board the 1918 epitome is appropri ately dedicated to archibald johns ton class of 89 andi now vice president of the bethlehem steel co in the following words to archibald johnston 89 we dedicate this epitome as the unani mous tribute of the student-body of lehigh university to one of her most distinguished alumni who in his student days was a leader in scholarship and in college activi ties and who in his business life has won a commanding position as a captain of industry to him as an alumnus of whom all lehigh men are proud we tender this expression of loving esteem perhaps no better brief review of his life has been written than that which recently appeared in whet ford's log book it read as follows : a typical energetic all-around american a pennsylvanian by birth a bethlehem citizen by resi dence a lehigh graduate by edu cation ; a man of whom the lehigh valley and his home town are proud progressive alert giving his great abilities not only to the service of our country but to the development and betterment of the bethlehems leading in the noted movements now pending for the making of a great united bethle hem a community famed for its prominence in manufacture in education in music and the arts son of an honored engineer and master in mechanics archi bald johnston in his career and rise in the bethlehem steel company from mechanic to successive official positions of high responsibility and leadership has honored by his career his parentage and training and today esteemed at home and with an international reputation for business ability and engineer ing skill he is valued and looked up to in the bethlehems as a lead ing citizen and well loved friend mr johnston was born in phoe nixville pa was graduated from lehigh in 1889 with the degree of mechanical engineer and entered the employ of the bethlehem iron co immediately after graduation he has worked his way through most of the departments to his present position of first vice president of the bethlehem steel co besides his interest in the steel and iron industry he is connected with many other associations he is a director of the first national bank of bethlehem trustee of the homeopathic state hospital of allentown trustee of the mora vian college and theological semi nary member of the american so ciety of mechanical engineers and of the american institute of min ing engineers mr johnston is also recognized as one of the lead ing spirits in the big consolidation movement recently started in the bethlehems and is chairman of the bridge committee appointed by the state public tuted and was regarded as a dis i tinct success thus the men and women who have been instructing foreigners and others during this college year will meet to discuss the problems arising in this work judge patterson to address y.m.c.a hon john h patterson judge of the court of common pleas of philadelphia will-address the y m c a sunday evening aside from his duties on the bench judge pat terson is president of the dickens fellowship he is a forceful and interesting speaker miss helen graham a soprano soloist of bethlehem will sing at the meeting mid-week groups hold interest dormito.y and fraternity dis cussion meetings take up different topics order broken all groups do not handle same subject on stated nights but follow leaders the third discussion group meet ings of the second period of the 1916-17 schedule were held on wednesday evening january 17 in the various fraternity houses and dormitory sections the subject the gospel of the second chance was one which could be made to apply very closely to every ordinary student's life that is in the light of in fluencing all the students to keep straight and not to hazard all for a passing pleasure or period of dis sipation when experience has shown that although every fallen man has a second chance nevertheless very few come back through the inability of mr m 0 fuller and prof w l wilson to lead the groups at the kappa sigma house and at section e taylor hall respectively messrs 0 clapp and j m frey replaced them as leaders in the discussion at these group meetings the discussion held at one frater nity house was led by a prominent business man of south bethlehem who conducted an unusually inter esting meeting upon the gospel of a new life the speaker proved to be one of great merit and during the discussion with the members some very interesting points were brought out the subject centered about the life of samuel hadley member of a prominent ohio family whose career w t asi in such direct opposition to that of one of the same name william hadley discussed several weeks ago that a brief review of that meeting was held william hadley a pennsyl vanian by birth a college graduate and above all a real man possessed a personality which many would do well to study graduated from harvard in 1905 where he was a prominent athlete and student he found that his life's work lay in the missionary field where he is today dealing with countless numbers of the ignorant doing good and work ing it seems with unlimited and unrelenting power for god in direct contrast to william hadley is the career of samuel hadley early in life hadley left his ohio home to gain fortune in new york possessed of a wonder ful personality energetic intelli gent he had before him a life of limitless opportunities and of prominence but as with every man he came to the parting of the ways and took the wrong path in less time than could be thought pos sible that man was down and out he took to drinking gambling and idleness was forsaken by his friends and became hopelessly de graded wandering the streets for days he drifted into the jerry ma cauley mission water street new york when the end it seemed 1 to his wretchedl being seemed near and pleadedl with that eminent mis : sionary for help macauley pulled that man from the depths of vice revived him physically and re 1 newed the spirit of god in the man ; and today samuel hadley is the ex continued on fifth page mustard and cheese selects production the fair co=ed by george ade chosen for annual performance the mustard and cheese club has begun work in earnest on this year's production the play will be the fair co-ed " by george ade one of that author's very best musical comedies the fair co ed was written by mr ade for - the dramatic club at perdue uni versity of which he is an alumnus the play was a great success and was witnessed by miss elsie janis who was very much pleased with it she had it touched up and slightly i remodeled and appeared as star in it for several seasons with great success after that success the play did not appear again never having been released to stock or traveling companies it is now about to be produced in film the first try-outs were held in drown hall thursday evening and a large turn-out of candidates were present any men who desire to try out for the cast or chorus or for assistant manager must report for the try-out meetings next week health department condemns water dr drinker in a notice posted on the campus bulletin boards and in the various buildings souuued ... warning against a too liberal use of the water supplied by the bethle hem city water company though it is understood that by february first there will be sufficient filters installed to handle the supply the university has caused to have placed in buildings where there are drinking fountains at present ross common water this situation has been brought about by the larger demand for drinking water in the bethlehems caused directly by the increase in population and in creased consumption in the leading industrial plant the letter sent by dr s g dixon of the state department of health to the secretary of the south bethlehem board of health reads : this department finds that the bethlehem city water company has been unable to complete the ad ditional filters now under construc tion and as a result is by-passing a portion of the water delivered to the public in view of these cir cumstances this department has found it necessary to notify the company to warn the public to boil all water taken from the mains and used for domestic purposes until such time as the additional filters i can be completed so that all water delivered to the system will be properly purified your co-opera tion in this matter is desired ' ' notice there will be a photograph of the st paul's society taken at mccaa's studio on saturday at 1:30 o'clock brown wrestlers appear on schedule several changes have been made by manager kehrer in the wrest ling schedule brown has been scheduled in place of harvard the meet to take place on washington s birthday in the taylor gymna sium the army meet is pending â– as yet ; it is not certain whether ar rangements for it can be completed muhlenberg easy for varsity visitors completely outclassed by fast floor work of lehigh five wysocki and dynan star muhlenberg closely guarded throughout obtained only four field goals muhlenberg was completely out classed by the brown and white team last wednesday evening in a rather slow game which finally ended 50 to 19 the largest crowd of the season witnessed the contest the gymnasium being practically filled the muhlenberg team was so closely guarded throughout the game that only four field goals were scored by them during the entire contest while the lehigh quintet caged a total of twenty-four from field the all aroundi playing of wysocki and the goal shooting of dynan were easily the features of the game capt crichton did not appear in the line-up on account of the death of his brother and dynan was acting captain dynan started the game by caging a basket during the first fifteen seconds of play and seven baskets were scored before a single point was annexed by the visitors jln this half mccarthy led in scoring with four goals while dynan and wysocki each had three dudack scored the visitors only field goal in the half muhlenberg took a slight brace the first part of the second half and scored two field goals but after a few minutes of play the brown and white team continued to mo nopolize the goal shooting and an nexed twelve goals before the half ended in the last five minutes of play the entire substitute team was put in the game the feature of the second half was the goal shoot ing of dynan and wysocki
