who won his letter last year will prob ably do the pitching it will be his first appearance against lafa yette mccarthy and mathag are the other two w t ho have as yet to undergo the ordeal lafayette will come here with a practically green team scott lake and welles being new men this year girard brown and dunn are all veteran pitchers who in the past have faced lehigh with more or less success comparing the records of the two teams to date the brown and white has a decided advantage games have been lost to university of virginia georgetown and swarthmore whereas on the other hand such teams as perm perm state seiton hall albright and lebanon valley have bowed before the prowess of the lehigh nine lafayette has won but two games one from perm state am one from carnegie tech both of which were defeated by lehigh in rather hollow fashion they have ernest hamlin abbott one of the editors of the outlook and secretary of the outlook com pany addressed the student bod 7 this morning on the subject the war for a common future the talk was one of the most interest ing college lectures heard for some time in the course of the address he said for over two years we have been trying to keep neutral between right and wrong now that we have entered the war we must not enter it with our will's paralyzed we must stop suppressing the wholesome instinct of taking sides between right and wrong and in stead recover the simple truths we have lost first we must understand our selves as a people is america a nation ? for a hundred and forty years the people of this country have been at work making a nation but so far they have not made one in a recent book e v lucas 1 , the english writer represents one of bis characters a clergyman in america as writing to a friend : ' ' america is something of all ; whereas a nation is all of some thing what it means for a nation to be all of something is clear to any observer who was in france and england as i was at the outbreak of the war in this sense america is not yet a nation there are two great and power ful influences in america against the spirit of nationalism one is the influence of sectionalism the other the influence of the ameri can of alien origin w 7 ho is not yet americanized — the influence of the hyphenate without common traditions without a common inheritance of iu't without that sense of rootage in the past that is expressed in common song without even that recognition of social differences that in some nations is a basis of unity has america anything that unites her people yes it has it has something greater than tradition greater than any artistic inheritance can be greater than a common history greater than any thing in the past that could be re hearsed in song or in story it has what i might call a common future all americans that are worthy of the name have a common ideal a common aspiration a common hope a common faith — the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness even in the civil war in the south as well as in the norths men went to death for this ideal one side believed it meant states right ; the other side believed it meant liberty and union but the ideal itself was never doubted and from this country have gone throughout the world forces that have aided in the liberation of others it is not chance alone that the greater development of libera tion in england the
