to mr charles haefner the special is expected to leave bellefonte immediately after the game and to reach south bethle hem about twelve o'clock mid night continued on fourth page mr s j thomas of biology de partment has written two treatises on subject copper sulphate one half part of copper sulphate to million parts of water every day mr stanley judson thomas of the department of biology at le high university has recently writ ten two treatises on the use of copper sulphate in the purifica tion of swimming pools the first article which appeared in the journal of industrial and engi neering chemistry , in june 1915 was written to show the advantages that copper sulphate has over other disinfectants particularly chloride of lime the following is reprinted from the journal of the american medi cal association under the heading ' ' the practical use of copper sul phate in swimming pools ' ' ' ' since the publication of a paper on the use of copper sulphate in the purification of swimming pools in the journal of industrial and engineering chemistry and the editorial comment in the jour nal i have received many inquiries from physicians who are interested in the practical side of this subject a the first paper was primarily an attempt to show by scientific rea soning and fact the advantages of copper sulphate as a disinfectant in pools no attempt was made to describe the actual method of using it that is the method of charging the water the amount of disinfect ant to use frequency of applica tion and practical workings of the system in this paper an attempt will be made to give minute direc tions for the use of copper sulphate by a person in charge of a pool of course it must be under stood that no means of purification is of itself sufficient when the ordi nary laws of sanitation are not obeyed moreover the efficacy of a disinfectant depends to a greater or less degree on the chemical con tents of the water used in the pool and no definite amount of the disin fectant can be recommended with the statement ' this will make your pool water pure if possible fre quent bacteriologic analyses should be made at least during the first week or two of the treatment this will show better than any other means whether or not the proper amount of the disinfectant is being used the first requisite in thesanitary management of a swimming pool is the proper cleansing of the bathers before they enter the pool a thor ough shower bath with warm water and soap should always precede the plunge when it is possible as in the case of y m c a school or college pools no clothing whatever should be allowed in the case of public schools girls pools y w c a pools etc in which this pro vision cannot be carried out bath ing suits of light colored materials should be insisted on and these should be washed in disinfecting solutions at frequent intervals ! lastly and this is of prime impor tance no person should be allowed in the pool who knowingly is suffer ing from a communicable disease this means that a physician should have at least a general supervision over every swimming pool that these general precautions \ however do not destroy the danger the brown
