muhlenberg in basketball on wednesday evening in taylor gymnasium and thereby took revenge for last year's defeat at the hands of the allentown col legians the score was 38 to 16 which indicates pretty well the nature of the drubbing adminis tered by the brown and white quintet at no time during the game was muhlenberg even danger ous for lehigh started off by scoring three goals from the field and one foul goal before muhlen berg could tally this lead was soon increased and muhlenberg was not able to come as close again in the first period lehigh clearly got the jump on the visitors seem ingly able to score at will the le high team also put up a remark able defensive game muhlenberg s score for the first period resulted almost entirely from foul goals and gaston s lone field goal was the only result of the muhlenberg at tack the first half ended with the score standing at 24 to 9 in favor of the university team lehigh slowed up slightly in the second half but when witmer of muhlenberg made the first score of the period the brown and white players tightened ketcham soon followed with a basket and green then quickly tallied twice the scoring then alternated for the re final score stood at 38 to 16 in le high's favor lehigh was the greatest offender in the number of fouls committed having 15 in all while muhlenberg had but 7 it was owing to these fouls too that muhlenberg scored as she did for of the total of 16 points gathered by muhlenberg gaston made 10 from foul goals continued on fifth page for lehigh crichton was high scorer with 11 points to his credit muhlenberg s individual scoring honors go to gaston who made 14 of his team's total of 16 points lehigh vs nativity soccer game tomorrow the civil engineering society will hold its january meeting to night in the physics lecture room at 8 o'clock the meeting will be addressed by two speakers mr c w blazer 07 and r w sheckells r w sheckells will read a paper on the , baltimore filteration plant of which subject he is well informed the usual eats will follow the meeting mr blazer will talk on real estate valuation he was re cently connected with the late as sessment of property values in allentown having charge of the work there he will speak of the methods used in that system for the determination of land values and thus taxes at present mr blazer is a hydraulic engineer in the allentown water works while at lehigh he was a member of both the football and baseball teams candidates for relay team report tomorrow the wrestling room of taylor gym will be the scene of the biggest novice meet in lehigh athletics when the annual sweater contest is pulled off there today and tomor row the preliminary bouts will come off this afternoon at 4.00 p m followed by the finals tomorrow afternoon at 2.30 p m this meet as previously announced is purely a novice one no man who has won his letter or a sweater in previ ous years is allowed to compete the object of such a meet is ob vious namely to get a line on the material and to stimulate greater interest in the sport as far as the 175-pound and heavyweight classes are concerned the idea has not been productive of results no bouts will be held in these weights owing to lack of material coach billy sheridan is particularly desirous of filling these positions since they are the two weak spots on the team on the outlook for the season he has the following to say : with kirkhuff martin thom as and sawtelle as a nucleus i am confident that i can give lehigh a winning team hicks and jenness competing for 135-pound class hon ors leave no cause for worry about that class we do need men for the 175-pound and heavyweight classes there is an excellent chance to win the championship in these classes this year such as will not occur again in four years ' ' football men could give me the highest kind of assistance by com ing out for these classes they are practically the only source of heavyweight material at hand le high has been wrestling in a high class and has been handicapped in the past by the small amount of material from which a coach could chose our opponents all have the advantage of being able to pick a team from a hundred or more candidates this means an extra effort on the part of lehigh to travel in their class this idea of football men entering the wrestling game is one that has the approval of the football coaches at all big colleges cornell princeton penn sylvania all sanction the plan it is felt that this training makes a man less liable to injury in a foot ball game if the members of the football team will lend me their co-opera tion i will give lehigh a wrestling team developed in every depart ment i will give lehigh a team of which she can well feel proud and which will make the strongest bid for intercollegiate champion ship in lehigh history however i must have the co-operation of the student body let me repeat that the football men can render me valuable assistance in the heavy weight classes university dance a meeting of the chemical so ciety was held last night at the home of dr drinker prof j w richards of the department of metallurgy spoke on nitric acid from the air as a factor in pre paredness for war philip drinker 17 read an interesting paper dealing with the subject alchemy and j b schwoyer 17 spoke on photographic chemistry ' ' prof richards dealt with the situation of the united states 1 in regard to the supply of nitric acid obtainable he said that there is not much use of having guns and ships without nitric acid for with out nitric acid no ammunition can be made there is not more than three months supply in the coun try and most of our supply of nitric acid comes from chile in the form of nitre we should have either a large supply in the country or have facilities for making it for during a war our supply from ch r e would soon be cut off during the present european war germany has had to supply her own ammunition and nitric acid in order to accomplish this the teutons have created a large industry which manufactures nitric acid from the air over half a million horsepower is used in the production of it the united states at this time has not a single nitric acid plant in operation prof richards ended his address by showing why the federal government should operate several of the nitric acid plants in order to be prepared for war drinker's paper follows in part chemistry from the earliest times was known as the hermetic art this term originated from a somewhat mythological character hermes
