mr r j weiser of bethlehem steel gives talk on biast furnaces major-general leonard wood formerly chief of staff of the henry viii student paper score 5 to 4 tomorrow both the baseball and lacrosse teams of the university are scheduled for games the baseball team will play the swarthmore nine on taylor field while the la crosse team travels to hoboken to meet stevens institute both games united states army will be the speaker at the college lecture to be given saturday may 6 at 11 a m in the chapel he will discuss plattsburg and the idea of mili tary camps in an effort to create to be given by members of le high student=body plan of pageant sea level canal across new jersey subject of paper by l b ryon 17 inexperienced team wins from ithicans for the first time in seven years are the second ones of the respect ive schedules for lehigh but the lacrosse game will be the first for stevens swarthmore has played but one game of baseball and that was a victory over cornell interest in the summer camps so that lehigh may have a large rep resentation at plattsburg next sum mer when five camps will be held one of these will be open ex clusively to undergraduates as stated in the bulletin sent out by the war department the object of the camp is to give the college men a good idea of military tactics this does not mean that those who attend will be compelled to enter the service in case of war major-general wood entered the army first in the hospital corps having graduated from the har vard medical school he served in the spanish war and was made a brigadier general in 1898 for ser vices at the battle of san juan hill the same year he was awarded the congressional medal of honor for distinguished conduct against the apache indians in 1908 he be came commander of the division of the east in which capacity he served for a year the next year he was appointed special ambassa dor to argentine republic and ful filled an important mission on his return he was appointed chief of staff of the army swarthmore has one of the best teams she has had in years but ex pects a hard game on our own side lehigh realizes that its oppo nents can not easily be beaten but nevertheless feels that with the spring weather back again it will be able to bring forth old-time abil ity like our own team the visitors have been handicapped by getting a very late start in outdoor prac tice moreover an entire five-game trip through virginia was pre vented by the inclement weather of the last few weeks to date swarth more's only opponent on the dia mond has been cornell this game was on april 6 and resulted in vic tory for swarthmore by the score of 8 to 4 swarthmore s outfield is com posed of three veterans and the same can practically be said of the infield on the receiving end the veteran harry is doing the bulk of the work the pitching staff con sists of e cornog ogden baker and corse of whom the first two continued on fifth page york county club dance mustard and cheese orchestra needs men all plans for the dance to be given by the york county lehigh club have been completed the affair will be held in the outdoor club hall on monday evening april 24 a dance program of sixteen numbers has been ar ranged which will be supple mented with a speech by dr h s drinker prof h r reiter will talk on if i were a boy — or girl and registrar r w wal ters during the intermission will give a short illustrated talk stu dents of all the county preparatory and high schools have been invited students y.m.c.a speakers the music for the songs and dances in the fascinating wid ow will be furnished by the mus tard and cheese orchestra an or ganization of twenty-one men un der the leadership of l j lucken bach 17 the work of the orchestra is pro gressing in fine style and should score a hit the evening of the per formance between the acts the musicians will favor with ten selec tions ranging from light opera to classical " mardigardo " a waltz which will be used in the third act as a solo dance is a composition of luckenbach's the personnel of the orchestra includes at present only six lehigh men more students are desired and all men having musical ability are urged to report to the leader at the brown and white lacrosse team opened the season last wed nesday with a victory over her old rival cornell by a score of 5 to 4 the game marked the first victory over cornell in the past seven years the game was hotly con tested and the final result was in doubt until the final whistle blew after the ball had been centered the brown and white team lost no time in using its team w t ork sny der received the ball after three clean passes and registered the first goal for lehigh a moment later gearguilo made it one all by a pretty shot from the side of the field the play of both teams at this point was very good with cor nell on the defense most of the time gearguilo again arose to the occasion with a short shot in front of the lehigh goal at this stage of the game the defense of both teams tightened up the ball stay ing mostly in the center of the field cornell called time and w t hen play was resumed both teams missed many attempts at the goal by a series of long passes cornell worked the ball through the lehigh de fense and palmer scored at this stage of the game lehigh took a new lease on life cornell be ing unable to get hold of the ball the game began to roughen but even this could not break up the play of the home team barclay sent the ball to waite who scored on a neat shot from the side of the goal the lehigh team work con tinued to improve and just before half time barclay evened the score with one of the prettiest shots of the game second half just after the second half began dayton was substituted for ken nedy for the first five minutes the ball was kept almost constantly in the cornell territory johnson caught the red and white goal keeper sleeping and sent in an easy goal cornell then began to bom bard at the lehigh goal but tate who played his first game of la crosse for the brown and white kept the visitors from scoring greer was substituted for john son who had received a gash over the right eye snyder then scored which proved to be the winning tally of the game by a short shot in front of the visitors goal lewis was substituted for greer and al den for dayton the cornell team kept up a wonderful fighting spirit graham scoring the last goal of the game coach grimes then substi tuted collier for lewis and thomas for alden cornell substituted cropsy for schock toward the end of the game both teams indulged in rough play sny der being knocked unconscious by a blow on the head the brown and white defense thwarted all the at tempts of the visitors to score in the remainder of c f ruff 18 ; h f shartel 18 l b ryon 17 read a paper on the sea level canal across new jersey the paper brought out the necessity for and the economi cal benefits of a waterway of this kind the military and naval bene fits to be derived were also touched on his discussion follows the sea level canal across 1 new jersey is the most important unit of the proposed continuous inland waterway from boston to florida to determine me beet and cheapest route was a matter of much investi gation and consideration at first the old delaware and raritan canal was considered but was re jected for the following reasons 1 it passed through too many towns in which the cost of land was prohibitive ; 2 at new bruns wick the main trunk line of the pennsylvania railroad crosses the canal on a fixed low bridge which cannot be elevated without enor mous expense nor can the canal level be lowered more than a few feet the canal depth is 7 feet at trenton the pennsylvania railroad tracks go under the canal and the canal cannot be lowered 3 the canal follows rivers which are sub ject to floods 4 considerable rock would be encountered in ex cavating for the enlarged section which fact makes the cost pro hibitive the inadequacy of this canal led to an agitation for a new waterway after extensive surveys and careful studies the forr owing pro posed route was selected : from philadelphia up the delaware to bordentown thence in a north easterly direction to morgan new jersey through raritan bay to new york the total distance across new jersey to be excavated being 33.7 miles there are no bad bends to interfere with navi gation no towns are passed through no rock was found along the entire length of the canal from the surface to a depth of twenty five feet below mean water borings having been taken approximately every 1000 feet there is plenty of unused land all along the route on which spoil can be wasted with short hauls ' ' in all 211 borings were made to a depth of 25 feet below the mean ! water of the ocean the materials encountered were loam sand clay and a very little bravel with a few boulders near the delaware river end the absence of rock is due to the fact that it follows the geo logical formation known as pen sauken sound continued on fifth page april 26 the impossibility of many of the men being able to attend this con cert as well as the inconvenient time
