present misunder standings the third meeting of the third and final period of the discussion group schedule was held on wed nesdoy evening in the various fra ternity houses and dormitory sec tions mr j m frey took rev james robinson's place as leader of the group in section b taylor hall at the following groups members of the arcadia replaced the regular leaders and discussed the new phase of the honor system phi gamma delta delta upsilon sigma chi alpha tau omega phi delta theta and price hall the leader at one fraternity house centered the discussion around the topic obedience to a purpose ' ' it was brought out that every person should have a definite purpose and should concentrate upon this purpose the value re ceived from being obedient to this purpose would be the accomplish ment of some definite work and also the happiness derived from the work civil engineers hear talk on municipal bonds rehearsals on the fair co-ed are fast producing an admirable musical comedy the members of the cast are being drilled in the art of putting over the clever lines while the large chorus is being in structed in the intricacies of or iginal dance numbers the music for the show promises to be exceptionally meritorious one of the largest music houses in new york has been consulted and will supply several of the latest musical hits and arrange several original numbers with such an arrangement combined with the excellent and novel steps that are being introduced the chorus will greatly add to the at tractiveness of the production some changes have been made in the cast the vacancy left by the retirement of r a colin one of the club's best female impersona tors will be filled by wm cohen 19 the parts of fred carrington and wellington reed formerly held by colby and bach respec tively have been exchanged be tween these two men a change which seems to make quite an im provement the setting of the play is one which allows of considerable dis play in the way of scenery the first scene is laid in front of the main building on the campus of the fictitious college bingham one scene pictures class day and the awarding of diplomas it is a campus scene and during this part of the play the beautiful lantern song is introduced japanese lan terns are strung across the stage and flash in gay colors in unison with the catchy music both the scene and the music are very ef fective hazing george washington university proved no match for lehigh in basketball in taylor gymnasium last wednesday and were easily defeated by a score of 50 to 17 al most an entire substitute team played for the brown and white during the first half neither team scored the first seven minutes of play when at last wysocki started it off with a pretty goal wysocki and mccarthy were the only regulars used in the first half in this period wysocki scored every field goal with the ex ception of one which was tallied by powers george washington failed to score but one goal in thos period and the half ended with the score 11 to 5 in favor of lehigh a different team started the second half and had no difficulty drawing ahead of the visitors crichton and barrett each scored five field goals teams in college circles this year and has defeated practically every five they have met last saturday pitt was defeated by the blue and white five in a close game at state college the senior and sophomore civil engineers were treated tuesday morning to a lecture by mr edgar mcc ulman representing a phila delphia bonding house on the subject of municipal bonds during the first term the senior civil engineers designed a water supply system for the city of geneva n v and after com pleting the design an estimate was made of the cost of the system mr ulman took up the problem after the senior civil engineers had com pleted the estimate of the cost and described how a borough would finance the water supply system he impressed on his hearers the importance of having bond issues in proper legal form so as not to exceed the bonded indebtedness of the municipality fixed by state laws after the municipality has issued the bonds which are pur chased by investment banking houses they are sold to various banks trust companies and indi viduals as any other commodity is sold the lecturer attached consider able importance to the elections which are held by municipalities to authorize bond issues and to the importance from the investor's standpoint of knowing that all legal forms have been properly complied with in closing mr ulman showed samples of bonds with coupons at tached the magazine on the life and achievements of herman schnei der 94 now t dean of the school of engineering at the university of cincinnati a brief summary follows : ' ' fifteen years ago herman schneider civil engineer brought into the educational market a new idea the vision of engineering stu dents working with their hands for pay in the field and shop today schneider is dean of the school of engineering at the university of cincinnati and each year the would-be students he turns away through lack of room exceeds the number of graduates from any two of the institutions whose attention he was soliciting fifteen years ago schneider's school has shat tered certain educational tra ditions for one thing it guaran tees the success of its graduates again this school has linked up theory with practice its text book pages are translated in terms of the grease-grimed machine shops the laboratories the box cars the street excavations the railroad repair shops where its students spend two weeks of every four