lecturer has gained big reputation shown by press comments for the first y m c a meeting of 1916 which will be held next sunday evening at 6.15 in drown hall an unusually attractive pro gram has been arranged madame jutta bell-ranske of new york city the noted scandi navian lecturer whose books and lectures have won her european recognition will be the speaker of the evening madame bell-ranske will speak on the subject the man that failed which is based on peer gynt the story of a man whose thoughts dealt only on material things it is the unanimous opinion of critics that she is one of the really talented woman artists of the day an idea of the reputation she has gained and the wonderful impres sion she has made may be gathered from several press comments taken at random from a long list notice issued by arcadia on the christmas vacation trip the basketball team was able to win but a single game crescent a c of brooklyn loyola college of baltimore westinghouse club of wilkinsburg and wittenberg col lege of springfield ohio were met and in each case the lehigh quin tet was forced to bow to defeat marietta college was probably the strongest team that was met and yet the south bethlehem visitors wrested victory by but a single point the first game was played on december 28 in brooklyn when the brown and white was defeated by the crescent a c by a score of 28 to 16 the score indicates that the crescent team won the game through superior shooting and no apologies can be offered it is true that crichton was not up to his usual form in foul shooting but he alone could not nearness of mid year examinations the attention of the student body is called to the fact that the strong support of the honor system is absolutely essen tial and each student should re member his responsibility for its enforcement these facts should be observed : ' ' the pledge should be written at the end of the examination and not at the beginning should there be any cases of breach of the system found by any student or member of the teaching force he is required to make a charge in writing giving the name of the violator and as detailed ex planation of the conditions as pos sible this charge properly signed should be sent to the ar cadia drown hall at the earliest possible time for it is necessary that all charges be submitted in writing all communications will be confidential next game with army during the holidays a rare col leetior oj books was presented to the university library by pro fessor barry macnutt of the physics department the books are from the library of colonel ira macnutt of the united states army father of professor mac nutt and comprise about two hun dred volumes relating entirely to military topics there are several books on military engineering dealing with problems which the army engineer meets other volumes treat on field fortifications for infantry permanent fortifica tions and also coast defense there are about twenty bound volumes of general orders of the united states army covering a period of several years some books of law including a digest of the united states military law are in the collection manuals for nearly every phase of military life are included such as artillerist manual and quar termaster's manual together with several small books on the use of small arms and the use of rifles this collection has not as yet been completely catalogued but any of the books may be obtained by permission of the librarian another collection of books 1 was received on wednesday from the macmilian company these are new books sent for inspection they are kept for a while the de sirable books purchased and the remainder are returned the list is as follows radium x-rays and the living cell colwell and russ operation of the tournament opened last wednesday afternoon when the alpha tan omega team won tw y o out of three games from chi phi and psi upsilon defeated delta phi in all three games seventeen of the fraternities have entered the tournament two more than last year thus showing that much interest is taken in the competition the schedule calls for one hun dred and thirty-six matches all of which must be rolled on the drown hall alleys matches will be rolled monday thursday and fri day evenings and wednesday and saturday afternoons the rules governing the tourna ment are as follows 1 each team shall consist of four men 2 all matches shall be bowled on or before scheduled date 3 any team claiming a forfeited game shall notify a member of the committee not later than two days after date of match in question 4 the entry fee of three dollars shall be due and payable to the treasurer before the first match is rolled 5 regular bowling rates shall be paid by each team and pin boys shall be paid 20 cents per match 6 all sliding over the foul-line shall be penalized by losing of the ball 7 all score sheets must be in the hands of the secretary not later than one week after the match is bowled the the january meeting of the civil engineering society will be held friday night january 14 wed nesday morning january 12 at 11 o'clock mr h j jackson 08 assistant engineer of the u s geological survey will address the civil engineering students upon ' ' some phases of the stream gaug ing work of the it s geological survey this talk will be illus trated foreign visitor by the score of three goals to two lehigh's soccer team defeated the second team from university of pennsylvania leaders in the pennsylvania intercollegiate soccer league this victory enabled le high to tie the philadelphians for first place and makes it necessary for another game to decide the champions ideal soccer weather prevailed but the field was much too soft capt neilson of pennsylvania won the toss and had the advantage of both sun and wind starting the game with a rush his men through their vigorous attack produced two tries at goal byrne having both but they went wide lehigh now advanced the ball into perm's territory lewis on a pass from lv made a hard try and just grazed the net in the vigorous attack of perm who now recovered byrne was again much in evi dence with his vicious drives goal ! keeper rau made a pretty save of one of his tries but another got past him giving perm its first score at this point lehigh took a brace and led the attack during the remainder of the game perm made one more try for a goal and lehigh's halfbacks dribbled the ball up the field lewis did fine work then and passed to clement who making the goal evened the score the same combination proved successful a few minutes later when clement running in drove a fast shot past madeira this ended the scoring for the first period although perm had several tries lewis too had a clear field but an offside play inter fered and madeira for perm made a pretty save captain henderson had four unsuccessful tries and four corner kicks proved worthless for lehigh evenly matched playing featured the second half lehigh scored when lewis made the goal after henderson missed an easy one near the end of the game morrison offended within the penalty area and byrne was given a free kick goalkeeper rau stopped the drive but dropped the ball and bryne rushing in kicked it into the net perm tried hard to even up the score but lehigh's defense tight ened and the good work of coffin and koplin saved possible goals
