the brown and white vol xxiv lehigh university bethlehem pa friday february 16 1917 carnegie tech gives good battle brown and white five again shows brilliant team work score 37=32 team victorious over loyola on jan 31 and swarthmore on feb 10 in one of the fastest and hardest fought games seen here this season lehigh defeated the speedy car negie tech five last wednesday night before a large crowd in tay lor gymnasium by the score of 37 to 32 the game was spectacular throughout the two teams being very evenly matched but the su perb playing of dynan proved enough to give lehigh the game he scored a total of twenty-one points sixteen of which were by goals from the floor the accurate foul shooting of abrams kept the visitors in the running at all times and he succeeded in caging four teen fouls out of sixteen attempts dynan started off the scoring in the first half by a pretty goal on a long shot dynan crichton and kennedy were the only men to score for lehigh in the first half dynan caging three goals and three fouls while the other two scored two goals apiece all but four of the visitors points were on fouls in this half the half ended with the score standing 17 to 13 in lehigh s favor in the second half lehigh con tinued to lead by a small margin by close guarding of wysocki and kennedy and the brilliant shooting of dynan in the last five minutes of play berg was substituted for kennedy and barrett for mccar thy as has been the case throughout the season the superior team work and defensive work of the brown and white team proved to be the winning factor for lehigh dy nan was easily the star and for the visitors abrams was the most con sistent point getter a still harder . battle is anticipated when lehigh meets carnegie tech on the lat ter's floor next week the line-up follows : lehigh pos carnegie t dynan f abrams w mccarthy . f green crichton c.)...c corey wysocki g finlay kennedy g levy substitutions berg for kenne dy barrett for mccarthy gressler for corey goals : dynan 8 crichton 3 1 kennedy 2 mccarthy 2 wysocki gren 4 abrams 3 corey finlay fouls dynan 5 abrams 14 ref eree tom thorpe columbia swarthmore game in one of the hardest fought games this season lehigh defeated swarthmore at swarthmore on february 10 by a score of 29 to 28 it took an extra period of five min utes to decide the contest and with the score 28 to 27 in favor of swarthmore and ten seconds to play wysocki broke loose from his man and scored the winning goal wiiich gave the brow t n and white team its fourth straight victory the lead alternated throughout the game neither team being ahead at any one time by anything like a safe margin swarthmore was the first to score on a foul in the first half mccar thy and crichton each secured two field goals while kennedy and wy continued on fifth page rehearsals progress for the fair co=ed cast selection nearly completed more candidates needed for chorus the work on the mustard and cheese production of the fair co-ed is progressing nicely under the direction of capable coaches for the chorus dancing as well as the acting rehearsals will be held regularly twice a week on monday and thursday evenings in drown hall cast and chorus will report together at these rehearsals until further notice the selections for the characters j has been made with the exception of a few parts which are still being competed the title role that of cynthia bright will be played by h j sloman 17 who has ap peared in a feminine role in the club's productions for the past three years j mckay 17 in the role of davy dickerson leading male character will play opposite him mckay is well known for his work in this line in the past three years and especially for his success in the role of the fascinating widow in last year's production of that name a bach 17 will play the part of wellington reed cynthia's guardian the other male parts have been assigned as follows jo sephus cadwallader kr o m or boyd ; earnest grubb sugar ; fred carrington colby bob chester r c good captain peacock lam bert ; squab dingle kittle ; grouch hubbard marshall ; sergeant par dfee ; jimmy bright ayrault the female parts although not definitely decided will probably go to the following men r a cohn wm cohen brooks rudy ba shoar terry eggie allan and cameron on monday night about thirty men reported as candidates for the chorus and were drilled in some simple steps the turnout was fair ly promising but more men are needed to compete for positions as the chorus will be large and active in this play prize competition the subject of the essay for the price prize for english compo sition for this year is ' ' the liter ary works of richard harding davis some reference to his literary activities while in college such as his connection with the burr is also required the price prize of 25 is awarded to the freshman who shall write the best essay on the above subject competitors must signify their intentions of writing by april 1 the essay is due on may 31 dr henry r price president of the board of trustees of the university is donor of the prize dr price is very much interested in the subject which is given this year track men place in the indoor track meet held in the colosseum last