musical clubs consisting of the mandolin symphony club directed by mr leonard luckenbach the glee club led by mr t edgar shields and the vanities or chestra directed by david flu harty gave their first concert of the season on friday eve ning at bishopthorpe manor before a highly enthusiastic audience the splendid manner in which the glee club sang re flected the excellent work done by mr shields with the club mr shields was unfortunately detained at the beginning of the evening but under the able leadership of president de gray ole king cole was sung with all its hi deddle dees continued on page three the mandolin symphony or chestra presented a compara tively new organization in col legiate circles which is far lehigh university calender the scabbard and blade so ciety very successfully enter tained the student body of le high at an open meeting held at the armory last thursday eve ning captain rodman the main speaker of the evening talked about his experiences and nar row escapes on the battle fields of france in the course of his speech he displayed many souvenirs and relics of the great war and recalled some of the old buddy stories that were told behind the lines colonel j gordon ridsdale student leader of lehigh's mil itary organization gave an il lustrated talk on the evolution of the machine gun the stac cato roar of the rapid firing gun completely surprised his audience his occasional sentry jokes proved an attractive fea ture in his speech captain j a chacey in his introductory speech explained the objects and the benefits of the scabbard and blade so ciety and its organization and methods of securing members fred trafford secretary of the student y m c a was called upon to make a speech his talk disclosed the fact that he was entirely in favor of hav ing a reserved officers train ing corps and he urged the underclassmen to do their share in supporting the scabbard and blade society continued on page four the university band made its first public appearance since the lafayette game with all the snap and pep that always announcement was made thursday of the appointment of austin tate for five years mentor of the bethlehem high school gridiron team as coach of freshman football at le high for the coming fall coach tate who was a member of the class of 1917 played left tackle on the varsity eleven four years captaining the team in his senior year it was dur ing this period that lehigh de feated lafayette in three out of four contests coach tate also played goaltender on two lehigh championship lacrosse teams while at bethlehem high tate consistently built up win ning combinations taking foar out of five games from allen town high and being the only team in this section to defeat norristown high and easton high in the last four years he also coached bethlehem's 1925 championship baseball team during the past few years coach tate has attended the illinois coaching school under the supervision of robert zup pke and gilmour dobie and the harvard coaching school he is well equipped to turn out one of the best frosh teams that lehigh has ever had and given reasonable material he will do it in this connection everyone is urged to do every thing possible to interest sub freshmen in lehigh and to turn in the names of all pros pects to coach tate lehigh students have been complain ing of the lack of football ma terial and this is their chance to better conditions dr mennes speaks before blake soc football theory course arranged the brown and white nata tors started off a gala sport day for lehigh by gaining a decisive victory over catholic university by the large score of 46-13 in a dual meet held at taylor pool on saturday the times of the events were rather slow owing to the choppy con ditions of the pool showing great superiority throughout the meet the le high swimmers captured all but one first place the major ity of events narrowed down to a keen competition for first honors between the lehigh en trants in the fancy diving jack hayes barely nosed out ted blood by a margin of nine tenths of a point a similar close event took place in the 200-yard breaststroke when tom coxe and charlie leader swam the entire distance neck and neck coxe clinching the decision by the merest fraction of a second the 100-yard dash was also marked by a close finish captain raleigh forging ahead at the finish with bob hertzler close at his heels from the spectators point of view the 440-yard free-style was the prettiest race to watch as fritchie of catholic uni versity swam with exceptional ly fine form appearing to cov er the gruelling distance with ease although he was hard pressed by charlie webbe le high's usual standby in this event summary : 200-yard relay won by le high hertzler ellis ball team defeated their lafay ette rivals with little difficulty in the game played last satur day night in taylor gym the brown and white quintet roll ed up a total of 45 points to the maroon's 23 by the defeat of their arch rivals the basket eers kept their home court rec ord intact and scored the fifth consecutive victory of lehigh teams over lafayette the game the first of a series of three to be played with the leopards was fast and exciting through out after the first few min utes of play lehigh was never seriously threatened and led all the way to the final whistle billmeyer and c schaub star red for the brown and white while adams was the outstand ing player for the visitors billmeyer started the scoring for the brown and white with a field goal after clever pass work brought the ball within range of the basket bush the lafayette captain started his team off with a brilliant shot from near center but from then on the brown and white court men drew away from the visi tors despite the desperate ef forts of the maroon to check them each side continued to cage the ball alternately for the rest of the period the half ended with lehigh on the heavy side of a 19-12 score in give the old grads a chance to meet informally at the college with no definite program arranged for them but to see their al ma mater on a typical working day and to renew old memories and acquaintances the alum ni registered at the alumni of fice when they arrived this morning and from that time on they did as they pleased at a quarter after twelve most of the old grads assem bled in coppee hall where dr richards extended a welcome to all the alumni and gave an illustrated lecture on the fu ture james ward packard lab oratory everybody went to the cafeteria for luncheon fol lowing the lecture after which an open get-together meeting was held in drown hall pro fessors larkin carothers and palmer representing the en gineering business and arts schools respectively addressed the meeting for a short while outlining the plans of their va rious departments this was the only scheduled feature for the day and the old grads were free to roam around the school for the rest of the day a basketball game between lehigh and franklin and mar shall is scheduled for this after noon in order to give the alum in a chance to see the cagemen go into action after their vic torious game fourth straight victory of the season saturday evening by defeating the lafayette frosh 32-31 in an exciting game the contest was staged in the taylor gym preliminary to the varsity en gagement continued on page three the game was characterized by close guarding which kept the score down so that the lead was narrow at all times la fayette was ahead at half-time and during most of the encoun the history and de velopment of the present sta tus of psychology dr meenes was well quali fied to speak on the subject having studied psychology un der some of the foremost am erican and european psycholo gists previous to his coming to lehigh university continued on page four the subject of the doctor's address was exceedingly inter esting to the members of the society he began his address by saying that the study of psychology began with aristo tle at the time when men spec ulated upon the nature of the mind and soul while this led to the study of the mind it was the club de quinze chose the butztown inn as the scene of their banquet last thursday evening as is the custom at their meetings nothing but french was spoken during the evening professor toohy gave the address on the topic french customs the talk in which he brought out the likenesses and contrasts in the conventions of the french and americans was very instruc tive as well as most entertain ing following professor toohy's talk there was some lively dis cussion of various topics of cur rent interest and french trans lations of some of the popular songs were sung these songs proved to be one of the most popular features of the evening continued on page four the frosh mermen made a very creditable showing against the strong mercersburg team losing by the score of 39-23 in a dual meet held at mercers burg on saturday the score is hardly a criterion as the meet would probably have re sulted in a tie if it had not been for an unfortunate circum stance which arose during the very closely contended relay race saying that the study of psychology began with aristo tle at the time when men spec ulated upon the nature of the mind and soul while this led to the study of the mind it was the club de quinze chose the butztown inn as the scene of their banquet last thursday evening as is the custom at their meetings nothing but french was spoken during the evening professor toohy gave the address on the topic french customs the talk in which he brought out the likenesses and contrasts in the conventions of the french and americans was very instruc tive as well as most entertain ing following professor toohy's talk there was some lively dis cussion of various topics of cur rent interest and french trans lations of some of the popular songs were sung these songs proved to be one of the most popular features of the evening continued on page four the frosh mermen made a very creditable showing against the strong mercersburg team losing by the score of 39-23 in a dual meet held at mercers burg on saturday the score is hardly a criterion as the meet would probably have re sulted in a tie if it had not been for an unfortunate circum stance which arose during the very closely contended relay race
