benfer in line-up lehigh crippled brown and white minus services of chenoweth keady pons and kirkpatrick this saturday lehigh has two football games on her schedule the varsity plays albright on taylor field while the scrubs travel to mercersburg pa to line up against the mercersburg academy it has been several years since lehigh's scrub team has had a scheduled game and longer still since lehigh has had athletic relations with mer cersburg mercersburg is famed for its ath letic supremacy among preparatory schools and this season seems to be on a par with if not surpassing previous years the blue and white eleven so far has held the princeton freshmen to a 3 to 0 score and defeated the lafayette scrubs 7 to 0 judging by scores one can surmise that the game will be a close one and that the scrubs will have to be in keen shape to land a victory lehigh will be represented by a fairly strong team one on which several players have seen varsity duty and others are first string substitutes the squad will proba bly leave on friday afternoon or evening a possible line-up is as follows : robinson or mcdonald center ; mac g r ego r and knoss guards ; becker and inge tackles ; chapman and achorn ends ; lind schafer kennedy and tomlinson backfield university exten sion courses to-morrow afternoon on taylor field the brown and white warri ors will line up against albright lehigh is in a crippled condition owing to the injuries oi chenoweth keady kirkpatrick and pons hal stead who has been out of the game all season with a bad ankle is again in good shape and will probably start the game cahall will proba bly call signals while maginnes halstead boland hazeltine early and lieuer will fill in the rest of the back field albright with haps benfer in the line-up comes fresh from a 20 to 0 victory over dickinson and hopes to duplicate the feat against lehigh benfer who was injured early in the season started last sat urday and was the king-pin in al bright's offense scoring the majori ty of the points against dickinson to-morrow will give the specta tors a chance to watch some of the second-string men in action be cause of the first team's crippled drown hall on wednesday after noon the by-laws of the club were gone over some changes were made and they were more or less re-arranged plans were discussed for the com ing year and it was decided to hold the annual variety show some time in december the show will be held early in the evening and will be followed by a university dance the first variety show was held last year and took the place of the annual minstrel show after the minstrel club had combined with the mustard and cheese club the variety show last year while quite a success in itself was an innova tion here and this year's show is expected to far surpass last year's provided the men in college who have talent in this line will come out when the call for candidates is made the variety show when first or ganized was expected to take the place of a preliminary to the mus tard and cheese shows the best men being picked for the leading roles in the latter attraction this method of selection would be a great improvement over the present one where the men are simply se lected from a few weeks of prac tice and do not have the advantage of appearing before an audience it is expected that the club will take a trip this season but nothing definite has been arranged discussion meetings the bible study committee of the y m c a held a meeting in drown hall on wednesday octo ber 13th h i fair chairman of the committee is arranging for a series of get-together meetings in the dormitories and various fra ternity houses for the purpose of spending a short time in the sensi ble discussion of everyday matters which daily confront the college man these meetings have already proved very profitable in previous years it is hoped that a little seri ous consideration of matters of timely interest give just the need ed impetus to a man's individual thought sixteen fraternities as well as the dormitories were represented at the meeting so that the movement seems to be promised popular sup port maryland club meets the many out the missing ones be ing sophomores and freshmen who were practicing for the class teams that competed on founder's day from now on practice will be held on the upper field every tuesday and thursday afternoon at four o'clock as it is managed now anybody whether he has ever played lacrosse or not may come out and practice with the regulars the squads are divided so that everyone is under the personal supervision of an l man this system being adopted in the absence of the regular coaches this practice is held for two rea sons : to keep the men who know how to play in trim for the spring and to teach the others how to handle a stick there are manly openings on the team which have to be filled and this offers a chance to everybody considering the fact that six varsity lacrosse men were graduated last june the prospects for a successful season are good among those who reported on tuesday were barkley 17 carl son 16 schulz 17 o'brien 17 shockley 17 and downey 18 university dance chemists meet to-night the meeting of the chemical so ciety called for a week ago thurs day will be held to-night at 7.30 in saucon hall the first university dance of the year will be given to-morrow night at 8 o'clock in drown hall van eps orchestra will furnish the music the charge is seventy-five cents a couple 1919 men can discard black ties and socks for the com ing year sophs