white star succumbs to illness captain 22 squad open meeting illustrated talk building now being designed lehr makes strong showing an occurrence that will be much mourned at lehigh is the death of john w storer for mer football star jack died at his home last saturday from tuberculosis after fighting bravely for his life for nine months while he was a stu dent at lehigh storer was one thursday night the physics building will be the scene of a joint meeting of the civil en gineering and electrical en gineering societies when the meeting convenes at eight o'clock the members will be ad dressed by mr n e funk of the philadelphia electric com pany who will speak on the subject of the conowingo dam if the expectations of the ex ecutives are fulfilled this meet ing will prove to be one of the largest and most successful of the current year and plans are being made for smokes and re freshments for a large audi ence the talk by mr funk will be illustrated and is the same one that he delivered dur ing december at the franklin institute the hydro-electric develop ment at conowingo has been in the process of construction for the past year and when com pleted will be one of the larg est developments of its kind in the east mr funk who is the chief engineer of the cono wingo project has a very thor ough knowledge of his subject and his talk is expected to be the best delivered before these societies this year required chapels are announced last friday night january 14th the scabbard and blade held its regular business meet ing in the armory president chacey presiding the main business of the evening consist ed of formulating plans for an open meeting it was decided to have the open meeting in the armory on thursday the 17th of february everybody in college will be invited and there will be a general exhibi tion of the work done by the r o t c unit at lehigh one of the scabbard and blade members will give a short talk on the operation and use of machine guns various weap ons will be on display with offi cers to give an explanation of their use a world war vet eran will be obtained to talk on some certain phase of the world war following the meeting refreshments will be served the meeting certainly sounds interesting and it ought to prove very successful it was suggested that charms be given to the members of the rifle team as a recognition of their services and also that charms and ribbons be awarded to the men in r o t c work who are most proficient and who have been the most useful in the past year ajournment followed and the next meeting was scheduled for february 10th taylor hall to give dance sat unhindered in its building the department of metallurgy and very likely the department of philosophy and psychology will have freedom in williams hall thus expanding the chemistry department to include the wm h chandler laboratory tak en in consideration with the improvements that have been brought about in coppee hall and in the new christmas-sau con hall these new changes will certainly effect a great step toward the betterment of the university campus as to when and where the new building will be erected there are no official plans but the mere fact that dr rich ard's dreams of a greater le high are being realized com pels all lehigh to unite in praising james ward packard james ward packard whose name is deeply carved in the pages of industrial history is a son of lehigh of the class graduating in 1884 he was born in warren ohio he was graduated with the degree of mechanical engineer and en joyed a rapid rise in promin ence in his field in 1899 he brought forth the first packard automobile since then his en terprises have been attended with great success by the erection of the new laboratory as dr richards has wisely said will contribute to the training of future generations and to the advancement of in dustry and mr packard by making the project a reality has accomplished one of his greatest achievements lehigh's varsity mat men in augurated the wrestling season successfully last saturday aft ernoon by defeating the strong new york athletic club grap plers by the score of 16-8 the meet was held in taylor gym nasium before a large audience when considering that the new york a c team had among its ranks a metropopitan cham pion and a new jersey state heavyweight champion the le high wrestlers showed up well for the first meet and should look forward to a very success ful season two falls and a decision were scored by the brown and white to one fall and a decision for the gotham team lehigh took the lead when captain jimmy reed intercol legiate 115-pound champion easily threw turner of the new york a c with a half nelson and body hold in five minutes and seven seconds in the 135-pound class borowsky wrestling his first varsity meet for lehigh experienced some difficulty in defeating caploy of new york but was awarded the decision after two extra per iods borowsky displayed some very fine wrestling and no doubt will be a regular on coach sheridan's team this year bill heilman's bout with c jackson in the 145-pound class was very exciting heilman scoring a fall with but two sec onds to go with a bar nelson and reverse chancery louie long encountered some very stiff opposition in the 158-pound of the best known as well as the best-liked men on the cam pus during his junior year stor er was elected captain of the football team but he was forc ed to leave school at the end of that year he played on the lehigh team for three years coming from mercersburg where he also starred on the gridiron during the time he represented lehigh storer played a brilliant position at halfback and was one of the cleverest runners on our cham continued on page four college lecture hour on thursday to be taken up by movie middies outswim lehigh tank men successful dormitory dances of last year to be renewed frosh swimmers lose to tigers calendar with astounding suddenness