ot the navy j x . wentz 17 presented a student paper on the multi-unit control of railway motors mr wentz in his paper said by unit-control we mean the operation of two or more motor cars each propelled by its indi vidual motors from any master controller in the train ' ' the uniform acceleration of the train is accomplished by different arrangements of the connectionsi between the motors in changing from one set of connections to an other the motor circuits must be broken and since they carry very large currents the switching ap paratus is very bulky ■' it was in order to eliminate the danger and waste of carrying these heavy currents from car to car and having them close to the operator that the system in use on electrified railroads today was brought out the latest method of effecting this remote control is the hl unit switch type of the westinghouse company it consists of a low voltage small current system which operates the different pieces of ap paratus which carry the heavy motor currents the main parts in this system are : the master con troller the unit switch and the magnet valve to explain the operation of the whole system i will begin with the magnet valve this is an electro magnetic device for controlling the compressed air which operates the unfit switch the electro-magnet is enclosed in a cast iron box through the center of the core of this magnet runs an operating pin which carries an armature at its upper end the lower end is turned to form two valves when there is no current flowing through the coil the spring holds the armature up the lower valve thus closes the in let to the unit switch cylinder and the upper one opens the outlet from it when by turning the master controller the coil is connected to the direct current supply the armature is drawn down against the force of the spring the inlet to the unit switch cylinder is opened and the exhaust port is closed the operation of this valve is extremely simple and the moving parts are not complicated so the first re quirement of uniform service is fulfilled the second of the master con troller circuit is the unit switch this is the switch which carries the heavy motor currents it is opened and closed by a vertical rod this rod carries a piston at its lower end which fits air tight into a cast iron cylinder when the rod is down as far as it will go that is continued
