dr drinker messrs taylor johns ton warriner prof stewart and h a brown 15 speak this day was set aside by the trustees of the university as a day of commemoration for all that has been done for lehigh by our dis tinguished alumnus chas l tay lor the morning has been devoted to the inspection of the gymnasium taylor field and the stadium by vis iting alumni and guests and at 12 o'clock luncheon was served by cowdery in the commons at the university to the student body the alumni faculty trustees and guests from a distance the pro gram called for addresses at the close of the luncheon from dr drinker who presided from the president of the senior class on be half of the student body in pre senting a loving cup from the stu dent body to mr taylor and of course from mr taylor whom dr drinker presented in a few appro priate words paying proper tribute to mr taylor as an alumnus of the university and as a man of large affairs further addresses were made by mr archibald johnston 89 on behalf of the alumni by professor sttvvanl on behalf of the faculty and by mr s d warri ner 90 on behalf of the trustees it will be remembered by old foot ball men that mr johnston and mr warriner were famous football stars in their day the luncheon was enlivened by the cheering of the student body and by songs of the glee club the singing being commenced by the charley taylor song a paraphrase of the old scot tish prince charley song fired at mr taylor first by the glee club and then by the entire student body the luncheon was closed with the singing of the alma mater after which all hands will adjourn to the football game with carnegie tech a peculiarly fitting combination in that mr taylor is a trustee of both the carnegie institute of technolo gy and of lehigh the day will close with a university dance at drown memorial hall at 8 p m the charley taylor cup the big athletic event on taylor day will be the football game be tween lehigh and the carnegie in stitute of technology called for 3 o'clock p m on taylor field lehigh's very credible showing at yale last saturday and the fac f that none of the varsity men wen seriously injured make the chances for a brown and white victory tlit very brightest the team is in good condition the line-up will proba bly be the same as that of last sat urday the fact that lehigh has not re cently played carnegie tech makes it difficult to figure the comparative strength of the opposing teams from the game the pittsburghers have been playing so far this season there will be a fine exhibition at the saturday afternoon contest greeting to mr taylor every man enrolled in the uni versity who could get away from his classes yesterday afternoon was present at the station when the trail carrying mr taylor arrived at 3.34 o'clock the lehigh ben e facto r was cheered again and again by the students mr taylor was taken by automobile to the home of presi dent drinker where he is to be the guest of dr and mrs drinker dur ing his stay here y m c a announcement dr j w richards professor of metallurgy is scheduled as princi pal speaker at the y m c a meet ing to be held in drow m hall to morrow evening at 6.30 o'clock his talk wall be on some live topic and a large attendance is expected the following is a copy of the inscription on the cup presented to mr taylor by the student body at the luncheon : presented to charles lewis taylor 76 by the students of lehigh university in token of the love in which he is held by them for his devotion to our alma mater and in further evidence of the res pect and esteem felt for him as an engineer and business man of great ability as a citizen of marked public spirit and as a man who has given continued life-long and generous evidence of his love for his fellow men october 17 1914 on the reverse side of the cup is a beautiful reproduction of the sculptured design of the athlete just over the main entrance to the gym nasium charles lewis taylor was born in philadelphia on april 3 1857 a son of the late mr and mrs john d taylor his father was promi nently identified with the sugar re lining industry and was treasurer of the pennsylvania railroad com pany from 1874 to the time of his death in 1886 mr taylor prepared for college at the rugby academy 15th and locust streets and entered lehigh in september 1872 he was grad uated in 1876 as valedictorian of his class with the degree of engi neer of mines mr taylor's first employment was secured the day after his graduation with henry s drinker in his engineering office ; and he and dr drinker have ever since been closely associated as friends and as co-workers for le high following his engagement with dr drinker mr taylor be came assistant chemist and was subsequently made assistant super intendent of blast furnaces of the cambria iron company at johns town pa from the very beginning of his business career mr taylor's force of character and energetic tempera ment brought him into prominence in 1880 he went to pittsburgh as chemist for the pittsburgh besse mer steel company and m 1882 be came superintendent of the com pany which position he retained af ter the company was merged into the carnegie interests for the fol lowing three years he