was shown as strikingly human though rob bed of much which legend has gathered about his name he still stands as a formidable figure in the colonial struggle for freedom dr dodd ascrib ed material interclass meet were held in most of the classes the tryouts decided the representatives for the fresh man sophomores juniors and seniors but in a few of the weight classes additional bouts will have winners in each weight division only two of the veterans from last year's team are back in school again this year cap tain jimmy reed who will wrestle in the 125-pound divi sion and bill heilman who discussion last september spent his christmas vacation annexing new honors or to be more exact retaining those which he held january first seligson was called upon to defend his crown as junior tennis singles cham pion frank shields who held the title in 1925 set a stagger ing pace in the first set and would have regained the na tional indoor championship had he been able to maintain his fierce stride both players pro duced all they had and bril liant volleying brought con tinued applause weakness in back hand defense and the loss of his own service in the fif teenth game cost seligson the opener the second set was hard fought well placed smashes after deuce had been called fre quently gave the champion the final two games shields appeared nervous as the third set opened he lost his balance twice and his rac quet once a cool court seem ed to bother both players shields service dimmed and he began to net his returns con tinually allowing seligson to take the lead continued on page schedule the brown and white is expected to stage a come back against the fast-traveling outfit which represents the un iversity of pennsylvania the quintet which faces coach geary's charges tomor row is a strong aggregation which possesses a clever pass ing attack perm should rule the favorite in that it is play ing on its home court before a friendly crowd and in that its players should take the floor in better physical condition as a result of a strenuous campaign in the last two weeks despite the fact that the red and blue inaugurated their sea son rather inauspiciously by meeting an unexpected defeat at the hands of ursinus coach eddie mcnichol's proteges have compiled an enviable record to date two philadelphia col leges drexel and st joseph's bowed before the perm attack before christmas and an inva sion of rochester on a short holiday trip netted another vic tory but the great syracuse five which is led by vie han son all-american end and one of the leading forwards in the east last winter and which ex tended its winning streak of last season to twenty before bowing to the university of michigan combination at ann arbor recently easily triumph ed over the quakers 33-16 the red and blue second team op posed the pennsylvania mili tary college outfit and annexed another close victory 21-17 on december 30 in the first game ever played at the palestra on new year's day the formal opening of this magnificent sports edifice was marked by a perm win in its first eastern intercollegiate league game of the season the none-too-strong yale team met a 26-15 reverse in this game the third defeat of the season was sustained on wednesday afternoon of this week when the undefeated na val academy five added the red and blue to the list of its victims early in the season the perm lineup included captain pudge davenport and joe schaaf forwards monty chapman center and menchy goldblatt and tom magner guards but schaaf and magner were continued on page four intensive training and prac tice following the period of rest during the holidays has been the daily fare of the brown and white tankmen all this week in preparation for the initial dual meet of 1927 with navy at annapolis on the 15th of this month as a result of the two preliminary meets held before the holidays coach gulick now has his pro teges lined up and the positions selected for the various events for the relay and dashes captain raleigh wynn hertz ler ellis o'callaghan and price will strive to make their places on the varsity team wynn has developed remark ably since last year and his in jured ankle is now as sound as ever in the 440 yard swim webb is probably the coach's choice but alburg has shown fine form and speed and no doubt will have a chance at the quarter mile event in more than one meet this season leader and coxe both veterans in the breast stroke are again proving themselves to be a strong combination with pel lizzonni coming along rapidly alburg is also starring in the back stroke but will not be fully developed for this event until later in the season this is the only department in which the varsity natators are lacking material coach gulick will have no worries over the diving with four excellent men performing on the board in the persons of hobbs hayes blood and van nort hayes took a period of rest between the close of foot ball and the holidays but is now showing high-score diving form hobbs kept in trim while college was not in ses sion by competing in the cen tral swimming club meet un der the auspices of the a.a.u at brooklyn on december 28th he won the diving meet by a tenth of a point over rahms dorff who is metropolitan low board champion and runner up for the high board champion ship hobbs turned in a card of 99.1 points while rahms dorff succeeded in collecting a flat 99 points hobbs was en abled to do this by performing two new and very difficult dives these were a running two-and a-half front somersault and a back jack-knife with a one and one-half somersault time trials for the navy meet will take place next thurs day afternoon and some fairly good times will be shown as claims for the various berths on the team among the men who displayed good form last year but who have not yet turned out this year is good continued on page three this college year brings with it a specially favorable op portunity in connection with those who wish to compete for fellowships for foreign univer sities through the institute of international education both german and french universi ties offer fellowships to amer ican students who are thor oughly prepared to utilize them the american german stu dent exchange inc will award a limited number to american students for the year 1927-28 german universities have estab lished these fellowships as an international exchange for sim ilar fellowships established in american colleges for german students it is hoped that the fellows will do their part tow ard developing international friendship and good will by creating a tradition of coopera tion and reciprocity between the united states and germany in the study of the institutions continued on page three and psychology of the two countries the fellowships are open to both men and women to meet the requirements for eligibility a candidate must present proof of american cit izenship a working knowl edge of german ; ability to car the freshmen swimmers under the watchful eye of coach gulick have been daily striving for speed and endur ance in preparation for their first meet of the season sched uled to take place before mid year tankmen for either january 15 or march 19 although march 19 is later than usual for a swimming meet the brown and white mermen will be well seasoned through their engagements with blair rutgers and the champion mercersberg team in case the latter date is agreed upon the season will open at blair the princeton contest will take place at princeton re gardless of the date before the opening splash in either blairstow/i or princeton another practice meet will be held with the allentown y m c a these trials at allen town constitute the finest sort of practice for the future meets they also provide a good meth od of picking the team for the first trip in the meet with the var sity before the christmas holi days the frosh were com pletely submerged 43-12 how ever this pre-season encounter awarded a lehigh diploma last june cressman has been appointed an assistant professor in the german department of the western university and is re ported as meeting with excep tional success in obtaining his degree of bachelor of arts cressman was graduated with honors in german he is the author of a thesis written in german which prof palmer pronounced the best ever submitted in his de partment his success at il linois reflects credit upon le high's arts course and german department in addition to teaching cressman is work ing for his degree as master of arts in the illinois graduate school the university r o t c unit is to be inspected next monday and tuesday by lieu tenant colonel clarence deems jr field artillery united states army who is in charge of r o t c affairs for the third corps area the ob ject of his visit at this time is to determine whether lehigh is to be recommended as worthy of inspection by the war de partment for distinguished college rating the univer sity now has such a rating and this distinction rests largely upon the impression the unit makes at this time although the rating is not awarded until the spring lieutenant colonel clarence