at the end of each fortnight one-half of schneider's students walk out of their classrooms and put on overalls and jumpers then they get on the job their alter nates relieved from shop duty swarm back to the vacant class rooms both shifts of students in their outside work are drawing similar pay performing similar duties subject to similar discipline as other employees in the same shops but the work which means most of all to herman schneider goes even farther than this with his university as a human labora tory he is showing america how to eliminate human misfits how to prevent modern industry from making failures of men who have every right to be successful dean schneider says every normal person has a right to suc cess you must know at least twenty persons whom you would class as failures — defeated men struggling along in a hopeless hang-dog fashion often haunted by the fear that they will lose the very jobs that give so little and take so much but these men are not failures ' fifty chances to one they are merely misfits they have not found their places they are the victims of blind education slip shod employment and their own inability to analyze themselves " here at the university if an earnest student with average brains is not a success we feel it is largely our fault we have not by a long shot mastered the science of eliminating misfits sometimes it takes us many months many shifts of occupation to determine just what work a youth is best fitted to do but when a co-operative stu dent remains with us two years we continued on fourth freshmen rules will be required to show the green while on the campus from 8 a.m march 1 to 8 a.m march 8 upper classmen should report all violations of the rules to this committee every case which has come before it this year has been handled with speed and precision the hazing committee has sent letters to all colleges whose men have entered lehigh in the past requesting copies of their fresh men rules this has been done in order to definitely ascertain the status of . these men and to place them in the proper class without the usual delay relay team to meet lafayette in dual race lehigh's relay team will meet the lafayette quartet tonight at the george washington meet in a one-mile dual race the games are to be held in convention hall washington d c this is the first appearance of the lafayette run ners this season and they are re puted to be in first class form the brown and white track men have been working faithfully during the last two weeks and the contest should be very close schultz will in all probability run the first leg of the race .; greenleaf , the second ; morrissey the third and captain mcgrath will run anchor man there will be members of the arcadia in the alumni room on wednesday from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m to answer any questions which may be asked by students the following statement of how cases are handled is the second of a series of articles by the arcadia which has been prepared following the recent college meeting at which the honor system was discussed the first step in a case comes from a student or member of the faculty when a man has been re ported to the arcadia for an in fraction of the honor system this report can be made either orally or in writing to any member of the arcadia this 1 member will then notify the president or secretary who in turn will call a meeting of the law and order committee which leads up to the second step the student charged with this infraction is then summoned be fore the law and order com mittee which meets in the alumni room at drown hall where all meetings of the arcadia are held a formal statement of the charge is then made foil wing the state ment of the charge the student is asked the simple question are you guilty or not guilty if the answer is guilty the case is at once turned over to the joint com mittee of the arcadia and faculty and at the same time a formal notice is sent to the secretary of the faculty notifying him of the findings of the committee if the answer is not guilty the case is taken before the arcadia a meeting is called as soon as possible the arcadia thereupon assumes the functions of a court a prosecuting attorney is ap pointed by the president with the secretary as assistant the stu dent charged has the privilege of selecting any other student in col lege to defend him or he may act in his own defense the presentation of evidence then follows the prosecuting at torney speaks first outlining the evidence that has been collected this includes in some cases the presentation of exhibits such as papers devices for cheating etc the student charged is then given an opportunity to answer any points of this evidence following these answers the prosecuting at torney begins the examination of the defendant the student charged or his de fender then addresses the arcadia presenting his defense there is no effort to hurry the proceedings here or at any other stage the members of the arcadia who serve as a jury are at liberty to ask questions from time to time after all evidence has been sub mitted the student charged is asked to leave the room the ar cadia then starts a discussion re viewing the whole case these de liberations are made carefully and without haste for each member fully realizes what their decision means to the student charged after coming to a decision the president instructs the secretary to present a written statement of the findings to the secretary of the faculty an effort is made to have this report in the
