first game of season was hotly contested score 35 to 31 crichton stars lehigh center scores twenty one times against opponents in the opening game of the season for both teams lehigh de feated moravian college at basket ball on the latter s floor on satur day by a score of 35 to 31 the game was closely contested and neither team was able to secure much of a lead at any time at the end of the first half the score stood 15 to 14 in favor of the brown and white quintet in the first part of the second period the moravians looked dangerous and managed to secure and hold the lead with but five minutes to play the le high team strengthened and forged ahead coach haring started the game for lehigh with a somewhat patched up team which put up a good fight but was not able to pre vent the scoring by the moravian forwards the half ended with five goals to the credit of the mora vian team and 1 but three for the brown and white moravian how ever committed 15 fouls to 10 for lehigh and the successful foul goals gave lehigh the lead the second half saw lehigh with practically a veteran team cap tain green replaced sanford at guard and brewster and dynan replaced thomas and kirkpatrick at forwards honors were about even until toward the end of the period when superior team work and more accurate shooting gave lehigh the lead which she was able to hold until the whistle blew in this period each side committed 14 fouls and moravian garnered one more foul goal than lehigh for a total of 9 points continued on fifth page will have seven acts a bow cry night school to feature the variety show to be given by the mustard and cheese society of lehigh university at 7.30 p m on friday night december 17 in the lehigh orpheum theatre promises to be a very fine show the program has not been ar ranged yet as to the order in which the acts will come so can not be printed in this issue it will con sist of seven good acts and a moving picture the picture is to start at seven thirty sharp the other acts are an original play by w volkhardt 16 entitled the college widow a musical act a sketch called a frat initiation a monologue an act entitled madam ?," some sleight of hand and deep magic in the act called magic and mr e and last but not least will be a very fine comedy act called a bowery night school the cast for this sketch is : teacher l a dawson school director .. . b e ostrom alderman p s hanway pupils : l f keady a w cheno weth l e g-rumbach a yap and a s rosenstein visitors n b pons w c cahall and h s carleson this last act is a whole show in itself as the cast is as perfect as could be selected the ready wit and talent for acting with which each seems to be overflowing makes this act an act of a thousand laughs and smiles this does not mean that the other acts are not good for each one is exceptionally good but the last act is in a class by itself when it comes to humor and good acting there will be rehearsals of the different acts almost every day this week the final dress rehearsal will be held on friday afternoon as the seating capacity of the theatre is limited it is advisable to get your seats as early as possible tickets are on sale at the ticket office of the lehigh orpheum or may be had from any member of the mustard and cheese society tickets 50c 75c and 1.00 harrisburg-lehigh club r s perry 88 on preparedness the five engineering societies will hold a joint december meeting in place of the usual individual monthly meeting of each society this meeting will take place next wednesday evening at 7 o'clock in drown hall this early hour of starting will enable all those present to witness the basketball game which is scheduled for the same evening dr drinker has shown a keen interest in the new venture on the part of the engineering societies and has acted in conjunction with the entertainment committee he has obtained as the speaker of the evening mr r s perry 88 president of the alumni associa tion of the university mr perry is also president of harrison brothers and company paint manufacturers of philadelphia the subject of mr perry's ad dress will be ' ' the function of en gineering and industrial activi ties as coefficients of prepared ness ' ' particularly from the chemi cal standpoint the speaker is peculiarly fitted to present an ad dress on this subject by george h streaker of phila delphia must raise moral standards united states to lead as it raises standards so will the world's raise be on guard a good sized audience attended the weekly y m c a meeting held in drown hall sunday even ing and heard george h streaker of philadelphia speak besides mr streaker's address james sourber 19 rendered two vocal solos accompanied by jacob reit zel 16 mr fry read a portion of the scripture and made several announcements mr streaker's theme was i know that my redeemer liveth for i have lived with him ' ' he showed how one must live a good clean life in order to be a son of god , the speaker started off by telling of a little incident which happened while he was out at dinner one evening he happened to be din ing with a man who had two daugh ters remarking to one on what he should say to a group of lehigh students he asked her what he ought to tell them the girl an swered tell them to learn to dance and dance well ; the students of university of pennsylvania are very poor as mr streaker thought this theme rather inappro priate he spoke on the theme as given his speech follows in part : life is becoming more and more complex look at the bethle hem steel works working seven days a week and three shifts a day look at the trouble one has to cross broadway life is complex and is a mystery one of the ancient philosophers said there are two great things one is the heavens on a starry night and the other is greater than that — the strange in ner self ' go out and learn all about the world but you will always come back to god no matter how much you study of any subject you al ways come up against a board fence sooner or later we stand in awe of the subject the same is true with the study of the gospel we stand in awe of it our ideals must be high if we do not hold to our high ideals we drift away from god we must have high standards and live up to them ' ' i was coming up the new york harbor one night it was a mar velous picture the tall buildings loomed up and i was struck by the awe of the seene — all the work of man but above all that was the