that could defeat perm state between the halves the student body poured out of the stand and led by the band engaged in a snake dance from goal post to goal post then they formed in a big l and gave cheers and songs caiiall stellar player cahall was plainly the star of the day's game and it was due to him that the blue and white team was sent back to state college with its first defeat of the year he was responsible for 12 o-f the total 20 points some of his more notice able exploits may be enumerated : field goal from 30-yard line in the first period ; 40-yard run for touch down after scooping up fumble in the second quarter ; field goal from 47-yard line in the fourth period ; an average of forty-five yards for punts the final three points which brought the score up to 20 were made by cahall in one of the great est goals ever kicked by a lehigh player it went as true as a rifle shot and when it fell safely over the west goal thousands of brown and white rooters arose in the stands and cheered cahall the le high brickley until the next kick off rest of team there were other players who helped to wreck big bill hollen back's team but the name of cahall will ever be lauded here for the magnificent part he took in the ov erthrow of the blue and white who came here prepared to win especial ly after having tied harvard and not having been scored on in any other game this season hoban played a remarkable game and was responsible for most of the lehigh yard-gains he was in ev ery play and always came up smil the university of pennsylvania football squad passed through this city on thursday enroute to michi gan where they played the wolver ines on saturday the squad was in charge of coaches geo brooks blondy wallace and by dick son and trainer pat dwyer coaches wallace and dickson for merly were coaches at lehigh and many of their friends greeted them between trains at the union station last friday morning dr c j hunt u of p 05 associate chief medical inspector of the state health department lectured in the chapel on typhoid fever and pre ventive medicine the lecture was excellently delivered and was of particular interest to the student body as it covered in detail the re cent flash of typhoid at lehigh causes of typhoid dr hunt first enumerated the kinds of germs found in the human intestinal tract and then showed the adaptation of certain persons to act as a host for certain of these germs these persons who become hosts for these germs are called carriers about two to five per cent of the persons recovering from the disease retain a small number of the germs and then become carriers it was found by gruber that when a serum is put in the blood of a person whose blood contains ty phoid bacteria there is a character istic reaction which has become known as the wide reaction this principle was applied to the recent epidemic at lehigh by dr hunt and he showed how minutely the investigation was carried out and how every food source and the water sources were found to be in no way infected with typhoid bac teria the investigation investigation showed that all those students contracting typhoid had dined at the commons and the infection in every case started in the interval between september 16 25 it has been shown that the bac teria must be in the food or water taken by the person the fact that one of the waiters was the means of spreading the bac teria was shown to be out of the question but in the kitchen there was a different condition here any one of the employees could easily infect the food which went to every person dining at the com mons the blood test was made use of then and two employes showed a positive reaction the history of one of these men showed that he had what his phy sician called malarial fever in 1912 and again in 1913 the facts show ed that this had been not malarial fever but a mild case of typhoid fever and this particular person was a carrier the speaker then took up the question of the processes of injec tion for the prevention of diseases he brought out clearly the differ ence between serum and vaccine as follows : vaccine is dead bacteria in the human body asking it to make its own defenses while serum is the injection of defenses brought about in other animals for ex ample the typhoid vaccine has been used on the students at lehigh as a prevention against the disease the vaccine or dead micro-organ isms are introduced into a man's body and there start to build up de fenses against the live germs of ty phoid fever on the other hand serum is the extract from other ani mals which have been injected with this same vaccine the differences in action is that the serum is much more active and faster but at the same time is not so lasting perm state came down to lehigh saturday morning with about three hundred rooters a band of thirty three pieces and a football team the same evening they departed for home with black-winged victory perched on their banners it was a hard tussle which was witness ed by about eight thousand people and it was only by keeping pound ing and sheer hard work that the brown and white were able to give perm state their first defeat of the season by a score of 20 to 7 the largest crowd it was the largest crowd that has ever been seen in the taylor sta dium and it surely was a good test people started to take their seats an hour and a half before the game was to be called and an incessant stream poured in the gates long after the whistle had blown the boy-scout ushers ably handled the crowd remodeled team it was a great victory ev erybody had known the reputed strength of the blue and white and little did they expect such an overwhelming victory it was a new lehigh team that was sent on the grid-iron chenoweth the sterl ing little quarter was playing his first game of this season and he worked as if he had been in every contest so far cah all the man with the mighty toe had been switched to half and the change seemed to work out well tate was there again and managed to hold the much her aided lamb and frank green was once more in har ness it was known before the game that mattern would not be able to get in the game and of course that detracted a great deal from the hopes of winning great cheering the cheering at this game was of the highest order state rooters were in the north stand and aided by a sterling military band of thir ty-three pieces produced some yell ing that was enough to inspire spi rit'in the most hardened team and the lehigh rooters were there also ing his bucks through the line were more than could be asked for or expected the nearest that he came to being injured was in the second half when he was tackled so hard that his trousers were torn off the players all gathered a round him and a pinch pair of moleskins was fitted on the burly halfback who was acting captain for this game sawtelle the veteran end played a good game and always had his eyes glued on the ball as did all the rest of the lehigfh players it was due to his eagle-eye that he was able to recover a fumble and ran forty-five yards for lehigh's second touchdown state did a lot of fumbling and the way the brown and white players followed the ball was spectacular and showed that they w r ere well-coached on the perm state plays easy opponents only twice was perm state dan gerous and that was in the last five minutes of play they did manage to push over a touchdown and then came right down the field again for another but this time lehigh held like a stone-wall on the 7-yard line for downs and prevented further scoring how it happened the blue and white players were the first on the field and then fol lowed coach keady's men who were wearing their new uniforms and had been numbered captain hoban avon the toss and selected the west goal as a background state tried a short kick which scruggs scooped up on lehign's 40 yard line it was the first of state's trick plays that failed and others were destined to be broken up later in the game the lehigh rooters were given a thrill about the middle of the first period when lamb dropped back for a placement goal it was a fake play and james shot a forward pass to the right side of him left-end green grabbed the ball and dashed forty yards before being downed on continued on second page juniors notice an important meeting of the ju nior
