh was held last saturday afternoon in drown hall the meeting was called to order by president george kinter 17 prof frank p mckibben head of the department of civil engi neering and chairman of the faculty committee on military science read a letter from the president of the university dr h s drinker who was unable to be present in person this letter ex pressed the sincere interest of the faculty in the project and stated that the idea of a course in mili tary science has been under dis cussion in the faculty since the army reorganization bill of this year made possible the placing of an officer of the regular army in each school and college which has one hundred men who will take the course that the undergraduate interest is great enough to warrant the in troduction of such a course is shown by the fact that on a pri vately circulated petition over one hundred signers : were obtained within three days the students 1 ' interests are vested in a committee of seven which is to confer with the com mittee from the faculty dr drinker's letter follows i note a call for a student meet ing in drown hall to consider this matter on saturday afternoon it is one in which i am much inter ested the university has taken an active and leading part in the estab lishment and forwarding of the summer military instruction camps held during the summers of 1913 1914 1915 and 1916 and the president of lehigh is chairman of the governing committee of the military training camps associa tion president drinker and professor mckibben attended on tuesday of college sentiment upon political situation to be ascertained by vote friday and saturday balloting will take place in brown and white room drown hall plans have been made to conduct a straw ballot on the campus dur ing the latter part of the week the vote will be taken friday and saturday ballots will be given to all registered students members of the teaching corps university offi cers and administration officers the last ballot may be cast as late as 6 o'clock saturday afternoon the ballot will contain the names of the presidential candidates in the order of the vote cast for the candidates of their respective par ties in 1912 thus the nominees of the democratic republican so cialist prohibition and socialist labor parties will appear in that order aside from this a vote will be taken on the question of woman suffrage there will be a ballot box in the brown and white office first floor of drown hall while stray ballots may be placed in the boxes of the paper located in drown and coppee hails the boxes will be open fri day and saturday from 8 a.m to 6 p.m announcement of the number of votes cast by each class and the faculty will be made at the close of each day's balloting the result of the straw ballot will be pub lished in detail in the tuesday number of the paper the game was the roughest that has been played here for a long time and frequent penalties were meted out to both sides by the officials le high suffered most by the officials rulings although neither team had many opportunities to score the varsity passed up a fine chance m the third period when quist inter cepted a lebanon forward pass on their thirty-yard line he raced to the four-yard mark before being brought to earth by capt mackert on the first play maginnes made two yards through center on the next play he went well over the line before going off side but the riefeiree ruled otherwise and the ball was put in play two feet from the goal-line chenoweth tried to carry the ball over on the next rush but was thrown for a loss a forward pass was then attempted but was grounded when chenoweth made a poor attempt to pass to mccarty shortly after this brun ner attempted a drop-kick from the 30-yardi line but it was blocked the team had no other chance to score until the fourth period w t hen brunner kicked a pretty goal from the field while standing 32 yards from the uprights lebanon val ley had no opportunities to make a touchdown but tried five placement kicks on his fourth attempt mackert succeeded 1 in putting one over from the 43-yard line his first attempt barely missed the up right post but his second and third attempts which were from the middle of the field especially are urged to attend meetings of their societies good programs interesting talks and refresh ments to be feature at each meeting foreign born citizens of the lom munity enrolled student instructors the night school which has been conducted for foreign born citizens of the community and which has been an established custom of the university for the past several years is again in operation this year organization classes were ef fected last week and last evening regular work began with the class in english the work is under the direct supervision of prof hughes of the university who is assisted by students of the upper classes as instructors with the exception of the class in electricity which will be in charge of an instructor from the department of electrical engineering of the university the classes will be conducted a follows : english monday and friday arithmetic and algebra monday and thursday geometry and trigonometry tuesday and friday ; mechanical drawing mon diay and wednesday mechanical design monday and wednesday ; electrical course monday and thursday to which will be added a course in german and business english if enough prospective stu dents apply all classes will be conducted in christmas hall and start promptly at 7:30 p.m the school in the past has been a great opportunity and proved of great benefit to many for whom it has been the only chance to gain a first hand knowledge of those studies which will make these stu dents better citizens in the com munity the scope of the school is becom ing wider every year and as the opportunity presents itself new and higher classes of study are offered if any student in the university knows of any person in the vicinity to whom the school would be of in terest and to whom it