work of god i went to a sunday school in philadelphia one easter sunday a little child came running out with tears streaming down her cheeks she had a toothache we found that a tooth had been lost and a new one had taken its place the same thing happens to the body the old body passes away but the soul either lives with god and eter nity or passes out as many as re ceive god's ideas will be saved there are today thirteen so called christian nations at war with one another this shows that christianity is growing but slowly this nation will grow only in the measure that the younger genera tion obey the will of god take the standard today and raise it higher the harrisburg men of lehigh held a meeting last friday evening in taylor hall for the purpose of forming a harrisburg lehigh club about a dozen men were present and they discussed plans for organization and work the immediate reason for an or ganization meeting at this time was the approach of the christmas holidays during which time the men expect to accomplish some good work the idea is to collect funds by subscription from all the harrisburg lehigh alumni that can be located the associated charities in harrisburg will then be consulted and the names of de serving poor families obtained it is hoped that by persistent efforts of the harrisburg undergraduates enough money will be collected to relieve the poverty of several fami lies this plan has been in operation at state college where the harris burg men do a considerable amount of charitable work every christ mas berks county club there will be a meeting of the berks county club tomorrow af ternoon at one o'clock in drown hall leads haverford's second team in pennsylvania league game score 5 to 0 brown and white showed marked improvement in every department the brown and white soccer team had little trouble in defeating haverford seconds last saturday on taylor field by the score of 5 goals to 0 two important fac tors in the victory were an im provement in goal shooting and of the team-work to a higher standard during the greater part of the game the ball was in haverford's territory lehigh's goal was threat ened but once in the first half and twice during the second the brown and white made the first of her goals at the end of the first ten minutes of play after missing several chances lehigh rapidly by means of long passes worked the ball in front of haver ford's goal where lewis shot the ball past goal-keeper greene for the first tally haverford's nearest approach to lehigh's goal in this half followed when by advancing the ball with a rush they came within striking distance goalkeeper rau was on the alert seized the ball and booted it for 50 yards two more tallies were made for lehigh this half one by capt hen derson and one by lv in quick suc cession lu's goal was a pretty one by skillful foot work he worked the ball through a group of opponents and whizzed the ball into the net throughout the game lu's work was steady the second half showed haver ford at its best although they lacked the punch at the critical moments being unable to break lehigh's defense when near goal just after the opening of the second period tizard received a badly wrenched knee which will keep him out of the game in definitely about the middle of the latter period henderson and clement worked the ball in front of haverford's goal where hen derson drawing greene out whizzed one between the posts for lehigh's fourth tally one more goal the prettiest of the game was made before the final whistle a series of passes from lewis to clement to lv to lewis enabled the latter to make the final score of the game for haverford goodhue and barry excelled while barclay lewis koplin and henderson played best for lehigh the line-up : haverford positions lehigh greene g rau weston r f . b koplin goodhue 1 f b and the women in charge of the young ladies of the moravian college for women there is no compensa tion attached to this work and the glory of teaching is the only re ward the lehigh evening school teachers however feel amply re paid for their efforts after the de lightful reception tendered to them on saturday evening by the teachers in the foreigner's classes the domestic science students and the seniors of the moravian col lege for women on entering the chapel of the seminary where the reception or conference as it was called was held each lehigh student was given a slip of paper on which there was an unfinished quotation from shakespeare the remainder of this quotation was in the hands of some lady of the seminary and in this way partners were chosen for the evening and everyone be came acquainted professor hughes made the opening address telling of the pur pose of the evening schools and the reason for bringing the teachers of the two schools together so as to compare notes he then intro duced dr de schweinitz dr de schweinitz spoke on ' ' the relations with our foreign friends he related several stories most of them being per sonal experiences showing the trusting nature of the average foreigner and also the adverse con ditions under which he comes to this country he told how despite these handicaps they usually man age to make a living and as a rule own their homes after a few years residence in this country the next number was a piano solo by miss mary jefferson as sisted by miss marguerite hicks refreshments were served by the domestic science students of the school at this time professor hughes distributed some printed sheets on which there was a shakespearean love story blanks were left in the story to be filled in with names of shakes pearean works the person having the perfect solution receiving a prize the prizes were awarded by mr fry y m c a secretary miss dorothy doane receiving the first prize and mr r t lerch 16 second prize the low honors going to miss coyle and mr j a framp ton 19 miss read then rendered a so prano solo accompanied by miss graither after which miss mar guerite hicks played first the le high alma mater and then the mo ravian college alma mater a few more college songs were sung and then the conference ended too much credit cannot be given to dr and mrs clewell and pro fessor and mrs hughes for ar ranging the very entertaining pro gram some of the other names appearing as patrons and patron esses on the program were mr and mrs h r reiter miss helena hoch miss wunderling miss read miss gaither mr and mrs benner
