lehigh met a rejuvenated army basketball team at west point on the college lecture on friday was held in the palace theatre on lehigh exhibited good form during this period was fast play the next two games on lehigh s basketball schedule are among the more important ones of the season tomorrow evening the brown and white plays muhlenberg on the taylor gym floor and on satur day meets lafayette these games have always drawn crowds and to morrow's game is of particular in terest as muhlenberg defeated le high last year by the close score of 25-23 muhlenberg started early this season and by this time has reached her full stride they have a strong team on the floor and one that has shown up well so far the last game the allentonians played was with the gettysburg five and the latter defeated muhlenberg 51 34 it is well known however that gettysburg is strong in basketball several members of the football eleven are now playing on the muhlenberg team among whom are ritter who played left tackle and gaston who was right end lehigh has not made such a good showing so far this year having been defeated six times to three vic tories however tomorrow's game will tell probable line-up : lehigh positions muhlenberg kirkpatrick f everett brewster f fitzgerald crichton c ritter ketcham g gaston green g witmer stewart e h meglathery presi dent of the south bethlehem bor ough council george r booth borough solicitor of bethlehem george fonda superintendent of the department of safety and welfare bethlehem steel com pany charles h rebert justice of peace northampton heights and christian ammann one of the group of men who were recently made citizens d t wynne 16 president of the university y m c a gave a short reading prof stewart addressed the men on the duties and responsibility of citizenship urging them to take an active interest in the gov ernment of the country he re marked that too many of our native americans are bored they don't take any interest in politics he urged the men to take an interest in the schools and to contribute all they could to make the schools better for in that way they might be able to give their children the continued on second page discussion groups individual bowling tournament recently there has been a great deal of agitation around the uni versity regarding an individual bowling tournament the move ment has crystallized in the ap pointment of a committee which is at work to formulate plans the idea is to hold tournaments in both ten pins and duck pins the pri mary object being to get a line on the material in college matches have been arranged with several local teams and it is hoped that a sufficient number of men will enter this tournament to en able a good university team to be chosen anyone wishing to enter both or either of these tournaments will hand his name to either of the fol lowing men m o andrews e c hummel n b pons or n m roy all definite arrangements will be made and the tournament started immediately after examinations saturday and went down to defeat by a score of 24 to 17 the army five had oliphant of football fame in their line-up for the first time this season and they showed the best form of the year incidentally it was oliphant who largely con tributed to the defeat of the brown and white quintet he alone had 10 of his team's total of 24 points with three field goals to his credit and 4 goals from fouls in addition to oliphant c gerhardt and bay ler were mostly in the limelight for the cadets lehigh exhibited the best form of the game during the first half closely guarding the army for wards and playing a remarkably fast game the brown and white team held the cadets and finished the period with the score a tie at ten all shortly after the begin ning of the second half the score was again tied at 12 to 12 here the army defense tightened and allowed lehigh but five more points in the same time the soldier forwards doubled their score and when a college meeting in packer hall on friday january 14 at 11 o'clock assistant mana ger of football will be elected the candidates are f a gilroy r c alden w t staats the january meeting of the civil engineering society will be held friday evening january 14 at 8 p m in the physics lecture room mr c w blazer 07 hydraulic engineer and recently head of the allentown real estate assessment system will talk on the methods used in the real estate valuation of the city of allentown this valua tion of real estate is closely allied to the present valuation of the rail roads of this country by the gov ernments r w sheckells 1 , 16 will read a paper on the baltimore filtration plant there will be a feed these pictures were shown by the united states steel corpora tion at the san francisco exhibi tion and received the gold medal award third street so as to facilitate the presenting of the motion pictures accompanying the lecture which were on the manufacture of na tional tubing dr richards introduced the speaker mr c f rowland a graduate of cornell and now in the metallurgy department of the national tube company the speaker first called attention to two leading facts which were brought out in the