friday evening which lafayette won lehigh track men captured two first places two seconds and two thirds w j schuessler won the standing high and standing broad jumps also taking second place in the running high jump j r samson was second in the 1000-yard run w h carr third in the one-mile open and b r greenleaf third in the 440-yardi dash famous wrestler booked to speak michael m dorizas four=year champion will talk on greece groups discuss recent meetings were first in last period of the year's schedule michail m dorizas u of p 16 the famous greek intercollegiate j | heavyweight champion wrestler j and y m c a worker will ad dress the y m c a meeting in drown hall on sunday evening february 18 mike dorizas as he is known almost universally will give an il lustrated talk on greece his na tive country he himself has taken all the pictures shown and will give his usual interesting talk on the life and customs of the gre cians his slides have cost him in the neighborhood of one hundred dollars and are said to be the best series of pictures of greece ever shown in this country mr dorizas is at present teaching in the ger mantown academy mike took just twenty-nine minutes to throw all the men he ever met in intercollegiate wrest ling bouts in his four years of wrestling at pennsylvania and has gained fame through this and his other achievements and feats of strength his ability as ay m c a leader and speaker is no less marked and his talk on sunday evening should be most interesting the first of the four meetings in the third and last period of the dis cussion group schedule was held in the various fraternity houses and dormitory sections on wednesday evening this meeting was the first in the second term of the college year and considerable effort was made to make it the occasion of a rally and flying start for the final period the life of mary lyon was cited as an example of a woman who be lieved and worked hard in her training for social efficiency the application of this woman's principles mode of living and leading characteristics to the life of a college man yielded fruitful discussion mary lyon was a country girl of massachusetts she struggled hard for what education she secured and when later as a brilliant scholar she attained to high positions and won fame she turned her whole energy to the | founding of a school where girls might be educated in any line of | work alike in physical mental and \ spiritual things mt holyoke seminary was the outcome of mary lyon's scheme when this college was founded in i the early half of the nineteenth century girls colleges were looked upon as impossible and impracti cal and even as foolish the topics of character success what constitutes a successful man sunday study and many others | arising from the discussion in hand | brought forth many interesting and valuable thoughts dr dpinker rests immediately following his ad dress at the inauguration of pro fessor riddick 90 as president of north carolina college of agri culture and arts dr drinker will retire to camden north carolina for a period of recuperation ex tending over several weeks alumnus elected to presidency w c riddick 90 to be at head of north carolina college of agriculture and arts wallace carl riddick c.e 90 will be inaugurated as president of the north carolina college of agriculture and mechanic arts at west raleigh n c on washing ton's birthday president drinker will represent lehigh university and will deliver an address mr riddick was born in wake county n c in 1864 he was graduated from the university of north carolina in 1885 ; taught at j westfield n c for two years en tered lehigh university in 1887 and w t as graduated with the degree of civil engineer in 1890 after working for two years on construc tion at weldon n c he was elected a member of the faculty of the north carolina college of agri culture and mechanic arts where he taught mathematics and all branches of engineering later his work was restricted to the de partment of civil engineering in 1909 he was elected vice-president of the college and in may 1916 was elected president the june 2 1916 issue of the raleigh n c news and observer contained the following characterization of presi dent riddick by senator gardner a member of the board of trustees of the north carolina college of agriculture and mechanic arts : professor rididick will give to the state and to the a and m col lege a magnificent administration he is an able executive intensely interested in every phase of college work knows what the college has done in the past and what it ought to do in the future is a man of broad vision thoroughly familiar with the traditions and ambitions of the institution intimately ac quainted with the character of the young men who compose the stu dent body and above and beyond this is a practical man without frills and is blessed with conspicu ous common sense prof mckibben lectures prof f p mckibben has invited the members of the chamber of commerce of south bethlehem and friends to be his guests at fritz laboratory february 19 when he will deliver an illustrated address his valuable collection of bridge photographs will be shown and there will be interesting tests ;
