important meeting of v m c a bodies held last sunday princeton defeats lehigh court men in opening game vol xxxiv no 22 the brown and white secures an early lead but second half attack of tigers accounts for victory huddle system abandoned section a taylor hall is victor in enthusiastic indoor track meet the hon john l stewart former lehigh professor and now serving on pennsylvania public service com mission is principal speaker at banquet joint meeting of boards held for discussion of year's program new piano seventy present at annual meet long shots win game mustard & cheese gains headway medals awarded dancing practice for chorus candidates being held weekly trips certain the honorable john l stew are of the public service com mission of pennsylvania chose as his topic the public ser vice commission its organiza tion functions and develop ment for an address delivered before the engineer's club of the lehigh valley on last fri day night the meeting was held in drown hall and there were approximately seventy en gineers present as well as sev eral guests the majority of those present were from the cities throughout the lehigh ing opportunities meanwhile foot scored his third goal of the evening and evans and mc cabe added another pair there by placing the game in the tig er victory column long distance shooting by princeton sent lehigh down to defeat out of ten baskets caged by wittmer's men six came from beyond the middle of the floor the athletes from prince ton showed uncanny aim from this zone sending their wonder ful shots over the heads of the tion of 200 colleges illustrated talk annual meet in a fast game character ized by much roughness and several questionable decisions the lehigh court team received an almost unexpected setback at the hands of princeton last sat urday evening on the tiger's floor by a score of 26-20 although the lehigh quintet led at half time they failed to come up to expectations the nervousness which prevailed and the altering of last year's line-up due to the graduation of the flashy weinstein proved deciding factors in the defeat after a poor start during which lister replaced hesse who started at right guard the brown and white spurted and gained a lead of 15-13 at the conclusion of the first twenty minutes of play sensational baskets by princeton kept them at the heels of their opponents baskets by smith and schaub were instrumental in giving lehigh its lead abandoning the huddle sys tem of giving signals the princetonians set a faster pace in the second half and manag ed to tie the score at twenty all with but five minutes of time left it was at this juncture that the brown and white of fense faltered long enough to prevent them from taking ad vantage of several bright scor valley although some of the en gineers were from more distant points including stroudsburg and philadelphia commissioner stewart was formerly professor of econo mics at lehigh and was head of the department of business administration for some time in introducing mr stewart prof h m ullman who was chairman of the meeting said that the object of the club was the promotion of civic well-be ing and that therefore the ad dress would be of intense in terest to the engineers com missioner stewart began his ad dress by emphasizing the fact that there are many citizens who know very little about the functioning of the state govern ment and especially of the jur isdiction of the public service commission through the courtesy of vice president h edgar lewis and francis dykes the engineers were conducted through the le high and saucon plants of the bethlehem steel works on fri day afternoon under the per sonal supervision of major w o hearsey after this inspec tion tour the engineers con vened to drown hall where andy buchanan assistant alumni secretary entertained continued on page two new men initiated by sophomore club lt col deems to inspect r o t c prominent officer to make preliminary rating in spection this week honorary society is com posed of sophs promin ent in univ athletics the mustard and cheese dramatic association started its season off with enthusiasm this year chorus practice has been held every wednesday night in drown hall since the begin ning of the year under the per sonal direction of president ridsdale and business manager pursel bill scarlett adver tising manager has been work ing hard on the road schedule in cooperation with the bus iness manager and engage ments have already been made for giving performances in philadelphia allentown and bethlehem engagements are also practically assured for washington new york and wilkes-barre the chorus will be picked by ned wayburn personally about one month before the produc tion is staged all those can didates who have been coming out consistently for the chorus have a very good chance of making it as only those who have practiced conscientiously will be chosen mr darcy from the ned wayburn studio will coach the show again this year he put on the produc tion last year in such a capable manner that the mustard and cheese show was regarded as continued on page three lehigh university calendar important event banquet given a joint meeting of the ad visory board and the senior cabinet of the y m c a was held last sunday afternoon at 2 : 30 in drown hall the first joint meeting this year the meeting was specially call ed for the mid-year reports and for routine business which re quired the action of the two bodies the first order of business was the president's report which was given by irving miles and which included all the activities of the local