this week the epitome is renewing its drive for sub scriptions for the 1928 book the annual this year is one to be proud of and the staff has made record progress in its completion at the present time the entire copy is in the hands of the printer and the book will be delivered just previous to the easter holidays which will be an epoch making event for a lehigh annual the art work in this book is decidedly more extensive than has ever before been attempted here and makes the edition very attrac tive the athletic section and the pictoral review of the col lege year are the features and both are worked up in 8 novel way the fact that the annual is being so successfully and speedily compiled should in sure a large circulation for the current book the campaign is to be con ducted by the combined staffs of the annual and any man on either the editorial or manager ial board will be prepared to take subscriptions beginning this week the price of the boo • is set at 5.00 and that amount represent the lehigh chapter at this convention and will leave bethlehem on thursday for that purpose extensive preparations have been made by the members of the virginia chapter for the convenience and entertainment of the various delegates and a full program has been arrang ed for the convention thurs day evening the convention will open with a meeting of the general council of the fra ternity on friday among other activities will be the presentation of the reports of the chapter delegates these will include a report of the ac tivities of the various chap ters for the past two years and ridsdale will give a report from the lehigh chapter which is expected to equal if not bet ter the report of any other chapter in the fraternity among the outstanding things that the o d k has accomplished at lehigh are the prior memorial project the changing of the date for the christmas holidays fostering the idea of the entertainment of rival teams by undergrad uate organizations discussion of the renewal of the honor system and the fostering of a freshman theme contest entail ing suggestions for college im provements swimmerstrounced by rutgers team professor bradley stough ton head of the department of metallurgical engineering le high university will deliver the henry m howe memorial lecture at the forthcoming an nual meeting of the american institute of mining and metal lurgical engineers in new york city on february 15th the subject of the lecture will be alloy steels this lecture ship was established in mem ory of henry marion howe who was known in his lifetime as the dean of iron and steel metallurgists the lecture is always devoted to some subject related to the life work of dr howe this is its fourth de livery the three previous lec turers were albert sauveur gordon mackay professor of metallurgy and metallography at harvard university on whom lehigh conferred the honorary degree of dr eng last june john a matthews vice president of the crucible steel company of america and william campbell howe pro fessor of metallurgy and metal lography at columbia univer sity continued on page four alloy steels began to be in dustrially important the same year 1889 in which howe published the book that estab lished him the leader in the scientific metallurgy of iron and steel since then alloy steels have increased in im portance until now they three days four members of the faculty presi dent richards and an architect have been visiting various col leges in new england with the purpose of obtaining and ex changing ideas to be incorpor ated coun try the six men of the com mitee dr richards dr esty and prof seyfert of the elec trical department prof lar kin and prof stuart of the me chanical department and a member of the firm of archi tects who will design the build ing have so far visited yale university the massachuetts institute of technology har vard university and rensselaer polytechnic institute at troy n y this completes the first trip on the 27th of february the committee will leave for the second tour this will include a day at cornell followed by a short visit on the following day to the packard motor car com pany at detroit one of the main objects of this visit will be to confer with the engineers of that company on the design of the automobile testing lab oratory which will be install ed in the new building from classes especially the 115 125 and 135-pound classes while syracuse showed up better in the heavier classes louie guerrero and armstrong wres tled their first varsity meets for lehigh and heilman and lehr were shifted into differ ent weight classes presenting an entirely different team from that which wrestled in the first two meets of the season in the 115-pound class ed die mcgovern had no difficulty in bringing okun of syracuse to the mat but was unable to throw him gaining a time ad vantage of 9.51 this was mc governs second win of the sea son out of two starts captain jimmy reed le editorial writing as well as to engage in an impor tant college activity the freshman wrestling team was defeated in what will probably be the most strenuous meet on their schedule when brooklyn polytech ran up a 19-3 score against them at the latter's gym on saturday the meet however was much clos er than the score indicated with two of the bouts going into ex tra periods silverman lehigh 145-pound contestant scored the only points for the brown and white when he secured a time advantage in the extra periods of his bout tifft in the 115-pound class and jones the 135-pounder were both lehigh at new brunswick by a large score 47-10 the lehigh team that faced rutgers natators altho rejuvenated with much new and unpolished material was too inexperienced to perform creditably a rutgers sprint er however was forced by webbe of lehigh who finished second to set a new intercolle giate record in the 440 yard sprint this record time of 5 minutes 32.6 seconds was also a rutgers pool record two new eastern intercolle giate records were set by rut gers men warner in the 440 and levis the backstroke cham pion who outdistanced ahlburg of lehigh in 1 minute 56.8 sec onds were the two
