fifty-eight out for football large number of candidates trying out on taylor field prospects loom brighter material in college — only thing needed now is continuous training fifty-eight men have reported for football practice which began last monday the daily routine has consisted of signal practice kicking and the usual work preliminary to scrimmage coaches keady reiter pazzetti and flick have been put ting the men through rigid practice and several of the new men give evidence of developing into var sity material among the veterans who have re ported are keady fred green hoban grumbach cahall sawtelle tate ch enow eth and scruggs the remainder of the squad are craw ford wilts ayrault becker dela niey good frank green warren schuttler levin thornton hoff man wuchter hygiene lecture first of series to be given by dr estes delivered on friday the first of the series of lectures on hygiene by dr william l es tes surgeon in chief of the st luke's hospital was delivered in packer hall to the freshman class on friday morning at the close of the lecture the freshmen were told that the second-year men were wait ing below for than and they were not told wrongly for they were all there and armed to the teeth each man was told to roll his trousers to the knees wipe the smile show tlie green 5 and suck his thumb they were taken one by one and commanded to kneel before a large 17 chalked on the flagstones in front of the building and then kiss a part of it after all this they were commanded to run and it is surely a shame that the track coaches were not came hack to town the other day wended his way up the newly-paved broil head ave nue walked alonig the newly-con creted pavement on packer avenue saw the newly-remodeled copee hall and turned his eyes to che east there he saw a large white archway and he stood andwondered a student came along and the man stopped him is this lehigh uni versity he asked the reply is known to all well well would you ever ',' the new taylor gymnasium and athletic fields have attracted the attention of the old men just re turning from the rummer vaca tion and in particular the new men the freshmen to wnnm the pros pect of four years of athletics is especially bright the construction of the west-end stalds was pushed forward with the greatest speed all through the summer and with the opening of college this part of the immense stadium wfs found entire ly completed and work on the field house placed bet wen the stadium and north-end of he gymnasium has progressed so far that there is every indication that it will be fin ished by october 17th the date set for the dedication f the fields and gymnasium the uppee field and now the upper field has re ceived its finishing touches those only who have actually seen it can appreciate its beauty and artistic arrangement the large oval track has been cindered and only awaits a process of parking before it can be put to use the oval centre seeded earlier now presents a green appearance the sodded banks and terraces studded with small shrubs and the neat parking space and drive-way throngh the gymnasium complete the park-like arrangement and general appearance of the field to the fans ind football enthusi asts approaching taylor field through the drives of the univer sity the arched gateway and walls of the stadium present an impos ing picture the western walls of the gymnasium field-house and stadium are continuous and com posed o ; f the same material used in the gymnasium structure bricks of pressed lime and sand under the stands and on each side of the gate way we find the ticket offices six in all two more offices have been placed at the corner entrance at packer and locust streets tt 1 1 rhk-fi ft i s completed temporarily the work on the sta dium is completed as funds are not available for further construction hut the amount completed compris es approximately three-fifths of the total stadium and future operations will be to extend the south side sections around tire ball diamond here the next additions will be placed the south side of the sta dium now has 10 large sepions each continued on fourth page unusually large crowd at first function of christian association dr drinker speaks welcomes the entering classes stirring talks made by student leaders the annual freshman reception under the auspices of the y m c a was held in drown hall on fri day evening september 18th the reception was unusually well at tended by the students as it was the first opportunity for the fresh men to get into intimate relation ship with the faculty and upper classmen throughout the evening cheers and college songs were rendered the program containing many inter esting and well-known men who together with several solos made the evening a very enjoyable and profitable one the program was started by the introduction of president drinker who welcomed the incoming class he then told of the exceptional ad vantages students of lehigh now enjoy as compared with those that were to be had when he was an un dergraduate president brown of the senior class was then introduced in a few words he spoke of drown hall and its advantages and asked every student to exercise care in the use of the building and its amusements in conclusion president brown asked the aid of the student-body in supporting the supply bureau the college