student body will elect ten men at first college meeting xext friday mornino at 1100 o clock an important college meet ing will be held in drown hall sec . ml floor the chief object of this meeting will be the election of the arcadia the following being the list of eligible members a a fate capt football s fishburn capt baseball f w green capt lacrosse and p.asketb.iil b i clement mgr lacrosse j m ikirke capt track h d keiser mgr track and editor-in-chief of the brown and white f l kirkhuff capt wrestling m b gunn mgr wrestling e c hummel mgr basketball , junior president v b staats sompomore pres ident e s johnston editor-in-chief of the lehigh burr w wj gilmore editor-in-chief of the epitome w h alexander 1 mgr of the brown and wi-r h i fair bus mgr of the lehigh burr j r randolph bus mgr of the epitome k a lambert president mus tard and cheese o l carlson head cheerleader i ii icriigg athletic represen tative at large j h reitzel dormitory chief of the above list of twenty mien ten are to be elected two other men who must be juniors in good stancing are also to be elected to the arcadia the senior presi dent the manager of football and manager of baseball continue to act on the arcadia the former ex officio and the two latter being elected as junior members last fall the election to fill the vacancy of junior president will take place on wednesday appointed by secretary of navy to serve on new board announcement was made last week of the appointment of dr jo seph w richards professor of metallurgy at lehigh to the xaval board of inventions this board was recently created by secretary of the navy daniels who named thomas a edison as chairman secretary daniels asked eleven of the principal scientific societies of the country whose members deal with those branches of science on which the xavy is thought to be dependent for inventions to choose by popular election two oi their members to represent the mon the board the american electro chemical society of which dr richards is past president and at present secretary chose as its rep resentatives on the board dr rich ards and lawrence addicks of chrome n j metallurgical engi neer and president of the society the board will consist of twenty three members including mr edi son who was selected by mr dan iels to serve as the presiding officer the scientific societies represented are the american aeronautical society the american society of automobile engineers the in/ven to-rs guild the american chemi cal society the american institute of american engineers the amer ican mathematical society the american society of civil engi neers the american institute of mining engineers the american electro-chemical society the american society of mechanical engineers and the american so ciety of aeronautic engineers the appointment of dr richardis to serve on this board is a mark of his ability and a recognition of the high position he holds in the metal lurgical world and reflects honor not only on himself but on the uni versity which is so fortunate as to command his services he was graduated from lehigh in the class of 86 with the degree of a c junior election typhoid inoculation at minimum charge the election of the junior presi dent to fill the vacancy caused by gocft leaving college will be held wednesday afternoon from 1 to 3 o'clock in the lecture room of pack er hall the candidates are a bad jr p s hanway d h kirkpatrick n pons and j h randolph large and promising squad is at work under coach keady few vacancies only four members of last year's team will not return with the opening of college last wednesday afternoon the first foot ball practice was held on taylor field about sixty men answered the first call but the squad is daily being rapidly increased by new re cruits the practice has consisted of signal practice kicking and the usual preliminary work coach keady has a very competent force of assistants this year in reiter hoban and sawtelle every evidence of a good team is shown by the fact that only four men of last year's stellar team are missing namely hoban sawtelle desmond and good the men who have reported for practice are tate keady kirk patrick pons halsted lambert mingel knoss ayrault grace w jennings r jennings shockley sonimers inge smith heuer mc greggor e p schmidt campbell richards scruggs robinson green broboisia crawford sullivan cahall 1 h b heuer keady r h b smith halsted f . b campbell journal prints article by prof f p mckibben notice y m c a gives reception to entering men faculty in attendance good entertainment music and short speeches are features everybody gets acquainted the annual freshman reception under the auspices of the y m c a was held in drown hall last friday evening september 17th the reception was unusually well attended by the students as it was the first opportunity for the fresh men to meet the faculty and upper classmen the program which consisted of interesting speeches and good mu sic not to forget the refreshments made the evening an enjoyable one president drinker made the open ing address and welcomed the in coming class he commented up on the unusually high grade of scholarship shown by the freshmen in their entrance exams marion chase neumeyer a soloist of repute delighted the audience with several solos she was accom panied by miss mamie heller mr j e gheen coach of the mustard and cheese gave several humorous readings j m frey general secretary of the y m c a then made the an nouncements and plans for the new school year p s hanway 17 then urged the men to join the y m c a the greater the member ship of the association the more work it will be able to accomplish 80-sey reiter spoke on ath letics emphasizing the necessity of a sound mind in a sound body in order to be a real man his talk contained a wealth of good advice and made a deep impression upon those present j mckay 17 rendered sev eral tenor solos accompanied by j b hill 16 chairman of the music committee one of the features of the even ing was the first appearance of the new year of the lehigh university orchestra which under the leader ship of george smith 16 rendered excellent music the speaker for next sunday ev ening will be dr john h clewell pres of moravian seminary and college for women who has cho sen for his subject successful be ginnings dr clewell is an old favorite and will have a message which will be of profit for every one to hear several musical num bers have been arranged am important college meeting will be rftld next friday morning at 11 o'clock in drown hall second floor only members of three upper class es will attend this meeting sophomores notice cheering practices on taylor field students desiring to take the ty phoid inoculation will leave their names at the president's office not later than founder's day saturday october 2nd the charge including the actual cost of the vaccine will not exceed 2 the place and dates of inoculation will be announced later dr estes joins me in recommend ing this treatment as a desirable pre cautionary health measure the statistics of the u s army show a remarkable decrease in typhoid mortality since the many papers throughout pennsylvania the article is accompanied by nu merous photographs and drawings exercises in chapel last wed nesday opened the fiftieth college year changes in faculty prof w s franklin resigns as head of physics dept new instructors at 3.30 o'clock wednesday af ternoon the fiftieth college year was officially opened in packer memorial church in a short service president drinker in his remarks referred to lehigh s position among the colleges of the country as shown by its activities in the diff erent nation-wide movements more prominently exemplified in the stu dent military camps various peace societies and forestry organizations as to what her graduates are doing he made mention of prof richard's recent selection as a member of secretary of the navy daniels na val board these things he said have gradually placed lehigh in a position far at the head of the list of american colleges and univer sities he welcomed the entering class and gave them a bit of sound ad vice as to what would be expected of them as lehigh meni indicating his confidence in their ability to be loyal and true to the brown and white the announcement of professor franklin's resignation as head of the physics department was greatly regretted by the student body prof barry macnutt will be acting head of the department president drinker announced the following promotions : — , james c
