to all lehigh men : in the spring of 1913 major general leonard wood chief of staff of the united state army by a circular letter addressed to the presidents of all universities and colleges in the country invited in terest and participation in the move of the secretary of war and of the general staff to establish summer camps for university and college students one in the east at gettys burg and one in california at mon terey to be supervised by selected able army officers and designed to give our students the advantage of five or six weeks of open air life in camp under strict army discipline the experiment proved to be most successful 1 visited the get tysburg camp and of course had a personal interest in it as we had a good delegation of lehigh men in attendance it was in every way well managed ; the attending stu dents derived great benefit from it and the officers in charge were de lighted with the progress and effi ciency displayed by the students the young men formed an associa tion of the students reserve corps of the united states and to my sur prise elected me president of the corps at gettysburg last year there were some 61 institutions represent ed from all sections of the east at monterey 29 from the extreme west this year camps were established at burlington vermont ; luding ton michigan asheville north carolina and monterey with an attendance of 350 at burlington 114 at ludington 120 at asheville and 85 at monterey an advisory committee of uni versity and college presidents was formed last year to aid the general continued on third page indian smoker college meeting lehigh evening school the lehigh evening school was organized last thursday evening with an enrollment of thirty men the school will be in session four evenings a week monday tuesday thursday and friday the industrial committee of the y m c a is very grateful to those of the student-body who have volunteered to teach in the evening school there is however room for more teachers and any student desiring to help in this work should see professor hughes or mr whiteside the nrst smoker of the season was held in the game room of the taylor gymnasium last friday ev ening on the eve of lehigh's victory over the indians the program of the evening was well started by an appropriate selection from tihe uni versity band dr price president of the board of trustees was among those pres ent and gave the student-body a few words concerning the interest of the alumni in lehigh's athletic equip ment dr drinker followed dr price with a short talk on taylor day the quartet composed of bo dine 15 wynne 16 kresge 16 and covell 18 then rendered sev eral selections prof reiter gave a stirring speech in which he touched on the relationship of scholarship with ath letics at lehigh the spirit in the football camp and in concluding quoted several verses co-ordinate with his remarks scruggs 16 act ing captain of the football team followed with a few words concern ing the team an exhibition wrestling bout be tween coach sheridan and thomas and singing of the college songs concluded the program epitome board meeting a college meeting was held in packer hall last friday morning at 11 o'clock mr emery speaking for the faculty announced that oc tober 17th had been selected as tay lor day and that the first universi ty dance would be given that even ing in drown hall president brown of the senior class read the freshman regula tions to the incoming class l j buck 15 president of the arcadia read and explained the workings of the honor system to the student body adjournment followed sev eral announcements a photograph of the student-body was then taken in front of packer hall orchestra men last saturday lehigh handed out a 21 to 6 defeat to tne indians on taylor field it was an earned vic tory for lehigh from the start to the finish ; the result of a practical ly green team coached to mid-season form and playing headier football than their opponents only twice did the line give way under the indians onslaught once in the first period and again in the third period when calac with poo dry hit the brown and white line for four successive first downs ca lac scoring the indians lone touch down this with h broker's at tempted field goal in the second pe riod were the only chances carlisle had to score lehigh's style of play seemed to mystify the indians from the start in the second play of the game ca hall tore around left end for thirty yards and during the remainder of the game his open-field work had the redskins baffled in the second period cahall's pass of twenty yards to hoban who carried the ball forty yards for a touchdown was the stel lar feature of the period in the third period halsted showed his mettle as a backfield man carrying the ball for the second touchdown after a line plunge and a thirty-five yard run through a broken field two forwards by cahall one to sawtelle and one to maginnes add ed another touchdown to lehigh's credit the indians touchdown which followed soon afterward ended the scoring of the game to cahall too much praise can not be given not only for the man ner in which h guided the team as quarterback but also for his individ ual playing his forward-passing punting and end runs were big fac tors in determining saturday's vic tory among the new men the work of desmond halsted and maginnes stood out prominently desmond proved not only speedy in running down under punts always getting his man but also displayed good form on the second defense hal sted and maginnes both played a church reviews life of asa packer lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday october 6 1914 lehigh scalps carlisle indians lehigh's connection with national movements looking to public service letter from dr drinker to the alumni brown and white team smothers redskins and comes off field victorious by 21 to 6 score opponents were simply outclassed on saturday morning october 3 1914 in packer memorial chapel the thirty-fifth annual celebration of founder's day took place in commemoration of hon asa pack er founder of lehigh university the chapel was filled with students members of the faculty and trus tees of the university and also many citizens of the bethlehems and other cities president drinker was in charge of the exercises rev f w beek man rector of the church of the nativity of south bethlehem read the scripture lesson and offered a prayer mr t edgar shields or ganist of the university rendered steere's pastorale on the organ the oration of the da 7 was deliver ed by rev paul deschweinitz d d bethlehem secretary of mis sions of the moravian church the principal theme of dr de schweinitz's speech outside of the relating of the life and doings of the hon asa packer was the men tioning of the very friendly rela tions existing between lehigh uni versity and the moravian college another of his subjects treated was the idea that no education is com plete that ignores tihe religious and spiritual element dr desehwein itz called attention to the fact that probably lebigh's university stand ards by forming a theological school in affiliating with moravian college and leonard hall in some practical way might be raised to meet with the standard's of several other of the large universities many of his ideas dwelt on the technical student as especially seen at lehigh