orchestra then gave a selection next on the program was coach reiter who 1 was given a warm re ception bosie gave a stirring speech calling on the freshmen to start their life here at lehigh right and to get into the game and fight he spoke of the great athletic ad vantages of lehigh of the teams of lehigh spirit and ended by urg ing each member of the class of 1918 to make himself a thorough man mentally morally and physi cally following this speech mr emery was called on to say a few words mr emery speaking extemporane ously gave a very interesting ad dress on lehigh and what she stands for following mr emery's talk miss christian gave a delight ful vocal solo which was enthusias tically received g sawtelle captain of wrestling was the next speaker in the course oif his speech he emphasized the desirability of a good physique ac companied with a good education allen of 1918 very creditably ren dered a mandolin solo mr whites ide who was the last speaker of the evening gave a brief talk on lehigh spirit concluding he spoke of the y m c a at le high and urged all the new men to join the association after the singing of the alma mater refreshments were served university dances announcement has been made that the university dances will continue this year as yet the dates have not been decided the football coach who was de nied standing room on the side lines during the games this fall under the new rules probably will be allowed to follow his team up and down the field in full view of the spectators before this season has gotten well under way at an interpretation meeting attended by coaches man agers captains and officials in new york saturday night and early sunday morning it was decided to make an attempt to restore the time honored privilege members of the football rules committee will be asked to vote as to whether it would be possible to allow the coach of each team to parade up and down the side lines by mutual agreement slips will be sent out from doctor babbitt's office in philadelphia in a day or so and the result should be known by the early part of next week continued <).\ third page during the discussion of the rule it was found that there was a way to sidestep the restriction and lots of that sidestepping would be done during the early games it was pointed out that a coach could act as assistant linesman and hold one end of the 10-yard sticks in this manner he could follow the play even better than before as there would be oppocrtunitie's to get out on the field of play when it became necessary to meajsure the distance for the first down and he could note the condition of the men from close range while it was decided thai this was in a way contrary to the spirit of the rule it would be to an entering class of 247 men dr drinker addressed his remarks at the forty-ninth annual opening exercises of the university which were held in the chapel on wed nesday afternoon .. the president outlined to the men what they have come to college for and gave a com plete discussion of the great euro pean war and its resultant effects professor thornburg also gave a lecture to the freshmen and was followed by h a brown 15 who explained the honor system to the new men the men entering this year were attired in their oldest clothes all prepared for the great struggle with the sophomores which took place as ■they were leaving the building members of the second-year class lined the paths and forced the freshmen to show the green show their ability at walking like a bear hopping like a grasshopper and doing other ignominious stunts finally the freshmen got through the line and were organized after piaxton was elected to assume the duties of temporary president then followed the annual banner rush on taylor field the sopho mores were outnumbered by far but strategy won the game for them the first-year men were confused and at the end of the five minutes bad not a hand on the flag they were then given a chance to get off the field closely followed by the second-year men the substitutes for all wars mr walters delivers address at y m c a meeting on sunday the first y m c a meeting of the 1914-15 college year was held in drown hall on sunday evening at 6.30 o'clock raymond walters registrar presenting an instructive talk on substitutes for war there were more than a hundred students in attendance and all voted an entertaining and helpful evening bodine 15 rendered a much-appre ciated vocal solo mr walters began by presenting without comment the case of advo cates of war he cited the asser tions in the book germany and the next war written in 1911 in which general bernhardi an emi nent prussian military officer de clared that war is a biological a christian anil a moral necessity this attitude which has been pre sented along with an enormous and scientific kriegs-literatur in eu rope maintains that war is a part of the biological struggle for exis tence and that nature demands it referring to the important vol ume of brooks adams the new empire mr walters discusses the fact there set forth that wars even the triumph's of alexander who is regarded as simply sighing for more worlds to conquer — had an econom ic cause ; in alexander's case the cause was his problem of consoli dating avenues of communication taking up these declarations of advocates of war the speaker de
