missionary s l chang 18 devotional l sargeant 18 ; in dustrial for the present a chairman is unappointed entertainment a e buchanan 18 publicity e m allan 18 ; social service j b ja cob 18 ; music r h lindsay 18 ; student aid c e blasius 18 membership r m stettler 18 handbook f b speakman 18 the various committees that have already ' been appointed will be called upon by the above-mentioned chairmen of the respective commit tees a special committee has been ap pointed for the purpose of looking into the subject matter for the dis cussion groups and to arrange it for submission to the leaders of the fraternity houses and dormitory sections next year a meeting of this committee has been called by professor p m palmer chairman for this after noon the regular twilight sing will be held next sunday evening at 6 15 when there will be a half hour spent in short snappy singing hymns will be sung and special music will be rendered in addition the first sing was held last sun day evening and was a decided suc cess mr j m frey lehigh y m c a secretary was present at the naturalization court last monday at a special session when 68 peti tions were presented before presi dent judge stewart of the north ampton county court it may be noted that all of the members of the free evening school taught by lehigh students and under the di rection of the lehigh y m c a who petitioned received their natu ralization papers it may also be well to remember that men who had made previous application and were denied while not in attendance at the school were later accepted and able to pass the examination after having been in attendance epitome notice the brown and white cinder path artists have been working hard all week in preparation for the dual meet with swarthmore at swarthmore tomorrow afternoon try-outs for the various events have been held during the week and the results of the try-outs were as follows 100-yard dash pengelly first hunt second morrissey third 220-yard dash : pengelly first ; morrissey second ; bailey third the 440-yard dash was a neck and neck race to the finish by har vey and doan harvey finally crossing the tape a winner only by a few inches 880-yard run : downer first ; hartzel second mile run : wilson first ; hartzel second fisher is about the best choice in the two-mile event while in the high and low hurdles ryerson and heck are about evenly matched herrington and lind are doing good work in the high jump while herrington and young are the choice for pole vault the broad jump is being rather closely con tested between lind morrissey downer and schussler schnerr and walther seem well able to be counted on to score in the weights captain mcgrath is still bothered to a great extent by his ankle which is slowly rounding into shape from present indications the team which will make the trip to swarthmore is as follows : sprints : pengelly morrissey and hunt ; 440 dash downer doan harvey and morrissey half mile downer mc grath and hartzel ; mile : mcgrath and wilson ; two mile : fisher ; hurdles ryerson and heck high jump herrington lind : pole vault : herrington and young ; weights schnerr and walther the intersicholastics which were scheduled to be held here june 2 have been called off owing to the fact that most of the high and pre paratory schools which would be entered will probably be closed early on account of present un settled conditions a rare treat is in store for track enthusiasts of lehigh and sur rounding territory in the form of the intercollegiates to be held here saturday may 19 a notice 1919 class elections the following members of the class of 1919 were elected last wednesday to hold office in their junior year : president j n kennedy vice-president r r coffin ; secretary j j shipherd j b walker sergeant-at-arms c p twombly historian j h wagner in a fast well-played game the university of pittsburg defeated the varsity by a 3-2 score wednes day afternoon at the beginning of the ninth in ning the score stood 1-1 hastings opened pitt's half by receiving a base on balls he was sacrificed 1 to second by carlson and scored ahead of sies when the latter poled one over the right field fence for a home run lehigh came back with a rally in its half but failed to tie the score after twombly had grounded out maginnes doubled to deep center and scored when lees singled to right boland ran for lees but was left stranded on the bases when connell fanned the game was close and interest ing from start to finish with both johnson and langdon pitching gilt edge ball johnson allowed but four hits and captain langdon five pitt was the first to break the row of goose eggs ■kuhlman the first man up was safe on an error by twombly when the latter left mccarthy's throw get by him kuhlman took second on the play was sacrificed to third by fred lander and scored on geisel's single to center lehigh tied the score in the sixth mathag walked and went to second on mccarthy's single fishburn sacrificed and mathag scored on twombly s hit to right although a hit would have meant two runs the two men following were retired and the scoring was over for that inning mathag brought the crowd to its feet in the fourth when he pulled a seemingly impossible catch of a hard hit ball from hastings s bat although the hit seemed a sure two bagger mathag raced over to deep right center and leaping high in the air pulled the ball down just as it was about to hit the wall it was easily the most spectacular play made on taylor field this year achorn also made several fine stops as did mccarthy for pittsburg the work of sies and hastings coupled with langdon s pitching was sufficient to give them the victory the score : continued on sixth page dormitory drawings lehigh s undefeated lacrosse team added another victim to its string wednesday afternoon when it downed the strong university of pennsylvania twelve on franklin field philadelphia by the score of 5 to 4 in an extra fifteen-minute period the game was close from start to finish there never being more than one point separating the two teams at any time at the end of the second half the score stood 4 to 4 necessitating the extra period whitey lewis • with a pretty toss scored the goal which gave an other championship to the brown and white greer made the first score of the game when he carried the ball al most the whole length of the field burgunder and wessman of perm each scored soon after making it 2 to 1 in favor of the red and blue lewis shortly after tied the score with a well-placed shot into the net derrick of perm and o'brien lehigh were each credited with additional points making the score 3 to 3 at the end of the first half in the second half lehigh came back strong and carried the attack into perm's territory thomas for lehigh and derrick of perm were the only ones to score in this half in the extra period lewis shot the winning goal his second for the af ternoon the field was in poor playing condition and the men had diffi culty in keeping their feet in the scrimmages frequent penalties were imposed on both sides for un necessary roughness and in the second half keppler the perm wrestler was banished from the game both tate and jones put up good games at goal this completes the lacrosse sched ule for the season cancellations because of the war lost lehigh three big that the first summer school due to its late start will ex tend over until july 1.1 the courses to be given this summer are listed below and are intended pri marily for students of the uni versity but any one not connected with the university may be ad mitted if properly qualified written applications for ad mission to the different courses be ginning iru august and september must be made to the secretary of the faculty before june 9 1917 if the applications for any of these courses are not sufficient in number to warrant giving them they will be abandoned no university instructor will give
