big doings arranged in prepara tion for annual indian game the first football smoker will be held in taylor gymnasium to-night at seven-thirty for the purpose of instilling enthusiasm in the student body for the game with the carlisle indians on saturday one of the coaches will tell just how well the team is conditioned a member of last year's team will describe the last game and show how it was won one of the team that will play on saturday will tell the attitude of the team toward the game an unusually interesting program has been arranged by the hustling committee and all of the numbers will be genuine features in the first place there will be a talk by bosey reiter george hoban 15 captain of last year's team has been induced to give a talk tate 16 captain of the team this year will give some pointers and perhaps a little inside dope dr drinker is expected to look in and say a few words and perhaps will bring the members of the board of trus tees in addition to these talks there will be two wrestling bouts and mu sic by a quartette pipes and tobacco will be distrib uted to all in order that the atmos phere be a suitable setting for the function the freshmen will not be disturbed and will be allowed ample time to get home glee club try-outs annual exercises in memory of asa packer in the chapel to-morrow noted speaker address will be given by judge f m trexler of allen town penna a half century has passed since asa packer gave the money which made lehigh university a fact the life of our founder was not that of a more modern millionaire's son beginning as a poor boy he worked hi's way to the top and was recog nized as one of the nation's wealth iest and most influential men he served in the state legislature and later in congress second only to his ventures in railroad and canal building was the founding of our university note from dr drinker september 30 1915 to the student body : i wish to urge upon you the duty that rests on all lehigh men to be present at the exercises in the chap el on founder's day this is the one day of the year that is set apart to do honor to the memory of the man to whom we owe our alma mater it is decidedly the most im portant function of the year at le high university and it behooves us all to join in its observance the four clashes occupy their ac customed seats and i look forward to seeing a general wmterhalter candidates to be called out about october 10th sev eral vacancies league formed league includes haverford univ of penna swarthmore la fayette and lehigh for the past two years soccer at lehigh has been under the manage ment of the soccer association and has during that time put up a re markable showing for a sport that received almost no support from the university athletic association soccer was not recognized as a form of athletics at lehigh but car ried itself along on its own merits and the support given it by the stu dait body regardless of these facts the team did exceedingly well and at the start of last year which was the second one was placed in the blue mountain league an a chievement which reflects well on the soccer association the blue mountain league is composed of such teams as the bethlehem re serves nativity f c lafayette easton f c allentown east banr gor lehighton pen argyl and the standard a a this year things have changed at a meeting of the athletic asso ciation last spring it was voted that soccer be made a minor sport at lehigh by this soccer receives some support from the college at large other than that received from individual students the team will receive the support of the lehigh a a which goes farther to show the progress made by the soccer association last spring in phila delphia a league composed of hav erford university of pennsylvania swarthmore and lafayette was formed at the time of this writing the schedule has not been completed but will include games with other members of the league along with several independent teams while the team is also in the blue moun tain league it is not required to fol low the league schedule but is priv ileged to compete for the champion ship cup at the end of the season capt henderson expects to issue a call for candidates on or about october 10th it is hoped that a large squad will report especially that the freshmen will respond as that class probably contains some good material there are several vacancies from last year and with constant practice and fair ability these open positions may be filled men of last year's squad who are in college are capt henderson lewis clement tizard lees lehr morrison jennings magee hoag land and reese try-outs for the glee club were held on wednesday afternoon and some excellent material was discov ered about thirty-five new men mostly freshmen were out and judging from the quality of the ma terial the prospects for a successful year are good the executive committee dis cussed plans for an extensive sea son trips to new york and ger mantown pa being certain while chances for repeating the trip made last year to wilmington and balti more are promising after the first cut the men re tained are as october 7th cross-country candidates carlisle team has one victory and one tied game to its credit close game expected probable lehigh line-up same as that used against ursinus last year lehigh defeated the in dians by the score of 21 to 6 to date the indians have played two games this season ; defeating al bright college 21 to 7 and being held to a scoreless tie by lebanon valley college last saturday in the latter game the aborigines were somewhat handicapped by being mi nus two of the regular varsity — hawk eagle at guard and henry broker at quarter-back both of these men will be in the game to morrow and will greatly strengthen the team although surprised by their showing against lebanon val ley they are not discouraged the indians realize that they have a hard game to-morrow and are coming here with the desire to avenge themselves for the defeat which they sustained last year dur ing the week much time was spent at signals which were changed in preparation for the lehigh game several new plays which have prov en effective in scrimmage have also been perfected calac the power ful redskin whose work featured last year's game and who was men tioned last season as one of the best backfield men in the country is captain of the team this year on the whole coach keady is satisfied with the form shown by the lehigh men thus far in the sea son especially gratifying is the work of the two dozen new re cruits from among whom he hopes to develop the material to boost up the weak spots on the eleven coach keady during the week devoted much time to the second and third teams his object being to develop extra half-backs and ends the bucking strap for half-backs and tackling the dummy for linemen were brought out for the first time this week considerable time was also spent in breaking up forward passes hallowell the midget substitute quarter-back got into the game for the first time on tuesday and he drove the men with his old-time magnetic power halsted the var sity full-back has recovered from his attack of tonsilitis but a bad ankle will keep him out of the in dian game comparing the work of the two teams thus far this season lehigh appears to be the better team on paper and should emerge from the game victorious however choos ing the winning team by comparing records is rather unreliable for in football so many unexpected things can happen and usual fall lacrosse practice will start next tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock the squad will be in charge of one of last year's varsity l men the primary object of this fall practice is to get the new men ac quainted with the proper method of handling a lacrosse stick and a fun damental idea of the game so that when coach grimes arrives in the spring regular practice can start immediately only six of last year's 11 men are in college this year which leaves six vacancies to be filled next spring this is an unusual oppor tunity for nncrw r men as lacrosse is the one sport in w t hich very few men who enter lehigh have had any previous experience the large building now in the process of construction at the foot of the campus on the corner of brodhead and packer avenues is being erected by the borough of south bethlehem for educational purposes when completed at an estimated cost of 200,000.00 the building will be one of the most up-to-date high schools in this part of the country the building proper will be a three-story structure of light brick and as planned will have forty-two separate rooms all the latest im provements are to be installed in cluding a domestic science depart ment for the girls as well as a man ual training school and wood-work ing department for the boys in the basement will be located a large gymnasium with a locker for every student on the one side of the gymnasium floor but on a high er level the cooking and sewing rooms will be located on the other side there will be several large rooms for use in connection with manual training work on the first floor there will be a huge auditorium this room with the balcony running around it will furnish a seating capacity of 1400 person this together with the large and deep stage planned for it will make it a fine hall for enter tainments and other high school af fairs on the same floor will be located some of the recitation rooms and several offices the second floor will be used en tirely for class rooms while the top floor will contain all the large rooms such as physical and chem ical laboratories drawing rooms and study hall the commercial department will also be situated on this floor the
