1917 has advantage at lehigh — this is a record breaking number for one season large number of varsity base ball men — excellent track material indians confident have won two games in this sea son's schedule george t fonda head of the safety and welfare department of the bethlehem steel company will be the speaker at the y m c a meeting this sunday evening at 6.30 o'clock in drown hall in his talk mr fonda will give a detailed ac count of the work of his depart ment and of similar depaitaients throughout the country pointing out the importance of that phase of an engineer's work in any branch of the profession meeting of the musical clubs a joint rehearsal of the glee and mandolin clubs of the university was held on wednesday at 4 p m in drown hall the outlook for the coming year is very bright and the success of the approaching season to judge by the spirit shown at this rehearsal wall far surpass that of previous years this is due to the fact that a num ber of trips have been arranged for this year about thirty candidates reported for the glee club and among them were some new men of marked abil ity all seemed enthusiastic with tihe prospect before them and gave evidence of a desire to do the best possible work tihe turn-out for the mandolin club however was very poor ; on ly five men reporting to the leader thorp he requests that all men in college who possess any skill with the mandolin put in an appearance at the next meeting there are more than five mem in college who can play a mandolin and to the rest of them be it stated that right here is a chance to do something to bet ter lehigh the second football game of the season will be played to-morrow afternoon on taylor field at 3.00 o'clock when lehigh meets the car lisle indians on the gridiron the varsity has shown much progress during the week though the losses through injuries will be felt coach keady has been shifting the men with favorable results new plays have been tried out with varied successes grumbach's injury in the f and m game and hoban's slight injury during practice on tuesday have resulted in a general shake-up in both the backfield and the lime ho ban's injury is not considered seri ous enough to keep him out of the game on saturday good is being played at right tackle with bacon and desmond rivalling one another for the left end position should scruggs be played at right tackle hal stead will be placed at center the indian's have defeated al bright and west virginia wesleyan by comparatively low scores the absence of guyon from their line up due to his freshmen have bickley marcy and mcgrath among their candidates these men come here with a good high school record and the latter two are mem bers of the b a a they have in these men a trio that will opportunity to show their appre ciation of the founder of this great growing university the occasion being the annual observance of founder's day the address of the day will be delivered by a forceful and eloquent speaker one who will give a thoughtful talk which will typify the sentiment which every son of the brown and white ought to feel in his soul on this memorial day this person is none less than the reverend paul deschweinitz d.d of bethlehem secretary of mis sions of the moravian church t edgar shields the university organist will render some new pipe organ recitals which will be a great drawing-card in themselves at a senior class meeting held wednesday afternoon various mat ters of importance were brought up and the senior class book commit tee elected it is composed of the following men : wiegand taylor geyer hoffman and fisher the following men were nominated to collect the class dues in their res pective courses m e — bodine chem and met — glesman ;■mi ners — raine civils — search elec — fry !!._ s and b a — keves the new score-board band at game to-morrow at the request of a few r students professor hughes will again give a course in psychology intended es pecially for students in the technical courses who are not required to take psychology the course will consist of lectures and discussions with reading suggested but not re quired no credit can be given for the course the class will meet once a week in order to arrange an hour con venient to all professor hughes will meet those interested at 4 o'clock tuesday afternoon in his classroom in coppee hall orchestra men the authorities could not have chosen a better location for the new score-board which has been placed above the main entrance to taylor field it is plainly visible from all the stands and is a great help in following the ball the lehigh freshman football team lost to bethlehem prep last wednesday afternoon by the score of 7to 0 the game was hard fought throughout and showed what remarkable progress has been made on the part of the freshman team the game was lost as the re sult of a costly fumble by sommers briody of prep snatching it up and dashing thirty yards
