manager of basketball by 46 votes fast fielding and good pitching made the game interesting for spectators at the y m c a meeting sun day evening mr walter m wood of philadelphia metropolitan sec retary of the y m c a gave a very interesting and timely ad dress his subject being the in vestment of personality pre ceding mr wood's address miss griswold of bishopthorpe manor favored the audience with a piano solo on thursday april 12 the com bined civil and mining and goo logical societies held a meeting in the mining laboratory the speaker was charles k berkey his talk was on the new catskill aqueduct which is now supplying new york city with water he is an authority on this subject hav ing been one of the consulting geologists for this great engineer ing feat the talk was mainly on the geological difficulties which were encountered he told of the difficulty in sinking the main un der the hudson river and showed exactly how this was done work was done from both land and water men on shore drilled until they struck solid rock the men working on dredges first had to locate a spot in the river where a deep ledge which follows the river bed was at a minimum depth this spot was located at a sharp turn in the river here men bored through rock with diamond point drills and the hole made was lined with con crete the main is partly on the surface of the ground and partly buried his talk was illustrated with some very interesting slides which showed the work in all stages he pointed out how this new aqeduct would help supply the growing need of water in the gxmi metropolis and how it would pre vent any water famine in the sum mer months this one reservoir stores more water than all of the old ones combined the meeting closed with the elec tion of officers the officers elected for 1917-1918 were : president l sargeant 18 vice-president w e tizard 18 ; treasurer j l rosenmiller 19 ; secretary j a holmes 18 ; curators s choc 18 r r repko 18 the cast and chorus of the mus tard and cheese club's production of the fair co-ed are working vigorously to get the play into first class shape for presentation on april 28 at the grand opera house south bethlehem a rehearsal held on monday night in which both units were drilled showed that much work is necessary however with the re hearsals held almost every night from now until the production it is believed that the result will be a most creditable showing the play is a mast amusing and clever composition unlike the ma jority of musical comedies it boasts of a well defined plot not exagger ated and impossible but true to the life at a small college such as the one in which the scenes are laid j mckay 17 plays the leading male role that of davy diekerson who isi almost a senior he has been dragging through his course for six years and as he re marks ' ' couldn t get through if he stayed another six like all the rest of the men students he is in love with the fair co-ed and when she comes to the prom disguised as a midshipman he is the one who helps her escape from the hazing party planned for the unpopular young mididie through her influence dicker son decides to buckle down to work and graduate and on commence ment day he is informed that he has passed everything except astronomy however something turns up at the last minute and dick wins his degree and with it the fair co-ed tickets may be obtained in ad vance from prof p m palmer treasurer of the club or a e bu chanan manager y.m.c.a elections next sunday walter m wood mr wood's address follows the college man recognizes the latent ability within hi roself to in crease his own personal stock and to invest that stock favorably and to perfection by personal stock i don't mean entirely his appear ance his relationship his friend ships but more important than any of these i mean his outlook on life his ■perseverance his indi vidual power in relation to others personality is not personality when severed from these manifestly im portant relations in the development of person ality allow me to indicate a list of fundamental factors in the indi vidual life the home the school the church the individual's civic life his social life his vocation and his recreation the home fosters fellowship frees us of conventionalities with in its walls we are at ease here we receive our advice and offer our sympathies the school influences development of mind body and spirit the church gives us in spiration by inspiration i do not mean a word of hazy significance inspiration is not based upon a spiritual boost — it is a practical thing it plants a spirit in the heart and moves its possessor to interest in his daily tasks civic life promotes co-opera tion — it is a device whereby we set each person to a task and help him through it closely linked with civic life we may place vocation to have a vocation does not mean that a man is extracting money from one man's pocket and placing it in his own it is not a system of foraging it is a system of self ad vancement a means by which a man helps himself and others as to public recreation i believe that the more i say about that the better it is high time that high minded people devote their time to useful recreation too many of us have put on pressure and cannot take it off recreation is self re covery and should be devoted to such i important notice a very important