team breaks even on western trip close contest carnegie tech only won after extra periods had been played w.-j easy the varsity basketball team suc ceeded in breaking even on the trip last week in the western part of the state an exceedingly good record considering the hard trip and playing on strange floors the only team administering a very de cisive defeat to the brown and white five was the university of pittsburgh the pittsburghers win ning by a score of 34 to 19 the carnegie tech five which was de feated here several weeks ago had to go two extra periods of five min utes each to win the game and then only by a margin of one point as was expected lehigh captured the contests with juniata and wash ington and jefferson although the former team proved a stronger op ponent than was expected and the result of the contest was not de cided in lehigh s favor until the last few minutes of play when mc carthy put the game in the won column by two spectacular baskets the washington and jefferson team proved to be no match for the brown and white five and lost by a score of 38 to 22 juniata started off strong by scoring seven points before lehigh got its bearings but by the end of the first half the score stood 16 to 13 in favor of lehigh dynan and crichton scored two goals apiece in this half and mccarthy one the scoring for lehigh was done by dynan mccarthy and crichton while wright of juniata was its most consistent point getter the line-up and score follows : lehigh 27 pos juniata 21 dynan f fowler mccarthy f oiler crichton c.)...c baker wysocki . g wright kennedy g . . c homer substitutions : berg for wy socki goals : dynan 3 mccarthy 3 crichton 3 baker 3 wright 3 fouls dynan 9 oiler 9 referee brenner f & m pittsburgh proved to be a stronger opponent than was antici pated and seemed to have little dif ficulty in giving the brown and white team its worst beating of the season the lehigh forward were practically powerless to penetrate the strong defense and although exhibiting some splendid passing and team work their efforts were practically futile the first half ended with the score 17 to 10 in fa vor of pitt lubic the pitt star threw nine fouls out of nine at tempts during this half in the second half hastings did all of pitt's scoring from the field by caging five baskets while dynan scored two and mccarthy one the line-up follows lehigh pos chemical society held a regular monthly meeting in saucon hall last friday evening a good turn-out of members heard two papers read by f d powers 17 and 0 r rice 17 both of excep tional merit and interest conservation in the united states was the subject of powers talk conservation he began is a term much used and also much abused essentially con servation means preservation from loss decay or injury ; but in rela tion to natural resources it means simply a wise use with a minimum waste this earth fortunately was endowed with a superabundance of natural resources and america was certainly given the lion's share the inhabitants of this world are beginning to wake up to the fact that the horn of plenty is a myth and that our resources are being consumed faster than they are be ing accumulated our forests are already half gone and we are taking from them annually ap proximately three times what they produce our supplies of coal iron gas oil fertilizers and other material resources are being con sumed at a rate which apparently indicates a definite end in sight our waters instead of being utilized and replacing the fast dis appearing coal supply are allowed to go to waste and cause destruc tion where they should be of ser vice our soil instead of being conserved is wasted by erosion and unwise cultivation if there were no waste we might be justified in going on without pause but the fact is that much of the consump tion is thrown away thus robbing posterity of resources to which they have as much right as our selves continued on fifth page mandolin club there will be a rehearsal of the mandolin club this afternoon at 4:00 o'clock in drown hall it is requested that every man be pres ent at this rehearsal york county club the york county club will hold a short but important meeting on friday evening march 2 at 7 30 o'clock in drown hall every york county man is urged to be present at this meeting tom keady denies he will coach dartmouth in order to set at rest the rumors afloat that j thomas keady foot ball and baseball coach at lehigh is a candidate to succeed john cavanaugh official announcement was made that there is absolutely no truth in the statement professor h r reiter last sat urday received a letter from keady to this effect : i am sick and tired of denying that i am going to han over to coach dartmouth i wish you wouldi state that i am not a candidate for the coaching position and that i never have been ' ' keady still has two years of a three-year contract as football coach at lehigh including an in creased salary over his first con tract with the athletic association of the university honor system is given support over three hundred students sign second pledge not to cheat and to report every man who does arcadia leads with pledge takes solemn oath for a more vigorous administration would make a new start one of the most important col lege meetings of recent years w r as held last friday morning in packer hall to place the honor system on a working basis such that it will be a vital force and not a mere for mality w a richards president of the arcadia was first called upon and said as follows : the honor system as it now exists is a rank failure men in college will not report a man if he sees him cheating men have open ly given aid in final examinations quizes and recitations the ar cadia has realized this and is going to abolish this system to the man we are going to set the example and with the aid of the men who have the moral courage to report cheating the honor system will be given its proper place at lehigh the honor system is one of le h'igh s dearest traditions and it must be lived up to jby every man in college ' ' he then read the following oath to which each member of the ar cadia publicly swore his support : i solemnly promise on my word of honor as a gentleman that i will uphold the honor system not only by abstaining from all cheating my self but also by