out-classed first-year men win football and baseball games 1918 wins relay race the class of 1919 in winning the majority of the founder's day sports from the sophomores have earned the privilege of discarding their black socks and ties for the rest of their college career the freshies were jubilant over their success and after the last event they celebrated their victory by throwing their socks and ties into the bonfire which had been started the brand of neckwear and hose worn by the freshmen since their victory is the loudest seen in this town for many a day the winning of these sports by 19 tends to offset somewhat the earlier victories gained by 18 in the banner rush and founder's eve scrap as had been predicted the fresh men won the football and baseball games while the sophs were victors in the relay race to say however that 19 had a cinch would be doing 18 an in justice the result of the football game was in doubt until near the latter part of the game the base ball game was closely contested un til the sixth inning when 18 blew the relay race furnished the big gest surprise the sophomores were picked easy winners but 19 produced a team which furnished the most thrilling inter-class race seen in years possibly the most pleasing phase of the day's sports to the college at large was the excellent athletic ability shown by the new class this showing forecasts good var sity material for the next few years the football game the first event of the afternoon was the football game which result ed in a 10 to 0 victory for the freshmen lack of practice proved 18 unr doing the freshmen's line held like a stone wall and line plunges constituted practically all of the plays earned by 18 in their scant practice neither team scored during the first half o-f the game although 18 came near doing so wheni whitney and lewis advanced the ball to the freshmen's 25-yard line the half ended at this point be fore any damage was done it was in the third quarter that 19 scored their touchdown a beautiful forward pass from tomlinson to r jennings brought 19 within striking distance of the goal kennedy in two tries scored a touchdown through center mac dowell kicked the goal the freshmen scored their other three points in the fourth period when the backfield and another for ward pass tomlinson to r jen nings brought the ball to the 25 yard line kennedy proved himself a sec ond billy cahall by scoring a neat drop-kick whitney and lewis played best for 18 while the work of r jen nings kennedy macgregor hur ley macdowell and tomlinson stood out prominently for 19 continued on fourth page the civil engineering society held its first meeting of the year last night in the physics lecture room a large number were pres ent and listened to the three inter esting papers professor mckibben outlined the work done in the fritz laboratory by the civil engineering depart ment during the last four years in testing full-sized concrete columns the experiments having been con ducted largely as thesis work nearly one hundred concrete col umns have been tested in the 800 000-pound machine some of these columns were as long as 20 feet a size large enough to command at tention two types have been test ed plain concrete and reinforced concrete many of the latter con sisted of a concrete pillar surround ed by a spiral of steel wire the spi ral greatly increasing the carrying capacity of the concrete the effect of the spiral wrapping is shown by the fact that whereas ordinary con crete columns brer k under a load of 2,000 pounds per square inch the spirally reinforced columns stand 5,000 pounds per square inch be fore breaking additional tests are being planned for this year by mr m o fuller instructor of civil engineering who has charge of the details of all tests in the fritz laboratory l allen 16 presented his sum mer inspection report on the eighth street viaduct allentowix pa one of the most notable of the many large reinforced concrete via ducts which have been erected in the country is the south eighth st viaduct which crosses the valley of the little lehigh river between the main portion of the city of allen town pa and the twelfth ward formerly known as south allen town this viaduct carries the in terurban trains of the lehigh val ley transit co an interurban line running between philadelphia and allentown and is used also as a highway toll crossing the viaduct connects south eighth street in allentown to south ninth street in south al lentown and deviates only slightly from a straight line connecting the termini of these streets at the val ley it crosses a valley about 125 ft deep at its deepest part through which runs the small stream known as the little lehigh river and the tracks of two railroads as well as a number of city streets the viaduct inclusive of ap proaches is 2640 ft long the main part of which is made up of nine 120-ft clear span arches and eight 52^4 ft girder spans arched for ar chitectural effect the bridge exclu sive of approaches is 1950 ft long its greatest width is 56 ft the road way from curb to curb is the same width as a state road viz 32 feet the sidewalks are each 7 ft wide at every electric light pole which are 135 ft apart there is a bracket of 5 feet the roadway and side walks are carried by two end abut ments two center abutments and 16 intermediate piers which sup port the 9 arches of 120 feet span continued on third page last evening at 6.43 o'clock when quarterback chenoweth arrived at the union station south bethle hem a large number of the stu
