harry edmonds lehigh c e 04 secretary of the metropolitan inter-collegiate association of new york city will speak at the next regular meeting of the y m c a on january 23 mr edmonds was y m c a secretary at lehigh after his graduation on january 30 at the regular meeting of the y m c a mr phillip a swartz travelling sec retary of the student volunteer movement of new york city will speak mr swartz has recently re turned from russia and will no doubt give an interesting talk on february 6 the rt rev ethelberttalbot will be the speaker at the y m c a meeting arrangements are being made to take the y m c a cabinet's pic ture within the next week the mountain at 2 o'clock in the morning there was no light and all you could hear was the grinding of the cogs soon we got up to the line where the firs were growing the trees started to get smaller and finally there was not even moss it looked now as if a big cart-load of stones had been dumped on the mountain after about two hours of riding the top was reached on the top was an observation tower and i was at the top as soon as i could get there all that i saw was a wide expanse of mountains and snow i had reached the highest point that i could and i realized the smallness of man many of you have studied astronomy and you realize the smallness of the earth in the uni verse if you let the earth be the size of a pea and the sun a ball two feet in diameter and placed them 225 feet apart they would be in the correct relation in order to place the nearest fixed star we would have to start and go south through the south pole and a good ways up the other side in the pa cific ocean i saw the statistics of an insurance company the other day and out of a hundred men taken at the age of twenty-five at the age of sixty-five thirty-six will be dead one rich four wealthy five supporting themselves and the other fifty-four will be dependent upon someone else deutscher verein attention of the members of the two lower classes is called to the vacancies on the burr board two freshmen and one sophomore will be elected to the board the com petition will begin immediately and will close late in february ma terial should be handed to e s johnston 16 the photograph of the y m c a cabinet will be taken at mccaa's studio tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock , , cabinet photograph i did not give all of my text at first it continues for thou hast made him man a little lower than the angels and hast crowned him with glory and honor we shall now consider the second part of my subject part god created man in his own image he gave man a soul this enables man to defy god the animals are nothing but machines ; they have no souls man is a trinity which is composed continued on second page lehigh s basketball team turns out to play one more game before the mid-year exams this battle will be with temple university which from all reports is sending a strong quintet the temple five early in the season barely lost to ursinus on the latter s floor while shortly afterwards ursinus lost the game with pennsylvania by two points the temple aggregation seems to be unlucky as they have lost the majority of the games this year but mostly every one was with a close score lafayette per haps won the only decisive victory over them while last saturday al bright won from temple in an ex tra five-minute period by the score of 32-31 as for lehigh it seems possible that the brown and white have at last felt the effects of the new coaching staff and have settled down to a steady winning pace the last two games point to this fact particularly last saturday's game with clarkson tech was won through the steady and accurate work of the home team throughout the game the results of the basketball team during the first term are given below and might serve as comparisons of lehigh s strength up to date they have played eleven games lost six won five and have eleven more points than their oppo the last meeting of thedeutscher verein for the first term will be held at the willow grove hotel freemansburg on wednesday evening january 19 the car leaves fourth and new streets at 6.30 p m an excellent program has been arranged to be preceded by the usual feed members will bring their song books after a few more announcements were made the meeting adjourned sophomore and junior class meet ings being held directly after the college meeting mr c j heskett of the alumi num cooking utensil company then gave a short talk and offered summer work to as many lehigh men as would apply he said that the average profit of the lehigh men who worked last summer was ninety-three cents per hour any one wishing to take up this work should see c h cope 16 ; h c sugden 16 or g e doan 19 manager e c hummel an nounced that the basketball game with lafayette had been postponed until some time in february p s hanway 17 proposed a new method for electing the stu dent representatives to the athletic committee with the present system the student part of the ath letic committee is entirely new every year and as the proceedings of the committee are kept more or less secret these new men are usu ally at a loss how to act on import ant questions at least one man ought to serve two years he could then by his experience help out the new members of the board han way then made a motion that the delegate from the junior class when elected should serve for two years and be the senior class dele gate in his second year of office this j~ule to go into effect beginning next fall the motion was laid on the table until next college meet ing e a clare 16 of the arcadia called the attention of the stu dent body to the honor system card signed at the beginning of the year he said that the man who seesi a violation of the honor system and does not report it is as guilty as the man who cheats