pictures first the uniformity in the finished prod uct as the national tube company owns and operates its own ore mines and steel mills second the great amount of expensive and gi gantic machinery involved a short history of pipe was then given from the use of bamboo in the ancient times then the use of the pottery tube lead pipe was probably used in roman times as some specimens have been found among the ruins of herculaneum and in the old city of bombay an other use for tubing was gun bar rels and cannon these were first made of bronze but a cheaper ma terial had to be found so iron was used at first sheet metal was bent and then welded in 1812 osborne an englishman invented a pipe welding machine about this time lighting by gas came into use and increased the demand for pipe in 1825 whitehouse another english man invented butt welding there was an ever-increasing demand for tubing for use as boiler tubes gas pipes etc the first firms using the butt welding process started up be tween 1812 and 1830 in 1849 the pascal iron works were started on july 1 1847 j j wolworth went to england and inspected the tube mills there he brought back plans for a tube mill and on no vember 3 1849 the first tubes were the national tube company makes both lap and butt welded pipe as some engineers specify one and some the other when iron pipe was first made the sizes ranged from one inch to three inches in 1913 the national tube company manufactured 1 750,000 tons of steel tubing rang ing in sizes from one-eighth inch to thirty inches the motion pictures were then shown the first film began by showing the method of prospecting for ore by drilling then the ' ' quartering samples of ore preparatory to analysis were shown assumingthat examination proves the ore to be desirable steam shovels are brought and the barren upper strata is stripped uncovering the ore de posits this method of mining shown is called the open cut by which method the larger portion of iron ore is mined in minnesota iron ore somewhat resembles dark red soil or iron rust averaging continued on second page the athletic committee of le high university held its monthly meeting last thursday according to the rule adopted in 1914 the nominees for the football manager ship were sent before the committee and examined as to their efficiency and ability none of the three who are alden staats and gilroy were eliminated another matter that was dis cussed to some extent was that con cerning a new football coach up on the expiration of tom keady's coaching contract last fall an ad ditional one for three years more was offered and as yet no accept ance has been forthcoming no definite action was taken however regarding the matter the lehigh y m c a opened the year of 1916 in the associa tion's history auspiciously last sunday night when a large crowd including the women's club of the bethlehems heard madame jutta bell-ranske of new york city speak oru the subject the man that failed about two hundred people were present and the meeting was one of the most successful ever conducted by the y m c a harold i fair led the meeting special music was rendered by e brodstein 16 and l s lobach of bethlehem mr brodstein played hajnalka by charles roberts on the violin with rare skill and technique and was ably accompanied by mr lobach for an encore beethoven's minuett in g was given madame bell-rauske is a speaker of wonderful ability and magnetic personality her earnestness is ap parent and her delivery that of a finished artist the sp eaker s topic the man that failed is based on the story of peer gynt by ibsen the speaker began by mention ing the great restlessness that is in the world at the present time there will be in time a great spiritual revolution madame bell eanske then sketched in short ibsen's career ibsen developed through ro mantic periods his country turned on him he failed and almost starved in 1860 he wrote to his king begging him for a pen sion he wanted this money to publish his works ibsen was not granted the pension and he went to rome where he published his f amjous story of peer gynt madame bell-ranske then de scribed briefly the story of peer gynt peer gynt starts out in life with a false conception of it his mother has filled him with fairy tales when he is young and makes him believe that the greatest thing he could become is an emperor ac cordingly his main ambition is to become king peer gynt grows up marries and treats his wife brutally he leaves her and becomes a man who lives a life of sin and sensuality he tries to wed the daughter of an emperor not for love but for the kingdom and crown that goes with it her father says that he will give peer his daughter if he can answer the question am i true to myself after many trials peer could not answer the question and he prays for his mother's aid continued on second page . finally peer goes into the moun tain and builds himself a hut and prays for a little girl whom he knew at one time in his life and loved she comes but after she ar rives peer g-ynt remembers all his sensuality and he goes out into the great world he gets money by selling slaves but continues to