was superin tendent of the great homestead steel works he ably filled this important position until 1887 and was then succeeded by charles m schwab the following two years he was general manager of the hartman steel company another carnegie plant and from 1890 to 1902 he was assistant secretary of his early connection with the de signing as well as the manufacture of a steel suitable for steel car con struction an industry that has grown to wonderful proportions was one of his principal achieve ments representing pioneer work of an original character and a com prehensive foresight into the future requirements of the steel business mr taylor takes great interest in and devotes much time and mon ey to the kingsiey house associa tion a home for children located in pittsburgh of which he is presi dent and a director he has built for this association a summer home for fresh air work called the lillian home which accommo dates 250 children at a time and more than 2000 children taken from the slums are entertained there each summer lie has also built a con valescent home for women and chil dren with a capacity of 70 patients mr taylor accepted membership in the board of trustees of lehigh university a few months after the in addition to actively adminis tering some of the great trusts cre ated by mr carnegie mr taylor is the secretary of the carnegie veteran association one of the trustees of the carnegie library and institute a director of the car negie technical schools a director of the western pennsylvania insti tute for the blind ; he is also inter ested in other well-established cor porations and institutions he is a man of social instincts being a member of the union league of philadelphia the union the du quesne and the country clubs of pittsburgh the santa barbara club of california and other leading so cial organizations he is promi nently identified with the shadyside presbyterian church of pittsburgh continued on second page carnegie phipps & company ltd in 1893 he was promoted to the responsible position of assistant to the president of the carnegie steel company ltd with the general su pervision over the operation of all works in 1901 he gave up his act ive work in the carnegie company remaining only in an advisory ca pacity but giving special attention to the organization and operations of the carnegie benefit and pen sion system mr carnegie on retirement from business in 1901 selected mr tay lor as chairman of the carnegie relief fund a beneficent scheme made possible by mr carnegie's gift of 4,000,000 in 5 per cent bonds to take care of the sixty thousand employes of the carnegie plants in case of accident death or old age this was subsequently merged into the united states steel and carnegie pension fund a trust of 12.000000 the income of which is applicable for the superannuated employes of all the various inter ests of the steel corporation mr taylor was also selected by mr carnegie as president of the hero fund commission a trust fund of 5,000,000 mr taylor's long serv ice in prominent and important pla ces in the conduct of the carnegie interests have well fitted him for the duties of these positions probably no single individual con nected with the steel trade between 1880 and 1890 did more in the practical direction of supplanting wrought iron with soft steel than did mr taylor his thorough knowledge of chemistry and the metallurgy of steel enabled him while superintendent of the home stead works to be about the first one to produce successfully soft steel for the manufacture of pipe nails ship plate and structural steel bethlehem pa saturday october 17 i ( u4 the brown and white lehigh university vol xxii celebration of taylor day alumni and guests dine with faculty and student body in university dining hall ciias l taylor 76 sketch of mr taylor's life continued on third page the founder's day sports on wednesday resulted in a complete route of the freshman forces by losing the football and baseball events the class of 1918 lose the last chance to win the privilege to wear colored socks and neckties during the present college year it was a hard-fought battle to the very end and not until the last ball was thrown was the result certain the events were all interesting and fairly fought out football game the first event was the football game in which the sophomores were the victors by a 13 to 0 score during the first three periods the freshmen outplayed the sophs and twice had the ball to the sophomore 5-yd line but could not push it over the sophs scored in the third pe riod after blocking a freshman punt and recovering the ball on the freshman 5-yd lie after two un successful attempts to pierce the line the ball was carried over by kan iall the midgcl sophomore quarterback price kicked the goal the second tally was the result of the recovery of a fumble by pons who carried the ball to the 15-yd line before downed from here randall shot a beautiful pass over the line to edson price failed to football and baseball victories for 1917 track goes to 1918 sophomores win class of 1917 wins majority of sports and 1918 mourns a year founder's day sports no 8 the carnegie tech game excellent speeches
