freshmen defeat sophomores result unexpected lafayette outplayed the brown and white with all the breaks to their ad vantage the downfall of the brown and white warriors came as a complete surprise to the crowd of 15,000 per sons who gathered on taylor field to witness the annual contest be tween lehigh and lafayette a comparison of the season's record for each team led both lehigh and lafayette rooters to give the ad vantage to the brown and white eleven and the complete upset of their calculations was evidence of lehigh s reversed form with the advantage of winning the toss captain luhr chose to de fend the west goal with a strong wind to his back immediately lafayette gained ground on their punts weldon averaging 50 yards while cahall could not cope with the wind and seldom was able to get more than 15 to 25 yards decidedly it was lafayette's lucky day the first two scores re sulted directly from lehigh s two costly fumbles twice under the shadow of their own goal weldon s punts were blocked and in each case a lafayette player was on hand to fall on the ball it was almost uncanny the way the players on the maroon and white eleven followed the ball lafayette made 11 first dowois to lehigh s 9 in 28 attempts the maroon and white made good 10 forward passes lehigh succeeded with only three out of 11 tries in penalties lehigh suffered a total loss of 45 yards as compared with lafayette's loss of five yards ex cluding punts and kick-offs run back lafayette gained a total or 270 yards and lehigh 183 yards the lehigh line was almost in vincible and very few gains were made through it by lafayette of the hitter's total of 270 yards 157 yards were gained by means of the forward pass in the last period in particular weldon for lafayette was responsible for some beautiful passes the majority of his heaves were good for 20 yards or over and several of them for more than 30 yards gifts by alumni and trustees make this possible games shows need of more seats
