trumbull and sullivan meet contenders from 1 2 leading college teams trips desired no road tours planned as yet due to lack of backing final score 30-20 syracuse strong this year scarlet weak annual meet tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 the varsity grapplers will stage their third meet of the season when they oppose the syracuse matmen ; prospects look good for a brown and white vic tory this is the first meet since the one point margin defeat by princeton on january 22 be cause of the exams the mats in the wrestling room have re cently been rather deserted but the team is now in first class condition and anxious to make this the next to the last home meet of the season a decisive victory last saturday syracuse suf fered a severe defeat at the hands of perm state who beat second half with a field goal to tie the score and a little later moe schaub followed it up with another to take the lead from then on lehigh was never in danger the second half was punctuated with many fouls although few of the tries were made and for a few minutes there was an interesting dis turbance outside of the regular game later in the game there were a number of substitutions on the brown and white team but any combination seemed to have no trouble in scoring against the up-river aggrega tion borrelli was rarely al lowed to shoot and the others on his team seemed to have continued on page six regulars had piled up seven points against them the first team was put on the floor and the real action of the game was started the first score for the brown and white was made by bill meyer on a foul try and a lit tle later earl schaub shot the first field goal made by the var sity on the new floor billmey er scored again and then smith found the basket and the score stood 12-8 in favor of the op ponents just before the half ended smith was taken out and hesse took his place and sig nalized his entry by imme diately making a field goal the half ended with the score 12-10 in favor of muhlenberg in the second half muhlen berg pulled a surprise in the form of nick borrelli who had not appeared on the floor until that time hesse started the them by a 22-5 score kirk patrick scored the only points for syracuse by gaining a fall in the 158 pound class war ner captain and 145 pounder was only beaten by a time de cision in extra periods and will bear watching tomorrow the syracuse line-up is not definitely known but it is sup posed that the same men will wrestle who opposed perm state these include okun 115 pounds tucker 125 pounds novak 135 pounds warner capt 145 pounds kirkpatrick the scarlet is out to atone for last year's defeats tomorrow evening the frosh basketball team will swing into action against the rutgers yearlings after the lay-off of two weeks occasioned by mid year examinations the game will be played in the ballen tine gymnasium at new bruns wick as a preliminary to the varsity contest and constitutes one of the athletic attractions of alumni day at the scarlet institution the lehigh quintet after having won its first two home games by comfortable mar gins will endeavor to score a victory in its first game on a foreign floor and thereby keep its slate clean that such a purpose can be achieved is very likely for the opponents of the brown and white have not compiled a very formidable rec ord to date the rutgers frosh have lost every one of their three games george washing ton high school of new york city was the victor in their in augural by a 45-40 count the new york university frosh next took their measure 34-17 the hun school five of annual in door intercollegiate tennis tournament being conducted this week under the auspices of the cornell athletic council lehigh is in competition with twelve eastern and mid-west ern colleges harvard ond ohio state have been the last schools to an nounce their entrance into the tournament in addition to these schools lehigh will be competing with the best men from colgate columbia michi gan perm syracuse williams yale and cornell the total number of individual entries has been brought to thirty-four lehigh will be represented by captain neil sullivan mid dle atlantic states conference champion and al trumbull veteran of two seasons because seligson national indoor jun ior champion and conqueror of wright captain of the dav is cup team of canada is only a freshman he could not be entered in the cornell tourna ment among the players who will appear next friday will be the best amateurs in intercollegiate tennis some of these men neil sullivan met last year in the intercollegiates and defeat ed of harvard will be present he and sulli van have met before the hon ors at the previous meeting go ing to whiteback watson of yale craft of pennsylvania and march of to be brought back combination sing and tea to be held at 3 00 on sunday the concert season of the musical clubs will begin immediately following the op ening of the second semester with a series of local enter tainments this will be pre liminary to the longer trips now being booked for the or ganization bishopthorpe manor will again be included in the list of local audiences this concert and the joint moravian semin ary and lehigh club concert at a later date will be the impor tant events on the local calen dar another program will also be rendered on february 24 for the bethlehem odd fel lows annually this organiza tion entertains the clubs and is considered as one of their most appreciative audiences the quartette gave a short enter tainment for them in january that went over in good style concerts other than local must be taken into considera tion but cannot be undertaken because of the financial con sideration involved the clubs are very anxious to give pro grams in new jersey and in pottsville and reading but the enthusiasm of the ttlumni has been almost negligible when a guarantee to defray the ex penses is requested students from these localities are urged to encourage their friends to talk up the clubs and thus pave the way to future concerts the organization itself is in an exceptionally healthy condi tion by the time that the final concert dates are set the lead ers will present a program which will not only represent the conscientious endeavor of every member to better himself but a program resplendent with movements that are popular as well as classical the brown as sistant professor of history at lehigh university before the bethlehem kiwanis club re cently prof brown began his ad dress by explaining the origin of the word democracy which originated from the state of demos in greece which ruled the athenian democracy al though democracy at that time was not used in the same sense as it is usually considered at the present time since in the grecian republic the ruling state represented but a minor portion of the entire country whereas today the term is sup posed to include the entire country the term democracy as used today means rule by the major ity vote of the adult popula tion and the question often arises whether or not this is the wisest method of control of the government said the speak er under this method any body is allowed to vote he add ed as long as he meets the phy sical requirements of adult manhood or womanhood and is not considered in the class of feeble-minded one of the er rors of the present-day dem ocracy as considered by the speaker is the tendency to reg ulate human conditions and habits by law the absurdities of which have been evidenced in connection with the enforce ment of the eighteenth amend ment are now in the midst of another string of tri umphs the crescent combination in variably turns out sensational teams season after season they play on an average of three times a week their op ponents chief engineer on the gigantic conowingo dam project outlined some of the problems confronting the en gineers and also gave detailed information concerning the magnitude of the undertaking the dam is to be thrown across the susquehanna river just over the boundary line be tween pennsylvania and mary land it will form a pool ten miles long extending back into pennsylvania approximately a mile wide and one hundred or more feet deep power gene rated at the dam will be used in philadelphia and in time in surrounding territory mr funk illustrated his talk with slides which showed the project in process of comple tion the dam is being erected in such a way that^a bridge connecting the baltimore pike can be formed on top of it the bridge is expected to be in use by next july in order to make this possible alternate blocks of the dam are being erected now when these are up they will form the piers for the bridge and later the other sections of the dam will be put in the undertaking represents a capital cost of 52,000,000 five million of this sum was expended to secure rights and concessions it will be neces sary for example to relay a portion of railroad which is on the west
