traditional score no b & w firsts e schaub and smith excel s & c president first defeat robert a harrier known to all his friends as bob has blazed a trail of fame and hon or at lehigh ever since he came here from wisconsin coming from lacrosse high school he entered lehigh in the fall of 1923 and his popularity was attested to by the fact that he was elected vice-president of freshman class he had charge the brown and white tank men successfully defended their honor against lafayette in a dual swimming meet last sat urday afternoon at taylor pool in which several close races were contested and some fairly good times were recorded it was the first appearance of the lehigh swimmers at home and the only varsity sport held at home on that day resulting in a very large attendance at this contest of the two rivals of the seven events on the card lehigh captured five and placed many seconds giving a score of 39 to 23 over coach miller's proteges in the final tally lafayette was handi capped in the relay by the ab sence of johns who would have bettered their chances for win ning this event lehigh was noticeably deficient in the back and breast strokes although first and second places were taken in the latter event hayes was unable to dive for the brown and white because of an attack of pleurisy which suddenly developed after the displacing smth at forward by h hesse when the captain fi nally did get into action how ever he played a leading part in the attack of the brown and white aggregation next to e schaub smith was high-scorer for lehigh tallying seven points besides accounting for eight points the greatest num ber scored by any player on ei ther team e schaub played a strong all-around game draper and mills were the cadet heroes of the afternoon although used as substitutes in the second period these two players clinched the victory by their accurate shooting in the closing minutes of the game draper led his teammate in scoring by netting three field nort took hayes place in the diving event and both he and hobbs displayed excel lent form hobbs taking first place with 102 points by some very difficult but exceedingly well-performed dives van nort ran second in this event winning over biles of lafayette by a close margin webbe al though swimming all over the pool to compete his 440 yards succeeded in pulling into first place and maintained the lead throughout the entire event the summaries 200 yard relay won by le high raleigh ellis hertzler wynn ; lafayette brun cod dington yates bew second time 1:48 3-5 continued on page four fancy dives won by hobbs lehigh van nort lehigh sec ond biles lafayette third the lehigh varsity basket ball team encountered its fifth successive defeat of the season on saturday afternoon when a none-too-strong army quintet earned a 24-22 verdict in the closing minutes of the fray which was played on the west point floor the game altho close at all times was not par ticularly well played it pro vided plenty of excitement for the spectators and the second half was replete with thrills close guarding prevailed in the first half and kept the score low the opposing teams were deadlocked four times when the period ended the score board showed no advantage reading 8-8 coach geary made one change in his starting line-up an entirely different combin ation of cadets played the sec ond half and proved more established turner swimming for blair was the individual star of the meet establishing new records in the 40 and 220 yard free style and swimming anchor rnfin on the record-breaking re lay team mccarthy was the only yearling to place in more than one event ; second place in the 40 yard free-style and third in the 100 yard free-style were his contributions to the brown and white score summary has succumbed to the attack of the tiger by a one-point margin lehigh had run up a score of 13 to 3 at the end of the 145 pound bout but was destined to stay scoreless after that time as the princeton grap plers scored three times twice by time decisions and once by a fall eddie mcgovern wrestling in his first intercollegiate meet for lehigh had a good tussle with macrea of princeton but succeeded in scoring a fall with a half nelson and body hold in 5 minutes and 15 seconds captain jimmy reed then increased the brown and white lead to ten points by scoring an easy fall over alexander in 2 mr wallace clark consulting industrial engin eer of new york lectured in the geology lecture room on management engineering and gantt methods the lecture was delivered to the class in industrial management but it was open to all others who were interested in the subject the lecture was illustrated by slides showing the charts used in the gantt method many of the slides were charts of plants in other countries of the world that have adopted this method the method originated by frederick w taylor and de veloped by henry l gantt has become universal in the last few years during the last thee of four years the fin ancial side of industry has adopted budget mehods and fi nancing systems the main point is the co-ordination of purchases production sales prices low inventory reduc tion and simplification of oper ations and the reduction of the number of times the materials are handled industrial man agement is beginning to stan dardize salesmanship and here the psychologists can assist pro ducers when these uniform manufacturing methods are used throughout industry they aid as a basis of logical com parison between various pro ducers and greatly add to effi cient manufacture saturday afternoon from three-thirty till six-thirty the class of 1930 gave a tea dance in drown hall it was the first social function the fresh men have had and it proved to be a big success pretty and hot tunes of syncopation by the lehigh mountaineers were heard for three short hours in the beautifully decorated sec ond floor of drown hall the dance was attended by about two hundred and fifty people in all twenty-four girls were invited from bish opthorpe manor and their ar rival caused the dance to gain in entertainment everybody present had a most enjoyable afternoon which gave encour agement to the freshmen in their first social enterprise the splendid support which was given by the whole student body will be a factor in giving the frosh confidence to hold anoth er similar affair robert a harrier the sophomore cabinet to pro mate social functions on the campus which were very few at that time of the banquet season during his first year and was a lead er in virtually every branch of class activity he was elected president of the class in his sophomore year and together with fred trafford organized from that time on bob has engaged in so many activi ties that it would be impossible to recount each one in detail his versatility is shown by the fact that his honors include practically every type of activ ity at lehigh he has been an outstanding figure on the cam pus since he first came here and is by far one of the most popular men in his class bob's personality has made many friends for him while at le high and this coupled with hard work has tended to make him pennell as an etcher and illustrator prof harry fretz of the geology depart ment has loaned four of his pennell etchings for this pur pose all of prof fretz's etch ings have to do with engineer ing projects or with industry two small volumes about pen nell's work are also loans of prof fretz one of the vol umes is made up of reproduc tions of the lithographs made by pennell of the great engin eering feat of building the panama canal the other lit tle volume is a catalogue of the magnificent collection of whis tler's etchings given by mr and mrs pennell to the library of congress the four original etchings loaned by prof fretz are — a view of the philadel phia broad street station called trains that come and trains that go a construction job called building the bridge at hell gate another called building a power house and the fourth called on the way to bessemer the library owns an original etching by pennell called the harbor at philadelphia be sides these five etchings are books illustrated by pennell with lithographs and etchings either owned by the library or loaned by emil gelhaar and continued on page four a new laboratory manual on electricity magnetism and light has been completed by professors martin and palmer of the physics department and will be released from the press some time this week this book will be used by all those taking elementary physics which includes all freshmen en gineers and some of the arts students this book is not to be con fused with the laboratory man ual on mechanics heat and sound by professor martin which was used last term in freshmen physics professor karbler of the physics department who has been on leave of absence dur ing the last term will return in february he has been com pleting his course for a ph d degree at the university of cinncinatti the baseball schedule fol lows baseball team to play three games on south ern tour few home meets the board of control of ath letics approved the schedule of spring sports this past week and the arrangements for ja crosse baseball and track teams are now complete prac tically no new colleges are to be met but rather the schedules include those institutions that have previously been met by brown and white teams one of the features of the new ros ter is an extensive vacation trip for the baseball team at which time the nine will meet navy university of maryland and
