c a meet ing sunday evening at 6.15 pro fessor miller has recently returned from a year s leave of absence dur ing which he traveled 22,500 miles and visited many south and central american countries the music is to be furnished by the misses katherine read and mary gaither of the moravian semi nary a number of the students of the moravian seminary are ex pected to attend the meeting panama canal lecture reviews influx of different na tionalities into america lecture illustrated the first college lecture of the second term was given this morn ing in the chapel by dr j t rothrock who lectured on the human product of pennsylvania forests in the development of the nation the speaker's principal points were first pennsylvania's roads through the wilderness to pitts burgh were important factors in the adoption of the federal consti tution under which we live ; second the exigencies of backwoods life in pennsylvania changed the german and scotch-irish immigrants of the 17th and 18th centuries into the most adventurous pioneer settlers of the appalachian region third that it is to them more than to any other class we owe the earliest set tlement of the regions south and west of pittsburgh the preparation for and the protection of the popu lation that followed fourth that abandoning our timberless moun tains to fire and flood means de population of the region and the loss to the state of a class of citi zens we can ill afford to spare the year 1758 was marked by three events which are memorable not only to this state but to the whole civilized world the fortress of louisburg which guarded the entrance to the gulf of st law rence and held quebec in its keep ing fort frontenac where the city of kingston now stands guarding the entrance to the in terior of the continent by the chain of our great lakes and fort dv quesne which guarded the head of the ohio and leading to the middle west all fell into english hands this determined the great fact that the latin race was not to give char acter to and dominate north america the site of pittsburgh at the junction of the two important riv ers alone gave it value as a strategic point there was no suspicion that beneath the surface billions of dol lars worth of mineral wealth was lying concealed rumors of the fertile country west of pittsburgh reached vir ginia maryland and pennsylvania as early as 1750 a company known as the ohio company was formed to finance the exploration of the region so full of promise gist was sent out to see and report upon it he reached muskingum a hundred miles by water beyond pittsburgh and found that george crogham from pennsylvania was there before him gist followed an indian trail from cumberland over the divide between the waters of the potomac and those of the youghiogany the principal tributary of the monon gahela thence it in the main is said to have followed the valley of the youghiogany until within a few miles of fort duquesne continued on second page tion according to last year's rul ing the association gives two shows each year the second usually a mu sical comedy staged the latter part of april the production this year is an assured success inasmuch as the second wrestling meet of the season will be staged tomorrow af ternoon at 3 p m in taylor gym when lehigh will have for its op ponent the new york athletic club freshmen to play moravian reserves tomorrow afternoon at three o clock the freshmen basketball team will meet the moravian col lege reserves team on the latter s floor the moravian team is light but exceedingly fast the fresh men team will be handicapped ow ing to lack of practice the line-up : freshmen positions reserves mellville ...... f c hagen barrett f strohmeier thomas c mueller hurley g stolz burgess g kilpatrick the most spectacular game of the season from the lehigh stand point was played on the local floor last wednesday night when the brown and white team completely outclassed the university of pitts burgh quintet and won a well played game by a score of 38 to 24 the pittsburgh team came here undefeated having been victorious against yale colgate carnegie tech perm state and lafayette so far this season the decided drubbing handed them by lehigh was more or less unexpected by both teams and the victory places lehigh in the lead in the pennsyl vania intercollegiate basketball league a large and enthusiastic crowd attended the game tom thorpe of columbia refereed the game the first half started out by a clever goal by crichton from almost the middle of the floor the first ten minutes of play were very closely contested neither side maintaining a safe lead at first the brown and white five showed signs of nervousness but soon settled down and played the rest of the game in by far the best form shown here this season in the first half mcnulty was the only visitor to cage a field basket he having three to his credit while lubic the visitors captain managed to make five out of eight fouls green and ketcham in this half completely smothered pittsburgh s forwards and broke up many attempts to take the ball down the floor green's playing in this half was of the spectacular order both from guarding and goal shooting stand point he caged four difficult field goals in this half two of which were from the middle of the floor brewster caged three with crich ton two and dynan one most of lehigh s goals were long shots and from difficult angles brewster also made two out of three fouls in this half the half ended with le high leading 22-11 the second half started out by dynan tossing a goal from the cor ner in the first minute of play in the first ten minutes oif play le high maintained her lead about 12 points the visitors seemed unable to get together and the brown and white team played all around them this half and showed clever team work in carrying the ball down the floor pittsburgh made several substitutions at the end of the first ten minutes of play but with little success in this half the airtight guarding of the whole team kept the visitors in check at all times dynan caged two clever goals in this half while green ketcham and brewster each had one and brew ster showed fine form in foul shoot ing making six out of eight at tempts when finally the whistle blew lehigh led by a score of 38 to 24 the game was fast and well played and while hard fought was cleanly played lehigh was the greatest offender in fouls having fourteen to the visitors eleven continued on fourth page the february meeting of the civil engineering play many manuscripts were submitted last wednesday among which were sev eral original works those receiv ing the most attention were a night for a day the sunshine girl the college widow and several other comedies by george ade a call for candidates has been made and they are asked to report on monday evening at 7.30 in drown hall a special invitation is given to the freshmen class by monday night the committee in charge will have selected the pro duction so that the candidates may have an idea of what is to be ex pected and from then on the work and practices will proceed steadily a special call for the chorus can didates will be issued later soccer team will play lafayette tomorrow at easton in second round for wilbur cup the visitors will present a for midable line-up composed of for mer college stars and some of the best amateurs in this part of the country early in the season the n y a c with four men wrestling in the seven classes defeated princeton university two men who will doubtless wrestle tomorrow are leahy metropolitan champion in the 158-pound class and pendle ton last year's intercollegiate champion in the 175-pound class and captain of the team represent ing columbia university he will likely wrestle in the heavyweight class tomorrow the work of the lehigh matmen against boston tech was especially gratifying the old men came up to expectations and the new men more than made good consider able time during the past week was devoted in rectifying the defects which showed up in last saturday's contest the only change in the lehigh line-up will be the shifting of lev in from the 175-pound to the heavyweight class and the substi tution of scruggs in the 175-pound class no 32