reporting every case of cheating that i see regard less of ties of any kind j mckay the arcadia men who have any moral convictions whatever and i myself will report any cheating regardless of whom the person may be l a dawson what you men need is back-bone anyone can sit back and allow this wholesale rob bery to go on but it takes a man with a little stuff to do the right thing the arcadia is going to attempt to put some back-bone in the student body in order that it will come out and support the hon or system to the man back the honor system and show that you have some idea of what is right w whigham jr it's entire ly up to the student body to back the arcadia to the limit in support ing the honor system r w wolcott this reporting of men by members of the arcadia is going to stir up some very hard feelings and cause its members to be the point of many insulting re marks w t e are willing to bear all this if we can bring the honor sys tem where it rightly belongs men who cheat are nothing more than scholastic burglars do you consider your name worth anything a man who will cheat through an examination and then sign i have neither given nor received aid is just as much of a crook as a thug who robs a home get into this honor system bring it where it belongs in the life of every lehigh student a bach the arcadia comes out before you men and admits its guilt in the past this cheating is universal freshmen sophomores juniors and seniors are doing it but we are going to try to eliminate this corrupt practice we all know of men here in col lege who are going through by continued on fifth page the individual versus the mass subject of address given by prof b l miller at y m c a meeting professor b l miller of the de partment of geology gave an in teresting address at the regular y m c a meeting last sunday evening the substance of his ad dress the subject of which was the individual vs the mass follows : from the study of past life we find that the development of the individual summarizes the develop ment of the w 7 hole race progress comes about by the individual there has never been a nation which could attribute its progress to the advancement of its every member but every step forward was due to a few leaders the world has needed these few indi viduals more than the masses plato shakespeare darwin and others are of inestimable import ance in the world's history ' ' individualism governsthelower forms of animal life there is a keen struggle for self and the in terests of the individual are of a selfish sort in the case of man on the other hand individualism is apt to be lost when man has passed the stage where he seeks happiness for himself he begins to look beyond and to see what can be done for the happiness of the race and of future generations we are however too much in clined to go with the majority when it comes to thinking each should think independently the voice of the people is not the voice of god but the voice of god is more frequently with the majority many men who have been the greatest leaders and have done the greatest work for humanity have been for a time with the minority but have had the courage of tlreir convictions the thing that re quires the greatest courage today is individualism — daring to stand out by oneself new naturalization class a new class in naturalization is being started by the y m c a to morrow evening on thursday night some men from the class will go to easton where arrangements have been made to take out the first and second papers in naturaliza tion this class is started to prepare the men for a special term of court in northampton county which will be held in may and the regular june term of court in lehigh county freshman class holds meeting a meeting of the freshman class was held directly after the college meeting last friday morning e p beach was elected treasurer of the class to fill the vacancy left by p d good who is no longer in col lege blue and old gold were se lected as the class colors the com mittee which had been appointed to draw up a constitution then made a report copies of the pro posed constitution will be posted on the various bulletin boards of the college and the constitution will be voted on at the next meeting the president made the state ment that about half of the mem bers of the class had not as yet paid their dues he urged the delin quents to see e p beach as soon as possible penn matmen meet defeat lehigh has little trouble in de feating the quaker city grapplers score 18-6 brown and white secures four decisions one bout ends in draw last saturday afternoon in weightman hall philadelphia the lehigh wrestling team easily de feated the university of pennsyl vania grapplers by the score of 18 to 6 the brown and white wrest lers won every bout but one and captain milligan of perm was the winner in this event although wrestling for fifteen minutes the 115-pound class event ended in a draw neither kirk of lehigh nor servais of pennsyl vania being able to secure a fall or decision each man in this bout was awarded two points the big surprise of the afternoon was in the 125-pound class when wooley who was counted a sure point winner for perm was easily defeated by jenness of lehigh wooley was on the floor during eight of the nine minutes putting up his usual hard fight kepa obtained the decision over cassil in the 135-pound class mc cullough,wrestling twenty pounds out of his weight put up a big fight in the 145-pound bout after two extra periods of three minutes each he was awarded the decision over malakis of perm in a hard struggle lasting fifteen minutes parrish obtained the de cision over.statler in the 158-pound class in the 175-pound class cap tain milligan secured the decision over dayton this was the only de cision obtained by the quaker mat men the heavyweight class bout was thrown out as pons refused the de cision after keppler was injured this is the second consecutive de feat handed to the pennsylvania wrestlers by the lehigh team the first being in 1915 by the one-sided score of 21 to 2 the summary of the meet is as follows : 115-pound class : draw between kirk of lehigh and servais of pennsylvania time : one period 9 minutes two extra periods 3 minutes each 125-pound class : jenness of lehigh won on decision over wooley of pennsylvania time : 9
