hall high school in brooklyn present ing the advantages of lehigh the talk of mr walters was illustrated by sixty colored stereopticon views of the university buildings and campus the york county club of le high university has practically completed all arrangements for its easter dance to be held in york pa on the evening of april 24 as chief representative of the university dr h s drinker will give a talk which will be illus trated by stereopticon views of the campus and buildings this will precede the dance proper during intermission prof h r reiter will speak upon the subject when i was a boy the senior members of the pre paratory schools of the county have been invited as well as the le high alumni from the vicinity the object of the occasion is of course to boost lehigh and from present outlook the affair promises not only to be a great success but also to be the means of several new men entering lehigh next fall stadium junior banquet mr a m milligan a student in the medical school at the uni versity of pennsylvania will ad dress the y m c a meeting next sunday evening at 6.15 o'clock in drown memorial hall mr milligan is an exceptionally good speaker and should attract especial interest at this time be cause of the fact that he won the 145-lb intercollegiate wrestling championship last saturday at princeton he was the captain of the pennsylvania wrestling team this season there will also be a special musi cal program which will be of the usual high standard friday evening march 31 at 8 o'clock the class of 1917 will hold its third annual banquet at the ho tel allen in allentown the tick ets at a price of 2.75 may be ob tained from any of the members of the committee which consists of custer gilmore randolph tate and frobisher senior banquet tonight students in asia tonight at 7.15 india will be the subject discussed in the stu dents of asia study group under rev robinson of bethlehem in the y m c a room drown hall in commenting on the report of the committee of the national academy of science dr b l mil ler head of the department of ge ology has the following to say : gold hill is very unstable and slides may occur at any time zion hill is still breaking back and may continue to do so contractor hill is the most stable one of the group the slides will probably con tinue for the next twenty-five years until practically all if not all of gold hill and much of zion hill must be removed the present method of allowing the material to be forced into the canal and then using dredges to remove it is bound to close the canal periodically by adopting the method of cutting away the hills by means of steam shovels the slide question would be definitely settled ' ' the report in part follows the committee looks to the fu ture of the canal with confidence it is not unmindful of the labor necessary to dieal with the present slides and it realizes that slides may be considerable but not an un reasonably large maintenance charge upon the canal for a num ber of years it also realizes that trouble in the culebra district may possibly again close the canal nev ertheless the committee firmly be lives that after the present difficul ties have been overcome navigation through the canal is not likely again to be seriously interrupted there is absolutely no justification for the statement that traffic will be repeatedly interrupted during a long period of years to come the canal will serve the great purpose for which it was constructed and the realization of that purpose in the near future is assured ' ' all slide material which reaches the canal must of course be re moved at a certain expense and in convenience the engineers esti mate that about 9,000,000 cubic yards will have to be removed be tween the two culebra slides and the dredges can remove 1,000,000 cubic yardis a month but it must not be supposed that the canal will remain closed for nine months as soon as the channel has been suffici ently deepened and the movement of the slides becomes so low that the dredges even when interrupted by passage of ships can more than keep pace with them the canal may be opened for navigation this time is probably not far off the committee believes that some sliding ground will continue to enter the canal for several years to come though in diminishing amounts any relatively inexpen sive measures which tend to arrest the present active slides or which promise to reduce the charge against maintenance of the canal in the future are therefore fully war ranted continued on sixth page ' ' the excavation of the canal and borings in its bottom show that a narrow belt between the two hills is composed of the soft gucaracha beds yet to the present time there has been no upheaval of the bottom of this part of the canal nor any continued on second page a five man team has been picked to represent lehigh this year at the meet on april eighth these men have been picked from their high standing in the individual and in the interfraternity bowling tourna ments they are andrews 16 ; murphy 16 h f w johnson 17 ; meschter 17 and tachovsky 18 these men have signified their willingness to pay their own ex penses to yale and are open to challenge by any man in college princeton and cornell have al ready signified their intentions of sending teams to the yale tourna ment on april 8 lehigh along with the other ber of the faculty of that institu tion in accordance with the cus tom of his country he has served the necessary term of enlistment in the army and presented a thorough review of the military system of switzerland the subject discussed by l p grossart 17 was mod ern methods of repairing asphalt pavements ' ' a most profitable evening was enjoyed by the members of the so ciety in the entertainment offered by dr and mrs drinker in their usual hospitable manner it was the most successful meeting of the year for the society mr noetzli s talk follows ' ' the very particular geographi cal position of switzerland makes it necessary for the country to pro tect its integrity not only with paper-treaties which can be of a very small value as the history of the last two years has shown but to be prepared against every attack by means of an efficient army who wants to have peace should prepare for war — this well-known saying is indeed very true especially for switzerland as there is no intention at all to use the swiss army for any other pur pose than to defend the frontiers against an invasion every physically able citizen of switzerland is obliged by law to do military service a medical ex amination which all the young men of nineteen years without any exception have to take will decide if the man is able for military ser vice — every youth is proud to be accepted in the twentieth year the young recruit gets a military train ing for about ten weeks ; in each of the following seven years the time of the so-called active service the soldier gets a training of ten days from the twenty-eighth to the thirty-fifth year the period of the landwehr or first reserve the service required is in an average only a few days per year from the thirty-sixth to the forty-fifth year the period of the land strum or second reserve the soldier is called for only one day per year for the single purpose of showing that his equipment which every soldier has to take home has been kept in good order for every intelligent soldier there is the possibility to become a non-coramissioned officer and afterwards perhaps officer by tak ing special training which requires together in an average about 200 days service although this may seem to be a pretty long period there has never been a deficiency in officers — nearly all the students continued on third page the senior class will hold their banquet at the hotel allen allen town tonight at 8 o'clock work on the new sections of the stadium is being slightly delayed by the weather of the 3000 cubic yards of earth to be taken out