organ ization since the installation of the present senior cabinet last may its content covered the work of the v on the hand book organization of the fresh men freshman week deputa tions socials and other activi ties which are familiar to the entire student body the main point about the report was a recommendation that the university contem plate the erection of a new dor mitory to accommodate the in creased number of men now at lehigh and so strengthen the unison of the student body in college affairs *• the second and major point brought out in this report was the question of whether the lo cal organization would con tinue to affiliate with the state and national y m c a.'s it was quite forcibly brought out that the program of the two mentioned bodies is entirely different from that of the le high v and in many cases radically so the views which are held by national leaders in the mother organization toward military training in the colleges could not be reconciled with those of the y m c a here nor with those of the adminis tration of the university pas sages were quoted from the literary digest and the na tion showing that college v's were mismated to city and rail road v's and the old trend of continued on page two much rivalry was shown by the members of the non-frater nity living groups in the inter dormitory gym meet held in the upper gym last thursday afternoon this is the first time that anything of the sort has been tried here and the enthu siasm shown by the turn-out and the competition in the dif ferent events was excellent each one of the dorms had from two to five men entered in each event and some of the marks made by the winners were of genuine quality when the smoke of battle had cleared away section a of taylor hall was found to be the victor the first event on the pro gram was the running high jump the winner of this event was a dark horse in the form of a frosh clearing the bar at five feet three inches gared barnes of section a beat kel ly bowler of section b charlie mccombs of section d and george turn of section e who finished in a tie for sec ond place one inch below the winning mark after the high jump the strong-armed men did their stuff in the pull-ups red gilmore of section b and al davis of section e chinned the bar nineteen times each to fin ish in a tie for first bill leadlein of section d was next with seventeen while stevie stevenson and lou sudholtz of section a and george thum of price hall tied for fourth with sixteen each the push-up championship went to challis britton of sec continued on page three barnes of section a again showed himself to be of cham pionship calibre by winning the standing broad-jump with a leap well over nine feet mor ris kanaly's protege kelly bowler of section b hopped into second place while art moliter of section a and hap snavely of section b finished third and fourth respectively nevins wins place on soccer eleven wrestling meet to be held in jan princeton coach , awards le high star position on honorary team competitions open to all stu dents for purpose of find ing new material second time prizes offered the department of physical education is sponsoring an im portant wrestling tournament on saturday january 8 1927 this meet is open to every one in the university including varsity men it will be ably conducted by billy sheridan and three prizes of gold silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each class this is a wonderful opportunity to gain wrestling laurels it is hoped that some valuable ma terial may be unearthed every body in college is aware of the dire need of heavyweight wrest lers the fact that varsity men are eligible should not collegiate eleven for the eas tern intercollegiate soccer as sociation by coach albert niess of the princeton soccer team when he announced his team last week this is quite an hon or for red and is ample proof of his excellent work during the past season coach nies made an innova tion this year naming three coaches whose work of build ing up good combinations from only mediocre material he con sidered outstanding this is the first time that all-collegiate coaches have been named on the selections they are mcpeet of haverford touchton of continued on page three the second annual student congress of the national stu dent federation was held at the university of michigan for a period of three days beginning december 2 bud nutting president of the arcadia rep resented lehigh at this under graduate congress at which the problems relative to important college affairs and attitudes were discussed a brief sum mary of the proceedings of the convention follows dr meiklejohn dr duggan president maccracken and president little all spoke at ann arbor recognizing the ne cessity for educational experi ment each pointing out differ ent lines for such experiment and each emphasizing the im portance of student contribu tion to it in other words they supported the chief purpose for which the federation exists the student's part in formulating the educational process it is furthermore noteworthy that official representatives from 200 student bodies throughout the country gathered at the con gress ratified the constitution of the federation and provided for its permanent existence but such evidence strong as it may be cannot in the last anal ysis be considered final there is in the first place the intangible theory of the conference as a means of com munication and contact to mu tual advantage the exchange of viewpoint of problems be tween men from princeton le land stanford and ohio or be tween a great university