well illustrated by means of moving pictures and stereopticon views mr blanchard has spent twelve years in travelling over this portion of the united states and knows the country and its inhabi tants perfectly at the start the speaker pointed out that the lecture was in the nature of a travelogue and in the course of the hour he carried his hearers over a country of 12,000 miles throughout that part of the united states covered by texas arizona new mexico and cali fornia the region inhabited by the cliff dwellers was visited first views were shown of the remains of these castles built in the side walls of the canyons some of which contained 30,000,000 separate pieces of stone these had been cut out by hand by means of rude implements and carried up the cliff on the backs of men as early as the third and fourth century the government has reserved a number of these ruins to be pre served for future generations the speaker next showed in motion pictures the ancient villages of the moqui sacred rite of the moqui indians as given before former president roosevelt when he visited the south west farther north live the navajo indians famous as the originators and makers of the beautiful navajo blankets the speaker showed their life in motion pictures also in the deserts live the apaches who are the bedouins of america these people were formerly most war-like but are now submissive to the authority of the united states continued on second page the speaker described the co lossal projects undertaken by the reclamation service in its effort to reclaim the vast deserts of the south west for agricultural pur poses he took no time to go thoroughly into the engineering side of this work but showed the roosevelt dam which he said con tained sufficient water to com pletely inundate the state of dela ware and also a still larger dam in course of construction in the rio grande canyon which when fin ished will hold enough water to cover the state of connecticut to a depth of ten inches in addition to such projects the government is building roads over the mountains cornell won the annual inter collegiate wrestling contest held this year at princeton for the fifth consecutive year princeton qualified the most men in the preliminaries and looked strong but failed to show her strength in the finals running a poor second to cornell and beating out lehigh by but a few points cornell scored 24 points prince ton 14 lehigh 12 pennsylvania 11 while columbia brought up the rear with but a single point the 125 158 and 175-pound class championships went to cor nell pennsylvania took the 145 pound and heavyweight titles princeton captured the 115-pound class while charley hiss of le high carried away the laurels in the 135-pound class all the bouts were keenly contested and the falls were few and far between the scarcity of falls was largely ac counted for by the strict rules that were agreed upon before the matches started andi which were carried out by the referees the duration of the final bouts was fif teen minutes the second and third place and the preliminary bouts nine minutes if a fall was not made in this time a decision was to be made on the length of time each man was on top of the other if this time did not exceed one minute an extra period was to be allowed in which the former dif ference in time was not to be counted this rule was brought into play in the preliminary bouts between captain kirkhuff lehigh and mackenzie cornell kirkhuff was ahead by 56 seconds in the regular period but according to the rule an extra period was allowed and this difference in time not counted in the extra period mackenzie came out 10 seconds ahead and the referee was forced to give him the decision although he said kirkhuff was the more aggressive this rule will undoubtedly be abolished as it did not work out but kirkhuff re mainsi a victim of it another rule was that the con testants if not on the mat one minute after the referee called for them the bout was forfeited in this way servias of pennsylvania forfeited to mackenzie of cornell the former appearing on the mat five seconds too late due to the abundance of indi vidual stars such as frantz milli gan mckeague and dorizas le high did not show up so well in the preliminaries on friday night but came back strong on saturday and won nine points only one lehigh man was thrown in the entire
