the first smoker given by the y m c a was without a doubt one of the most successful held this sea son the attendance was very large and those who came out spent a most enjoyable evening speech es were made by dr george orton scrap johnson earle twining bishop talbot and nick pens and a vocal duet was rendered by doubs and co veil of 18 the band was there and added much to the entertainment scrap johnson was the first to address the fellows and he spoke of how different the team was now from the team which represented the brown and white when he was a student in his day he said la fayette had the best team and easily defeated lehigh but that now ttoere is a different tale to tell dr george orton was the second speaker and he could not praise lehigh's showing on the grid-iron enough he writes for the football guide and he said that he intended . : • ! high the write-up she de served in the next issue bishop talbot spoke of the y m c a and its work lie claimed that the y m c a was started in england for the purpose of keep ing the young men off the streets and to give them higher ideals he urged every man to join the organ ization and get into the active part of it his appeal was accepted by many of those present and quite a few new members were added to the roll of the y m c a mr twining said in his talk that he hoped athletic relations would be renewed between swarthmore and lehigh coach keady was unable to at tend having been called away on business and connie mac was de tained at home with boils but nick pons spoke and urged the boys to come out and support the team at the booster meetings franklin and marshall had a rep resentative here he said that in his opinion the big four consisted of yale princeton lehigh and franklin and marshall and from the yelling of the crowd one was suie that there were others of the same opinion mr frey made sev eral an noun cements and the smoker closed with a band selection big banquet villanova's right end for the most brilliant run of the contest attempts to gain through the blue and whie failing cahall drop ped back for a field goal but the ball dropped short and fell into the arms of frazer who fumbled a banquet to-morrow night in allentown following a box party at the orpheum theatre take car leaving five points at 7 o'clock candidates notice all candidates for the brown and white will meet in drown hall wednesday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock absence will be taken as an indication that the candidate has dropped from the competition in a game which showed a com plete reversal of form on the part of lehigh the team representing the college of the brown and white was able to send villanova to de feat after a hard struggle and only by a score of 10 to 0 it had been expected that the con test would be an easy one for the lehigh eleven the line-up at the start of the game was composed to a large extent of second-string men but before the referee's whistle call ed time the same team was on the grid-iron which will be pitted a gainst lafayette this saturday the game was uninteresting from the start until the finish and indeed the score might v/ell be said to be cahall 9 villanova 0 the scores were made by a field goal and a lone touchdown with a goal kicked by hoban it was impossible for the brown and white to get through the strong villanova line or even around their ends in the first half they tried time and time again to push the ball over for a touchdown or to get in to position for a drop kick but all to no avail it was wasted energy a sorry crowd of more than three thousand people had nothing to say between the second and third periods the glooms had entered the field and the hopes of the brown and white rooters were dashed when they saw how futile were their heroes efforts against the de termined stands taken by the villa nova aggregation but the second half had better hope tom keady had talked to his men and they were fighting mad they filed out on the field with de termined faces with minds made up that the blue and white could not cross their goal-line and that they would not allow the honor of le high to be dragged in the dust by opposing team villanova had much strength and prevented lehigh from scoring in three periods although cahall had two chances to score field goals his tries were hurried too much each time as lehigh's line would not afternoon at 3 o'clock inspect methods of mining and handling various ores the class in senior economic ge ology made an extensive inspection trip of the new jersey zinc com pany's property at franklin fur nace n j on friday and satur day of last week the party including professor eckfelt and mr bartlett left here friday morning at seven o'clock they were met at franklin furnace by dr miller who had gone to pat erson n j on thursday for the purpose of collecting minerals to add to the university's collection the mill and the methods of handling the ore were studied on friday morning in the afternoon the class walked to sterling hill where the company is sinking a new shaft this shaft at the present time has been sunk to a depth of about six hundred feet an old shaft called the parker shaft and some of the old open pit mines here have been abandoned on friday evening an opportuni ty was given to see a most unique mineral collection this collection was made by a man who has been working in the mill for over forty years it contains almost all the franklin furnace minerals and is valued at about two thousand dol lars ( n saturday the party went un derground at mine hill the main workings of the company this slope which is called the fowler slope has been sunk eleven hun dred and fifty feet and is on an angle of fifty degrees with the hori zontal the class descended to the eight hundred-foot level by means of the hoist and climbed down to the ten hundred-and-fifty-foot level after observing the methods in which the ore is mined one of the party sug gested climbing to the surface and the climb of over a thousand feet was begun after the first two or three hundred feet it began to look as if some of the party would never reach the top but finally after reaching the three-hundred foot level the party went out through the old open cut and thence to the surface this open cut was where the ore was first mined and has since been abandoned it is about three hundred feet deep in the afternoon the class traced the outcrop of the ore vein on the surface franklin furnace is one of the richest mineral localities in the uni ted states there being about one hundred different minerals present during the stay there dr miller collected over fort different min erals man of which have never been found elsewhere dr miller and mr bartlett re mained at franklin furnace over saturday and sunday and were joined by messrs thompson and irwin of the geology department their time was spent in collecting minerals for the geology depart ment basketball candidates candidates for asst line prendergast made no gain on a line plunge and villanova was penalized fifteen yards mcgucken fumbled on an attempted kick and fred green recovered the ball ho ban