and will be dealt with as severely if the case should come before the arcadia ager for next fall the three men alden gilroy and staats who had been picked by the team and had been passed on by the athletic committee in accordance with the ruling made last year were up for election alden was chosen for the position the fourth college meeting of the year was held on friday at eleven o'clock in packer hall the main purpose of this meeting was to elect an assistant football man of clarkson forward was a feature scored 21 of team's points should show the gentleness of spirit characterizing christianity in fastest game of season visi tors are defeated score 37 to 25 individual playing there was quite a little expecta tion aroused last fall after the football season closed as to what coach keady would do at the ex piration of his contract with le high which ended at that time all doubt is set at rest for three more years anyway for tom keady has at last signed up for three more years as a coach in football and baseball keady s alma mater dartmouth desired his services in football and he has had under con sideration for some time an offer from that institution last satur the regular weekly meeting of the y m c a was held on sunday evening at 6.15 p m in drown hall the speaker was mr edwin moore of philadelphia miss lois goettman of bishopthorpe manor favored with a piano solo mr moore's subject was responsibil ity mr moore said in part re sponsibility is a broad subject and is hard to define a teacher asked a boy what it meant he said i can not define it but i can give an illustration of it if one button is holding up a boy's trousers that button has responsibility ' i have divided the subject and shall speak on man's part in church work i shall speak on each of the four words when i consider the heavens the works of thy fingers ; the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained what is man that thou art mindful of him and the son of man that thou visit est him man is a small part of the universe many have seen the picture of charles dana gibson of a lady's estimate of man it shows a large lady holding a magnifying glass and through the glass one sees a small speck which is man last summer i ascended pike's peak i started from the foot of the civil engineering society held its january meeting friday night january 14 in the physics lecture room the meeting was addressed by mr c w blazer a member of the class of 1907 mr blazer talked on real es tate valuation ' ' he was recently connected with the late assessment of property values in allentown having had charge of the work there he spoke of the methods used in that system for the deter mination of land values and thus taxes at present mr blazer is a hydraulic engineer in the allen town water works while at le high he was a member of both the football and baseball teams mr blazer began his talk by an outline of the determinations of values of real estate and what properties in certain sections of cities are more valuable than others this was done only after a thorough research in land valua tions in other cities and in records of sales of one specific city continued on second page the value of land according to mr blazer is not what it sells for but is based on the income derived which has as a foundation the ownership of the property and the use to which it may be put the potential use is more important than the present use the selling price of property is not an actual value but is only an indication of value a public sale is the least of in by far the fastest basketball game seen on the local floor this season lehigh defeated the clark son tech five of potsdam new york last saturday afternoon the game was played after the wrestling bouts in the annual sweater contest were over this was clarkson s first appearance here and little was known of their ability * the first half of the game was very closely contested neither side obtaining a comfortable lead rey nolds of the tech five started off with a goal in the first minute of play and green and crichton soon followed with goals in the first ten minutes of play the brown and white team was slightly outplayed on account of the clever passing of tech.'s five but after this the le high quintet settled down and played brilliant ball in this half barclay the visitors star forward caged three difficult goals while green crichton dynan and brew ster each had two to their credit the score at the end of the first half stood 18 to 12 in favor of lehigh barclay started off the second half with two goals before the brown and white five had gotten fairly started in the first ten minutes of play tech scored ten points to lehigh s two owing to the spectacular goal shooting of barclay from this time on the clarkson five was outplayed in both shooting and passing in this half brewster s goal and foul shoot ing was the main factor in lehigh s scoring while the close guarding of ketcham and green held the visitors in check at the end of the game the score stood 37 to 25 with the brown and white in the lead the game for being so fast and closely contested was cleanly played by both sides only twenty fouls being called altogether le high being the greatest offender with twelve for lehigh brewster and dy nan scored the most points al though crichton and green both played stellar ball the teamwork as a whole showed marked improve ment over previous games this season for clarkson tech bar clay was the individual star scoring 21 of the 25 points for tech his playing and goal shooting was the best seen here this year the clever passing instead of the usual drib bling was another feature the line-up of the teams was as follows : lehigh positions . clarkson brewster f reynold dynan f barclay crichton c maley ketcham g west green g teahan goalsi : brewster 6 ;
