holding its own against the stronger teams to be met later in the season the final score was 42-13 most of mora vian's points were scored by foul goals moravian started the scoring by a foul goal during the first few minutes of play owing to the bril liant work of kennedy and wy socki on the defensive during the first half moravian was unable to score a goal from the floor in the meantime the morning a visit to the interborough rapid transit sta tion showed how current is gen erated and used in the subways the woolworth and singer build ings were inspected in the after noon the generating apparatus and working of the elevators being the chief part of the visit at this time the grand central terminal was also gone through on friday the party was in schenectady for the purpose of vis least the meeting was held in the geology lecture room in williams hall the wednesday evening before the holidays and was well attended at first slides showing the po sition of the three hills calculated to cause much trouble were shown on one side of the canal is located gold hill while opposite zion and contractors hills are placed down to the present time gold hill has been the source of greatest an noyance the material bulges up in the middle of the canal and then spreads to either side until passage is completely blocked views of this condition were shown within the nine-mile area through which most of the excavation has taken place in the construction of the canal the hills are many and are located without any order or definite arrangement though all of them are greatly modified by erosion along the route of the canal gold hill is the most promi nent gold hill is almost six hundred feet above sea level while its neigh bors contractors and zion are less the hill was formed by igeous rock being thrust up through the sedimentary the sedimentary strata consists of material of vol canic origin mixed with the mud and sand there placed during the tertiary period sediment laid down near the volcanoes are clay sandstone and lignitic materials between the sandstone formations arc layers of clay throughout the region the rocks are greatly faulted and as evidence of this dr miller showed a number of specimens of slickenslides taken from the region all through the canal zone there is much movement some of the faults extending across the canal water is by far the most serious menace it passes through the porous columnar structure till it reaches a clay section which is readily greased thus causing a slight movement there are several types of slides which are noticeable though the deformation type is most dangerous in the region of the culebra cut back from the canal at some distance will settle down a block which will squeeze materials into the canal bed making an ap pearance in the center this down ward movement is noticeable at a distance of one-quarter of a mile to either side then there are slides caused by the rainfall but these are surface movements carrying the material directly into the canal gold hill has been greatly re duced by slides on both sides until all the loose sedimentary material has slid away from the continued on fifth