like michigan and a small college like franklin and marshall is eminently worth while subject to the conditions stated above broadening of viewpoint and of understanding and the good fellowship which accompanies it are enough by themselves to justify such a congress as that held by the n f s a there are in the second place four very tangible advan tages which the federation has offered at this congress com missions sat on friday after noon avering to discuss the cur riculum teachers athletics continued on page four the university r o t c unit is to be inspected this week by lieutenant colonel clarence deems jr field ar tillery united states army who is in charge of r o t c affairs for the third corps area the object of his visit at this time is to determine whether lehigh is to be recom mended as worthy of inspec tion by the war department for distinguished college rat ing the university now has such a rating and the opportun ity of retaining this distinction rests largely upon the impres sion the unit makes at this time although the rating is not awarded until the spring lieutenant colonel clarence deems jr is in charge of r o t c affairs at headquar ters third corps area balti more maryland and is a mem ber of the staff of major gen eral douglas mac arthur continued on page four he graduated from the unit ed states military academy at west point new york in the class of 1900 and went to the philippines in 1902 particul arly he saw considerable active service in the island of mind anao participating in a num ber of engagements against hos tile moros in the interior of that island while a lieutenant in a mountain battery his ser vices were such that he was specially mentioned in dis patches returning to the unit the phi club an honorary society consisting of lehigh's most distinguished second year men has conferred the honor of membership to ten men of the class of 29 to take the place of the retiring juniors the list of the men who will inject new blood into the soci ety through the change of mem in itiating the members into the society last year's group told what election to the phi club meant and recommended a plan of procedure for coming devel opments although already ac quainted with the importance of this honorary society each sophomore by the end of the evening knew what to live up to and how to go about it continued on page four the men elected last monday have essentially during their freshman year accomplished something to warrant approval in university athletics in oth the civils held their reg ular monthly meeting last thursday evening in the phy sics lecture room the speak er of the evening was robert e peary a member of the class of 27 bob chose as his subject the american museum green land expedition of which he was a member in the capacity of chief engineer the party left rye new york on june 20 1926 and re turned to the same place on oc tober 3 1926 the head of the expedition was george palmer putnam of the putnam pub lishing company n v and the ship was under the command of captain robert a bartlett the object of the expedition was to collect specimens of the marine and animal life of the arctic regions and in this they were singuarly successful a great variety of specimens was secured including a very fine collection of the narwhal family walrus polar bears and a great number of birds of different kinds the general procedure in the case of the larger animals was to kill them then take plaster casts of their bodies the animal was then skinned and his skin and skele ton was preserved some of the smaller specimens were pre served whole by pickling in al cohol a pair of baby polar bears was lassoed by carl dumrud a montana cowboy who accompanied the expedi tion these were brought back alive peary's talk was supplement ed by miniature moving pic tures taken by himself during the expedition these evoked considerable interest as an added attraction re freshments consisting of ice cream and cake were served the meeting adjourning at 10 o'clock peary's talk was most interesting and was certainly enjoyed by all present but the attendance was not as large as it should have been it is hop ed that in the future more civils will make party left rye new york on june 20 1926 and re turned to the same place on oc tober 3 1926 the head of the expedition was george palmer putnam of the putnam pub lishing company n v and the ship was under the command of captain robert a bartlett the object of the expedition was to collect specimens of the marine and animal life of the arctic regions and in this they were singuarly successful a great variety of specimens was secured including a very fine collection of the narwhal family walrus polar bears and a great number of birds of different kinds the general procedure in the case of the larger animals was to kill them then take plaster casts of their bodies the animal was then skinned and his skin and skele ton was preserved some of the smaller specimens were pre served whole by pickling in al cohol a pair of baby polar bears was lassoed by carl dumrud a montana cowboy who accompanied the expedi tion these were brought back alive peary's talk was supplement ed by miniature moving pic tures taken by himself during the expedition these evoked considerable interest as an added attraction re freshments consisting of ice cream and cake were served the meeting adjourning at 10 o'clock peary's talk was most interesting and was certainly enjoyed by all present but the attendance was not as large as it should have been it is hop ed that in the future more civils will make