came the announcement that with a single significant act james ward packard lehigh 84 had made it possible for his alma mater to accomplish a greater program and better its present high scholastic standing he has given to le high 1,000,000 for the purpose of erecting the mechanical and electrical engineering build ing which until now had been but a hope the full significance of this act is difficult to appreciate it proves that lehigh is not bask ing in the glory of its former standards it proves that the university is not standing still but is moving abreast of the foremost in the advance ment of science and education in a previous article when the building existed only in the form of a proposal a complete story of the plans and purposes was outlined the building will cost approximate 1 y 700,000 for its erection and 300,000 for its maintenance it will be devoted entirely to the departments of mechanical and electrical engineering the plans show that it will rank with the greatest labora tories in america every phase of the work in these two branches of engineering will be cared for the greatest fea ture of all perhaps being the tremendous possibilities for re search that it will afford its laboratories classrooms offices lecture rooms library equip ment — everything will repre sent the finest that modern sci ence and engineering can pro vide but the present formidable team to redeem last year's defeat the naval academy swim ming team aspiring to inter collegiate honors this year op ened its season by severely de feating the brown and white tank men 48-14 at annapolis the middies were successful in every event as they annexed first place in all the meet was the initial one for both teams continued on page four the most thrilling event of the afternoon was the 100-yard free style race when four swim mers were bunched at the fin ish for three-quarters of the distance hertzler representing the brown and white set the pace but at the finish he was compelled to take fourth place cressy the victor finished but the freshman swimming team was defeated by the princeton yearlings at prince ton last saturday by a 47-13 score the tiger led all the way but the brown and white yearlings showed that they had some good material that is bound to develop in time continued on page four the freshmen besides hav ing to battle the tiger also had to battle the weather the team left bethlehem by taxi about noon saturday and encountered quite a bit of snow and bad weather on the trip to prince ton they arrived there safely however about four o'clock it was on the return trip that they had their difficulties they tomorrow the varsity bas ketball team will journey to the sunny southland to lock horns with the navy in the fourth game of the season the south mountaineers will go to anna polis smarting from three un fortunate defeats at the hands of rivals who should have been easily overcome in those games all three of the oppos ing teams managed by last minute rallies to wrest the de cision from the lehigh men last year the team went to the navy and added her scalp to its already laden belt by a score of 25-23 last saturday the navy men scored an easy win over the university of maryland cagemen but the brown and white team re freshed by its layoff since its one point defeat at the hands continued on page four freshman and sophomore chapel-goers as well as the smaller number of upper class men who daily attend packer memorial church should be greatly interested in the an nouncement by dean mcconn regarding chapel attendance for the present term the fewest possible number of times that anyone may be allowed to hand in chapel attendance cards and yet pass the course is 45 the numerical deadline anyone who shall have been present forty-five mornings or more will be graded a b c and d depending upon their average those who fall below the 45 mark will have to repeat the course at a later term the total possible number of chapel attendances is 76 men who attend chapel nine-tenths of the time 68 or more will at tain a grade of a 60 to 67 b 53-59 c 45-52 less than 45 f 45 represents three-fifths of the total juniors sophomores and freshmen desiring to pass the course in college lectures will have a golden opportunity to help their standing tomorrow at the south side high school auditorium when the histori cal play julius caesar will be put on the screen out of the five college lectures it is necessary to attend three to pass a perfect attendance will merit an a 4 of the five b 3 d 1 or 2 f last thursday the ten men recently pledged to the cyan ide club assembled in drown hall to elect five of their class mates who will complete the club membership of fifteen men for the coming year after selecting from among the prominent members of the junior class those men who have excelled in class activities athletics dramatics and liter ary work the announcement was made that kenton chick ering ralph ellis herbert c hobbs james c morrison and charles r stauffer were chos en for the honor of having their names added to the club roster after the initiation which will take place in the near fu ture the seniors who now compose the membership of the club will relinquish the reigns of power to these newly elect ed members who are the lead ers of the present junior class the dormitory dances of taylor hall which were start ed last year and were so well received by the school will be revived on saturday night jan uary 22 in drown hall the hall was greatly commended last year for inaugurating a so cial function for the men on the campus although the dances were well attended by the town men as well as those actually living on the campus both fred trafford and the faculty members who attend ed the dances last year were hearty in their praise and stated that it was one of the biggest steps ever taken by the men on the hill the lehigh mountaineers will play at the dance begin ning at
