walter carl riddick 90 taylor allderdice 83 and homer d williams 87 others in the service jesse f wentz 17 writes in teresting article on the officers reserve corps routine outlined dr schwab to speak lehigh represented by fourteen men forty=five from lafayette many seniors already enrolled in direct national service and in industries an expression of lehigh patriot ism will be sounded by head of bethlehem steel co quite a few classes have signified their intentions of holding re unions over the commencement festivities the class badges how ever that will blossom forth most abundantly on the campus tomor row will undoubtedly be those of everybody's class 66 it has been decided to adorn all return ing alumni who are not members of regular reunion classes with at tractive button badges with the numerals p 66 signifying the year in which the university first opened its doors all members of y66y 66 will be guests of 96 at an informal gathering and smoker in the bethlehem club tonight the class of 1896 pro poses in this manner to celebrate winning the 91 reunion trophy cup last june the class of 1882 intends to hold its thirty-fifth reunion to morrow charles c hopkins rochester n v has charge of the arrangements and w r rites that ' ' the five living graduates of the class will be present and as many of the non-graduates as we can muster in there are eleven of the latter whose addresses are known a din ner may be decided upon the class of 87 will hold a ban quet this evening at the northamp ton country club stand by your class and the flag and help capture that re unon cup ! ' ' are the slogans of the committee in charge of the twenty fifth year reunion of the class of 1892 the committee believes that existing conditions are all the more reason for having the reunion this year if for no other purpose than to pledge our united loyalty to the flag and to american ideals and principles the class will have its headquarters at third and new t streets the banquet will be held this evening at eight o'clock at the gontinued on eighth page an interesting letter on the life and routine at fort niagara has been received by the managing editor from jesse f wentz 17 who is a member of the fifth in fantry the letter follows company 5 fort niagara n y dear ' ' fenstie ' ' : the lehigh men in camp as far as i can find out are prof butter field thirteenth artillery miles kresge 16 thirteenth artillery doc keiser 16 tenth cavalry ; d kirkpatrick 17 sixth in fantry dick halliwell ex 18 bob campbell 18 j f wentz fifth infantry vie lehr 19 third infantry l bevan 20 fifth infantry tom boggs 20 first infantry f krom 18 first infantry j h chandler 16 c sanderson ex lb tenth cavalry and h f maclaughlin 18 there are 275 men here from perm 180 from state 30 from dickinson about 45 from lafa yette and 14 from lehigh this looks rather poor for us but then some of our men went to fort myers plattsburgh and fort madi son and all the lafayette men came up here together there are five lafayette men in my company in cluding our old athletic opponents dick diamond and gerard our time is pretty well taken up as you can see by the roster fol lowing revielle sounds at 5.45 which means that we get up about continued on seven 1 h page the commencement exercises of the class of 1917 will be held to morrow morning at 10.30 o'clock in packer memorial church owing to the early graduation this year of practically the whole senior class of the university and the enngagement of the men in in dustrial work serving war pre paredness and in military and naval service " there is doubt whether more than a small propor tion of the class will be in attend ance the commencement exer cises had 1 originally been scheduled for tuesday june 12 but by action of the trustees and faculty in consultation with the president of the alumni association it was de cided to hold the exercises on alumni day this will enable the alumni to be present at the granting of the honorary degree of doctor of laws to wallace carl riddick 90 now president of the north caro lina college of agriculture and mechanic arts and the degree of master of science on taylor all derdice 83 vice-president of the national tube company and on homer d williams 87 president of the carnegie steel company these short commencement exer cises will be immediately followed by the business meeting of the alumni association to convene in the church at 11.30 a.m alumni day will be made the oc casion of an expression of lehigh patriotism the keynote will be sounded in the address to be de livered by dr charles m schwab continued on eighth page the annual bach festival held last friday and saturday in packer memorial chapel was crowded at each of the four re citals according to old custom the moravian trombone choir summoned the people to each ses sion from the chapel tower the three hundred voice bach choir was assisted by members of the philadelphia orchestra and seven soloists mjarie stoddard and mil dred faas sopranos marie mor rissey and grace harden ' altos ; nicholas douty tenor ; and charles tittmann and louis kreidler basses mr kreidler at one time was a student at lehigh being a member of the class of 1897 dr j fred wolle the director of the choir one time organist of lehigh deserves much credit for the musical suscess that the choir made as he has been laboring ceaselessly all winter on rehearsals mr wolle has conducted choirs in the bethlehems since he was nine teen but the first choir which was distinctly a bach choir was or ganized and conducted here in 1898 the dream of mr wolle was to have a choir that could render the difficult mass in b minor john sebastian bach's best work and in 1900 his dream came true and the mass was heard for the first time in america in the century-old mo ravian church when in 1905 dr wolle ac cepted a call to the chair of music in the university of california the bulk of bethlehem's choral work came to rest upon his former pupil t edgar shields lehigh s present organist in addition to the im mediate artistic profit of mr shields work was the immeasur able value of his choir of 125 voices consecutively trained to the bach movement dr wolle returned to bethlehem in 1911 and since then continued on eighth page a mere remnant of the two hun dred and fifty-one men w t ho entered with the graduating class will be present at the exercises to receive their diplomas tomorrow morning the faculty had not voted upon the degrees when this issue went to press hence it is impossible to give the exact number of men to be graduated but this difficulty has been greatly added to by the fact that many of the members are now out doing work in the industrial it was early in may that about forty-eight members of the class were present to then say farewell to the faculty this exercise was a mere supplement to those of tomor row then professors thornburg and klein made short speeches and dr drinker with e g grace 99 gave sound advice to the men who were then about to depart that was one month ago and then over half of the class had taken leave some never to return save as alum ni since then the majority of those left have entered the federal service as reserve officers . or as members of the naval reserve and other fields of direct national ser vice but most of them have en tered the indirect service of the country in industrial service into the factories they have gone as en gineers to begin to learn early their duties thus better fitting them for the problems which the war will compel them to solve or assist in solving this tendency to take a place in the vast industrial army has been marked in the graduating class for they have been reluctant continued on fifth page lehigh university bethlehem pa friday june 8 1917 the brown and white vol xxiv graduating class of 1917 senior degrees given tomorrow bach festival again delights large crowds a letter from fort niagara degrees for three alumni class reunions to be held over alumni day recitals held in packer memorial church former lehigh organist director only one=half of the class will be present at graduation exercises everybody's class 66 will have the most men back at the university no 55
