rifle club students find the efficiency and economy of the boilers and engines of plant beginning wednesday noon march first and continuing until thursday noon march second a ! period of twenty-four hours the i senior classes in engineering lab | oratory ran a test on the complete j plant of the bethlehem city water company these classes included all the seniors taking mechanical electrical mining or metallurgi | cal engineering and also the i electro-metallurgist the plant is located about two miles west from the lehigh valley station on the south bank of the lehigh river the water is pumped from the river up to the reservoir on the hill which in turn supplies the town the plant consists of two bab cock and wilcox tubular boilers of 240 horsepower each these sup ply steam to a jeansville cross compound condensing corliss pumping engine and to a duplex double acting direct expansion compound condensing gaskell pumping engine built by the holly manufacturing company of loickport n v in 1892 and re built by the bethlehem steel com pany in 1908 a vacuum pump and a feed water pump are used to feed water into the boilers the purpose of the test was to findi the efficiency and economy of the boilers engines and complete plant the number of gallons of water pumped per day the total head of water pumped against and the duty and slip of the pumps the classes were divided up into four shifts of six hours each the first shift beginning at 12 m wed nesday and continuing until 6 p m the second shift running from then until midnight the third shift until 6 a m thursday and the fourth and last shift ending at 12 m thursday mr r l spen cer of the mechanical engineer ing department was in full charge and was assisted by mr rhoades of the same department philadelphia minister gave talk on the bible leaders give suggestions the combined meeting of the dis cussion groups was held in drown j hall on wednesday evening march 1 the attendance was very good \ considering the fact that the la fayette basketball game was sched uled to begin at eight the meeting was opened by president wynne who gave a brief summary of the year s work by the y m c a the work has pro gressed considerably this year due to the untiring efforts of secretary j m frey the branch school at the steel works instituted for the purpose of instructing foreigners in english has been marked by inter est and progress the naturaliza tion classes only recently started have prepared the men so well that only one was unable to pass the ex amination to qualify him as a citi zen mr h i fair chairman of the bible study committee under whose supervision the discussion groups were organized then took the chair and introduced the first speaker of the evening mr clapp mr clapp began his talk by com plimenting his audience on their earnestness and good spirit the hope of the nation rests in the young men of our universities ' ' he declared and the severest test of our form of government will come in a few years therefore renew your allegiance to god and a purer citizenship will give us a true demo cratic government rev james robinson of bethle hem was the second speaker ef ficiency he began is getting the most work out of the least expendi ture of energy the church is not efficient the ministers are doing their best but they lack the sup port of the laymen it is the func tion of the y m c a to offer an opportunity for young men to identify themselves with the church work and be most efficient in advancing her cause rev robinson also told a story of the british trenches illustrating the on monday february 28 the lehigh university rifle club's team shot off a match with the team from ohio state college the men were shooting quite a little be low par in this match and there fore a better score is looked for in next week's match last week the team defeated lowa state college in a match of the intercollegiate gallery rifle championships the individual scores in this week's match were as follows : j f holmes 195 ; l j lucken bach 193 ; w f yates 193 ; w s smith 190 ; h j pardee 190 ; to tal team score 961 chapel music game hard played by teams easton team scores only twice from field the lehigh basketball team atoned for their 20 to 17 defeat at the hands of lafayette several weeks ago when they defeated their easton rivals in taylor gym nasium on wednesday evening by a score of 25 to 16 the game was lehigh s from start to finish la fayette made the first score but in a few minutes they were overtaken by the brown and white team and the latter were never headed troxell scored first for lafayette when he succeeded in two out of his four attempts at a foul goal brew ster followed with a score for le high in the same manner crich ton then made two pretty field goals in succession from under the basket and brewster added two more giving lehigh a lead of five points troxell added two more points for lafayette via the foul route while brewster for lehigh scored a foul goal as well as a goal from the field anderson the la fayette forward followed with a field goal and troxell scored two more points from the fifteen-foot mark the period ended with le high in the lead by a score of 10 to 8 in the second half troxell again made the first score with a single point goal dynan for lehigh scored two points and brewster added two more from fouls called on lafayette troxell also scored two for lafayette and brewster again added two to lehigh s score by his accurate foul shooting trox ell caged a foul goal dynan shot a pretty basket from the field brew ster added a point from the foul line troxell scored twice again from the fifteen-foot line for le high ketcham and dynan each caged a basket from the field and brewster scored from a foul brew ster again scored a point for le high and luhr who had replaced paulson at center for lafayette scored from the field the period ended with the score in lehigh s favor by the safe margin of 25 to 16 both lehigh and lafayette were somewhat off color in shooting but the brown and white was less erratic than their rivals the le high team secured a total of eight baskets while lafayette had but two it was due to the steadiness of troxell in caging goals from fouls that lafayette made as good a showing as the score indicates the lafayette forward made good in twelve of his eighteen attempts and brewster for lehigh secured nine out of thirteen attempts the latter seemed unable to find himself in the first period but in the sec ond half scored seven out of eight free shots continued on sixth page the lehigh team as a whole played equally well brewster and defeated twice by state losing all bouts showing im proved form the brown and white team winds up the basketball season to morrow with the state game this is the second game with state col lege the first being played on their floor during the western trip by losing this game to state by a score of 29-19 lehigh was eliminated from championstiip honors february 25 the university of pittsburgh defeated perm state the lehigh wrestling team left yesterday on its first trip of the season which includes meets with perm state and university of pitts burgh tonight the team will meet the crack perm state matmen on the latter s floor state is coached by dexter very one of the best ath letes turned out by that institution a few years ago he was the best 158-pound man in collegiate ranks to date state has had a very suc cessful season winning four out of five meets they defeated the uni versity of pittsburgh twice in both meets pittsburgh lost all the bouts boston tech and prince ton were the other institutions de feated navy was the only team to score a victory the individual records of the men this season who will represent state against lehigh is as follows : 115-pound class capt long won four bouts lost one 125-pound class a e brown won four bouts lost one 135-pound class m m long won live bouts 145-pound class h r prickett won two bouts lost one 158-pound class h c verger won four bouts lost one 175-pound class f g parrish won three lost one tied one unlimited s j czarnecki won four bouts lost one from this summary it can be seen that state has a strong well balanced aggregation the scores made by state and lehigh against boston tech were practically the same comparison shows the teams evenly matched with state having a slight advantage due to practi cally a veteran team the lehigh wrestlers are show ing improvement 4n every meet and can be depended upon to make a favorable showing all the men are i,n good shape with the excep tion of c hiss whose ankle was hurt in practice e jenness will probably w t restle in his place the line-up follows : announcing his belief in ' ' practical christianity that such a belief is becoming more widespread is il lustrated by just such movements as that under consideration i am proud to see such a turnout of le high men to this meeting ' ' he said and believe that it is the best meeting of its kind ever held here ' ' prof palmer was next called up on and responded with several criti cisms of the system as it has been conducted this year he commented upon the books which were used as a guide in this year's discussions on the grounds that although the subjects are no doubt interesting and precisely what should be known they were too hackneyed to enlist enthusiasm if there is one thing lehigh needs it is religion so the proper subject for discussion would be what is religion and what are 1 the
