basketball team meets defeat lehigh loses first game of the season to the city college of new york eighteen to seventeen game hard fought throughout absence of captain crichton weakens team the first defeat of the season was handed to the brown and white basketball team by the city college of new york five at new york last saturday evening the game was a hard one to lose as le high clearly outplayed the c c n y team but the absence of capt crichton and the abundance of fouls called on the team proved too much of a handicap andi en abled c c n y to win out in the last few minutes of play by the score of 18 to 17 c c n y only was able to make four baskets from the floor but obtained ten points from fouls captain crichton was unable to make the trip owing to the death of his brother and it is useless to say that had he been in the line-up there would have been a different result as it was thomas whose regular position is forward played a good game at center and caged two of lehigh s seven baskets the first half ended with the score 12 to 10 in favor of lehigh the goal shooting of mccarthy was the feature of the half he having four baskets to his credit in the second half wysocki was forced to retire because of being troubled with a football injury and berg took his place mc carthy was ruled out of the game for personal fouls and barrett took his place a foul was called on c c n y just as the whistle blew but dynan failed to make the foul and thereby lost the opportunity of tying the score and perhaps coming out victorious in an extra period the line-up follows : lehigh meet the muhlenberg five tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock in taylor gym a good game is 1 expected and no doubt enthusiasm will be high with the allentown college as the opponent the team came out of the c c n y game in good physical condi tion and will be able to put up a good article of basketball the team will probably line up with dynan and mccarthy at forwards thomas at center and kennedy and wy socki as guards german plays read at deutscher verein meet club plans to present a short comedy playlet auf deutsch a meeting of the deutscher verein was held last friday even ing in drown hall for the purpose of reading several short german plays in an endeavor to find one suitable for presentation by the members of the verein the club hopes to be able to work up a short playlet and give it complete auf deutsch in the near future the club wants to give a short comedy full of action and one in which the majority of the verein members can take part the reading of the plays was done by the members entirely the various characters being taken by different members of the club the comedies read were from a collec tion of short playlets lustspiele fur gesellige kreise by roderich benedix they are all one act sketches written in very simple german as is usually the case with anything which is to be spoken and heard instead of simply read - the first lustspiel read was entitled der geheimnisvolle brief the action starts with graupe a clerk desiring in mar riage anna the daughter of han sen a poor gardner gertrude the mother of anna favors the mar riage for she thinks that graupe will be able to take care of the family but hansen and anna think otherwise the other man in the case is a poor lad by name fritz golder who has never had any chance to learn to read or write on account of his poverty anna's parents will not consent to his marrying their daughter especially since there are some rumors that he is in love with another girl who has disappeared very strangely then the mysterious letter ap pears which fritz is unable to read he takes it to anna and she likewise cannot read it her mother and father are in the same predicament the latter on account of having mislaid his glasses then graupe reads it for them but sub stitutes something that is not conttnten on fifth page tennis-soccer the tennis team faces what should be a successful season with every spelter in u s pro duced in south bethlehem in 1860 on the evening of thursday january 11 the members of the business administration club list ened to an illustrated talk given by major c a de saulles on the manufacture of zinc the speaker was a man well up in years with a wide experience in his profession as an engineer he first studied at troy polytechnic institute and after graduation still further pursued hisi studies in paris from which place he re turned at the outbreak of the civil war in america to take a position in the engineering corps of the southern army here he acquitted himself with distinction and re ceived the title of major the address although savoring strongly of the technical element contained much that was of interest to the layman the early history of zinc was reviewed and its manu facture described in detail the new jersey ziriu company which originated in south bethlehem formed the basis of the talk the speaker's twenty-five years of con nection with the company lent special importance to his wordis a belgian monk experimenting with zinc ore from the region about liege which figured so prominent ly in the opening of the present european struggle was the first to reduce the metal from its ore this occurred near the beginning of the last century the first zinc spelter in the united states was produced in south bethlehem in 1860 by the company which proved to be the forerunner of the present new jer sey zinc company the same com pany also was the first to produce zinc oxide from the ore the original plant was located on the present site of the bethlehem steel company billet mill at the southern or south bethlehem foot of the new street bridge its his tory is a peculiar one but for cer tain later difficulties south beth lehem might todlay claim the dis tinction of having the first and one of the largest zinc companies in the country as business expanded more ground was needed the first plant covered only nine acres ma jor die saulles who was then presi dent of the company had surveys of additional ground made and the plans for a new plant drawn up in all 40 000 was spent for draw ings then the lehigh valley coal company which supplied the plant with coal decided that the zinc company would have to pay the price set by it or do without the coal in view of the exorbitant prices the new zinc plant was doomed so far as south bethlehem was concerned all plans were abandoned and a new plant started at franklin sussex county new jersey the metallurgy in zinc is a pe culiar one and differs greatly from that of the other metals such as iron and copper lead iron and cadmium are the principal impuri ties in zinc ore the new jersey zinc company has available large deposits of franklinite all blends are first crushed to that ever lived christ occupies a position of honor in the world he occupies this posntion because he sought to make the plan of god known to man in his life and works • what was jesus christ's object in coming into the world he came that all nations might be blessed that he proved a bless ing is shown by the condition of the world since his advent as compared to conditions before he came into the world as so wonderfully told in ben hur ' christ said that we are to do better work than he did and in reply to those who ask why god does not do better he replied that god is doing the best he can with conditions as they aie what was this blessing to be christ was to show a better way of living through his works and life he also came to spread safety and that he has done so is proven by the fact that wherever christianity is known and believed in the rights of men are observed in short christianity is more than the golden rule it is a step higher what has the world against jesus christ in the first place he claimed to be a messiah but although he claimed to be a mes siah he was very fair for he said : ' if i do not the works of my fa ther believe me not but if i do believe me for my own sake man also believes that christ takes away his liberty this must be so any way for without a controlling power to guide him man would soon succumb to temptation and would become degenerated country of low moral last friday in packer me morial chapel the reverend s m jordan superintendent of the american high school at teheran persia gave a lecture on the needs of persia mr jordan who twenty-two years ago was cap tain and center of the lafayette football team and who later was a princeton football man hehasbeen in persia for the last eighteen years and is now visiting america for the purpose of raising an en dowment of a million dollars for bis school in speaking he de scribed persia explaining its needs its religion and its customs and then the work of the american school there he said that persia is the old home country of our ancestors the aryans and it has always had its independence it is a country to which the west owes not merely persian rugs omar khayam and other literature and the founder of algebra but also the progress of the kingdom of god persia is as large as 1 the united states with the exception of the states bordering on the gulf of mexico its religion is mohammed anism the religion that is the worst foe of christianity moham medanism makes vast claims for it self in flowery language and thus one can readily see how easily it has withstood the onward march of the cross the average persian's morals are corrupt and their ideals are low as an instance he cited the case of a father who brought his boy to the american school to get him away
