reorganization of the club the meeting was addressed by professor blake of the arts and science department and professor palmer of the german depart ment the meeting was also briefly addressed by several student mem bers in regards to finances indi vidual support and future meeting programs prof blake's talk to the club consisted of a discussion of the life and readings from the prose and poetical works of rupert brooke the english writer who recently died during the unsuccessful cam paign of england at the darda nelles as an introductory pro fessor blake gave a short discussion of rupert brooke's style and a brief outline of his life rupert brooke was a man of promise much talked of often written about and surely a poet of permanent work he was a rugby man fond of ath letics a good football player in his school days and a great swimmer although always interested in peace he enlisted at the outbreak of the war and was with the eng lish at antwerp at the time of the futile drive of the germans from antwerp he was moved to the dar danelles and there contracted blood poison from which he died at the age of 27 prof blake then read several prose selections the first was a rather sarcastic review given by a young english visitor to new york in his rambling talk he includes everything from advertising to education from music halls to antiquities there were several snatches of humor in the article that made it exceedingly amusing this was followed by a piece en titled some niggers several other shorter works finished up the prose side of rupert brooke turning now to the poetical side prof blake said that the writer had a tendency toward extravagant expression as well as to being rather satirical the following se lections were read the sea tide which is a direct talk to the members of the arts and sci ence club regarding their responsi bilities to the club to make it a suc cess he also dwelt upon the club conditions of the university pro fessor palmer said in part : continued on second page those who attended the y m c a meeting in drown hall on sun day evening heard thomas l law ton of germantown philadelphia speak on the topic of two calls mr felt by all present the special music consisted of two vocal solos by j mckay 17 accompanied by tomlinson the substance of mr lawton s talk is as follows we all ar fpmi^ar with the call of the wild by jack lon don and how that book show t s that the call of our ignoble instinct tends to draw us away from our surrounding although the point is made for a dog it is quite as ap plicable to mankind every man is tempted and drawn towards the ways of evil across the path of every one comes the call to the wild pi somp time or another is it our weak will or our strong desire that determines whether we are to yield ? this is a debatable question but in almost every case it is the strong desire that breaks the weak will when temptation comes all of us seem to have a knowledge of the sorrow that attends evil it is especially true that young men have a desire to take the experi mental cure for evil but i lose my patience with that young man when he later comes and whines because he then has so many new tempta tions to combat but opposed to this call is the second call the call of the noble with these two calls the same old rule works the more a man fol lows the call of the wild the more he is exposed to its temptations while the more a man follows the call of the noble the more he is able to resist the temptations we must remember however that the sin is not in the temptation but in • the yielding to the temptation if we do not yield to the call of the wild all the powers of evil cannot drag us into evil therefore the wise thing for us to do is to get ac quainted with ourselves robert spear once sat down and made a list of the things he was strong in and then a list of the things he was weak in on looking the list over he was surprised at the length of the weak list and at the shortness of the strong list i think it would be well for us to analyze ourselves in this way just for the sake of know ing ourselves temptation comes to us in many ways it comes through men through books through organiza tions all these things issue either a call to the right or a call to the wrong paul says that he delighted in the call to right and was re morseful when the call to the wrong came this raises the ques tion of whether discouragement is a liability or an asset while it may be a liability in many cases yet i think that often it is an asset keeping us straight when the call of the wild comes by holding us continued on second page the chemical society will hold a meeting in saucon hall at 7.30 on friday evening the men who have so far sur vived the third round in
