mcgovern scores only b & w fall six day tour frosh notice on friday night of this week at 7 30 o'clock in drown hall the freshman class will hold a pre-spring smoker featuring novel en ertainment arrangements its purpose is to create the necessary spirit preliminary to the banquet season two speakers pi delta epsilon plans satire journalistic luminaries plan to publish house party comic tea dance the scoring they were instru mental in securing the down fall of the maroon as their passing was a prime factor in placing the ball in a scoring position but the playing of the forwards was remarkable ced smith and mo schaub worked exceptionally well to gether their shooting was the most accurate they have dis played this season being by far the feature of the game smith bore the brunt of the at tack during the first half while schaub scintillated in the last period schaub was also continued on page four with lehigh leading in the scoring by four points and with only fifteen seconds to go in the heavyweight bout yale scored a fall winning the wrestling meet last saturday by one point up until the time of the last match the score stood 14-10 which meant that only a fall would give coach speaks at col lege lecture officers elected politics topic showing marked superiority from the very outset the le high varsity quintet handed a crushing defeat to the maroon in the game on saturday eve ning at lafayette's memorial gym by heaping up a score of 42-25 the brown and white eagemen clinched their second consecutive victory over their arch rivals thereby establish ing beyond doubt lehigh's bas ketball claims for the present court season throughout the entire contest the visitors held the advantage leading by a wide margin as the final gun sounded playing a hard and fast game geary's charges displayed the acme of cooperation their playing was undoubtedly the finest exhibition they have shown this year the defense was well-nigh invincible so close was the guarding and consequently the leopards were forced to resort to long-range shooting assuming the part of the aggressor from the start the brown and white five func tioned as a well-oiled machine although billmeyer and ber man at guard and e schaub at center scarcely figured in class when dodd going to the mat early threw keller of le high in the time of 7 minutes and 17 seconds in the next bout captain miller of yale holder of the inter-collegiate title in the 158-pound class managed to throw long of le high after six minutes of hard wrestling lehigh's hopes soared when lehr won from the yale man with a pi delta epsilon held a meeting at which plans were discussed to publish what is known as a razz sheet at house party time this sheet will contain a great number of comments on differ ent phases of college life and especially puns on students and members of the faculty f.t will most likely be printed on colored paper similar to that which is used for most of the tabloid newspapers which are so prevalent at the present time although these sheets have become very popular at a large number of colleges they have not been introduced at le high prior to this year as there will be quite a bit of ex pense incident to the publica tion of the paper pi delta ep silon intends to give a tea dance on march 26 to help de fray the cost as three houses are planning to give dances on that day care can be exercised in the selection of the orches tra since the opening of college in september pi delta epsilon has been working constantly to improve the quality of the pub lications of the university this has been directed especially toward the brown and white in which have appeared two new columns the athletic and news columns through the ef forts of pi delta epsilon lehigh university calender addresses on current colle giate problems and the election of officers featured the organ ization meeting of the local chapter of the american asso ciation of university profes sors held last thursday eve ning in drown hall the event marked the entrance of over twenty lehigh professors into the ranks of the noted national society the group elected professor a a bennett president pro fessor r m smith secretary and professor p m palmer treasurer at the conclusion of the balloting professor percy hughes spoke on the future curriculum of the american college while the subject of professor smith's later talk was types of world litera ture professor hughes said that the essentials of a curriculum need not include the questions of mental discipline or of uni form culture but of a common intellectual language he pro posed a so-called inclusive course which all students would be required to take this includes general subjects such as those relative to world prob lems world literature in eng lish histories of the sciences readings in philosophy and the political social and economical history of man the speaker also recommended specialization throughout a college career and expressed the opinion that the pupils should be sectioned in terms of ability he conclud ed by saying that good expres sion in speech as well as in writing and the ability to use a foreign tongue in interest in thoughtful reading to show how to read intelligently and to acquaint the student with with the opening night of the annual mustard and cheese show approaching the club has settled down to serious work and development in every line is fast taking place the book for this year's show is being written by paul ketterer and jack mckinnon and is nearing completion as yet the authors have not decid ed upon a name for their brain child but the scene is laid in the west with a crowd of eas terners running a ranch many amusing and peculiar circum stances are encountered by these people in their work and their contacts with the wes terners ketterer has issued a call for all competitors who wish to work on the business staff and he has them all engaged in col lecting ads for the program for both the local and the out-of town performances to date alumni clubs of philadelphia york and reading have agreed to finance productions in their various home towns and with a performance in said about the pro posed lehigh publication to serve for literary and scienti fic purposes the general sen timent of the members is that a magazine recognizing the best serious thought of the un dergraduate body would result in raising the intellectual stan dards of lehigh considerably the club will participate in the university commemoration of the two-hundredth anniver sary of the death of the great scientist isaac newton which will fall on march 17 summary : liberty high school out classed the frosh wrestlers in a dual meet staged at taylor gym last saturday evening by a score of 16-8 the bethle hem lads captured all but two bouts securing falls in the 115 and 125-pound classes and time decisions in the 135 and 175 pound divisions lehigh was handicapped as a result of in juries sustained by badgley in the tryouts held during the week and also because of the fact that liberty high had no heavyweight clarence lehr showed up well for lehigh scoring a fall in the quick time of 3:09 as did silverman who scored a close time decision ov er his opponent 115-pound class kalman liberty threw woodward le high with bar and chancery time 7:15 . 125-pound class moirello liberty threw last thursday the college had the pleasure of hearing mr william w roper speak although mr roper is best known as the coach of the princeton football team in which capacity he has had re markable success he is also a member of the city gouncil of philadelphia and has been very active politically mr roper devoted most of his time to the subject of pres ent-day politics especially as it affects college men one of the greatest changes that has come over the country in re cent years is the change in the attitude of students toward public affairs during the war there was no group of men that contributed a greater percen tage of its number to the cause of their country than did the college undergraduates but since that time interest has fal len off to such a degree that a very small number take even enough interest to vote for the young college gradu ate the best way to show an interest in his community and to become known is to take an interest in politics during his spare time soon he should be come well enough known that he will be asked to run for some minor office from which he will rise through the scale and isoon gain a greater influence both in his community and out side of it changes are need ied now in the state legislatures where one man controls the votes of very many members and in congress where men are too willing to give their vote on one issue to a man who will help them on another according to the statistics published by the dean's office there were fifty-five freshmen and 109 sophomores juniors and seniors placed on proba tion this last term this is an increase of fifty-eight over last june's probationers however it is interesting to know that the number of men who met the terms of probation this term is larger than that of last june of the original 600 freshmen only forty were flunked out of school thirty-six men in the three upper classes failed to meet the requirements and were therefore dropped from college this record on the whole re flects