meeting of the sophomore class will be held wed nesday noon in packer hall and it is urged that every member of tke class be present if possible as there are several matters to be settled at once the business will include the election of a sergeant-at-arms and nominations for members of the new epitome board the ques tion of whether the banquet fri day night shall be wet or dry will also be voted upon everybody out ! a bach jr 17 will be the speaker at the y m c a meeting next sunday evening at this meeting the officers of the associa tion for the collegiate year 1917 1918 will be elected the nominees are as follows president r c alden r s lambert and e a mooers the second highest man will receive the office of vice-presi dent secretary r h lindsay j b jacobs and l c fenster macher treasurer e m allan w r penman and l sergeant students who attend the y m c a meetings are urged to be present at this meeting at the college meeting held last friday morning in packer hall l l dixon 19 was elected assistant manager of basketball receiving 161 votes c w warner 19 and t j bray 19 received 115 and 64 votes respectively while the ballots were being col lected h j pardee 17 made an apeal for more men to join the military training class the hour for drill is from 4 to 5 the hour on wednesday is 2 and on saturday there is no drill gym credit will be given for men taking this course j mckay 17 made a report on the findings of the committee ap pointed at the last college meeting to investigate and suggest methods of electing the arcadia he said that many various plans had been submitted by the representatives of the dormitory and fraternity groups and that the committee had been unable to come to a definite solution fourteen of the groups ex pressed themselves in favor of having one man selected from each group but with various modifica tions seven groups wanted to re tain the old system with modifica tions five groups had no sugges tions to offer two groups gave entirely different plans l g mudge 16 moved that we keep the present plan of elec tion of the arcadia this motion was defeated w t staats 18 then moved that one man be elected by each living group a a tate 16 amended this to read that the committee appointed at the last college meeting be instructed to draw up one or two plans along this line of election this motion was passed e f wait lb amended his motion laid over from the last col lege meeting that former class and poster fights be reinstated at the university to read that hazing be reinstated at the uni versity he was asked by f e portz 17 to amend the motion to read that organized hazing be brought back to lehigh under a committee to be appointed by the senior class president as in pre vious years motion carried l e grumbach 17 moved that every incoming freshman attend one tea party and on second offense be reported to the committee motion carried junior prom notice electricals to meet at dr drinker's home arts and science meet thursday evening a meeting of the arts and science club will be held thurs day evening at 7.45 o'clock in drown hall dr peter hoekstra of the business department will speak on the armenian mas timely bat ting good pitching and brilliant fielding lehigh easily defeated the albright nine by a score of 7-2 last saturday afternoon the game was fast and well played the pitching of johnson be ing especially gratifying from a lehigh standpoint he pitched sterling ball allowing albright but seven hits which were well scat tered and after the first inning le iiigh was never in any danger next to the fine pitching of johnson the batting and fielding of captain twombly and fishburn were the outstanding features of the game albright opened auspiciously by scoring two runs in the first inning smith received a base on balls after two men were out zinn and smith were both safe when fishburn s throw pulled twombly off the bag goldhammer's long double to cen ter scored loth of them this ended albright's scoring for the game although they had men on third in the second and eighth innings johnson's fine pitching prevented further scoring lehigh immediately proceeded to tie the score in its half of the inning mathag received a base on balls was sacrificed to second by mccarthy and scored on twom bly s double to right field achorn was safe when hoch took his foot off of the bag he and twombly then worked a delayed double steal the latter scoring although albright threatened in the second inning they were un able to score with men on first and third and one out johnson pulled himself out of a hole by forcing silverman and hoch to ground out to the infield lehigh scored again in its half of the inning maginnes singled to center and went to second when the catcher threw wild to catch him off first connell was safe when troutman threw his bunt to third in an attempt to catch ma ginnes the latter was caught off third when he and connell at tempted a delayed double steal johnson grounded out to trout man mathag's single scored con nell he stole second and was left there when mccarthy filed to kline lehigh scored two runs in the fifth inning twombly reached first on an error by troutman and stole second on the first pitch achorn received a base on balls twombly scored and achorn went to third when greenough threw wild to first achorn scored on lees sacrifice fly to
