yale gains victory over strong lehigh team in sec ond half practice games in bethlehems and daily practices prepare team for game on saturday vacancies in 115-lb and 135-lb classes due to illness of varsity men the basketball season will open on december 12th with moravian college and in view of the nearness of this date coach muthart is push ing the squad as much as possible in an effort to put a good team on the floor at that time the presence of f w green and kirkpatrick of last year's team on the floor this week has given a much brighter aspect to the out look geyer richards dynan and crichton of last year's squad are showing up well and also some of the new men there were about twenty-five candidates out on wednesday when coach muthart put them through a long scrimmage despite the lone tibms will be hotly contested the first game on the home floor will be with muhlenberg on decem ber 19th and by that time the local supporters of the game should see lehigh represented by a first-class team th e boar d trac k the board track which is used by the track men during the winter has been laid on the lower field it is twelve laps to the mile and has been marked off for all distances banquet of detroit alumni since the close of the football season soccer has become the chief sport of an out-of-door nature the department of physical education has been instructing the freshmen in the rudiments of the game since since the thanksgiving recess while every afternoon a squad of thirty five men report for practice in prep aration for a hard schedule to be arranged by the lehigh soccer as sociation until the beginning of the week practices were held three times a week but now as the lafayette game of december sth at easton and the game with the nativity men's club december 12th on taylor field draw near practice has become a daily occurrence the lafayette game on saturday practically marks the opening of the season's schedule the games which have been played to date have been with teams in the bethlehems and are to be classed as practice games in all the contests so far the le high team has shown good form although handicapped by an inabili ty to obtain a suitable practice field last year the lafayette team de feated the one representing 1 lehigh by a 2 to 0 score but at that time the development of soccer at le high had not reached its present stage saturday's game on march field promises to be interestingly close the team which will probably line up against lafayette is : goal jennings 1 f b tizard r f . b smith manager r h b bar clay or lehr c h b morrissey 1 h b r beard o r reynolds or hoagland i r henderson cap tain ; c f ., schulz ; i 1 lees or j beard o 1 clement inspection trip of senior civils the wrestling team is not receiv ing the support that is due to it and unless the new men do not soon re port the prospects for a winning team are very poor the illness of kirkhuff 16 and thomas 16 has left the 1154 b class and the 135-lb class open however if a new man shows up well in the 125-lb class martin 16 who wrestled at that weight last year can come down to 115-lbs the 145-lb class must al so be filled but if a good 158-lb man is found capt sawtelle 16 will wrestle at 145-lbs the 175-lb and heavy-weight classes are also open at the present time there are but a few men out and most of these are trying for the lighter classes there are plenty of places still open and they are not restrict ed to either the heavier or the light er classes but there are chances for men of all weights wrestling has done much for football among the collegiate wrestlers of the 158-lb class who were successful on the gridiron this fali are verger halfback of perm state ; gallogy tackle on cornell ; tucker the univ of penna full back broadfoot who played back for the navy mummert the la fayette tackle and sawtelle le high's star end one year of wrest ling boosted ballin of princeton from the scrubs to the all-ameri can team however wrestling is not only beneficial to football men but it also has features that should appeal to others whether they are connected with any other branch of activity or not now that the football season has ended billy sheridan the coach is devoting all his time and energy in rounding out a team suitable to represent lehigh but more men are needed and billy can't make a team without the material prac tices are held every afternoon at 4 o'clock in the wrestling room of the gymnasium which is fitted out with all the required wrestling equip ment private lockers and showers y m c a program the fall inspection trip of the senior civil class was taken to philadelphia on tuesday and wed nesday november 24th and 25th the grade crossing elimination work being pursued by the phila delphia & reading railway was first seen under the guidance of mr s t wagner asst chief en gineer of the road the cramp shipyards were visited on tuesday afternoon theater parties were indulged in at night wednesday morning the american bridge com pany's pencoyd shops w r ere thor oughly inspected i o st john 12 guiding the party the last point visited was the queen lane filtration plant which comprises both slow and rapid sand filtration systems sixteen students and three mem bers of the faculty composed the party sanitary swimming pool the detroit alumni whose motto is : small but lively were so sure of the result of the lafayette game that they held a previously planned banquet at the edelweiss cafe saturday night november 21st in detroit to celebrate the vic tory the score arrived by tel egram during the salad course thanks to professor george beck twenty-one lehigh men gathered together to do honor to the 1914 football team and its successful sea son the good old songs were sung several yells were given and a new song by h w porter 12 was in troduced during the course of the evening the speaker of the even ing was n c banks 93 who gave a most interesting talk on the war he having just returned from eng land at the end of the banquet a meet ing was held for the purpose of electing a committee to plan an easter banquet and to get the names addresses and business con engineering the new song and a new toast both by the same author follow : sophomores notice the lehigh university supply bureau has just placed on sale a new book of views which is indeed a credit to the college it is not to be compared with the old ones which were made up a great many years ago by a man who had no idea of photographic perception it is a large volume in size bound with brown paper and held together with brown and white silk cord the cover design is a photographic reproduction of the campus as seen from packer hall and as are all the pictures in the book splendid all the pictures are printed in brown ink by an expensive process included in the book are the fol lowing views : drown hall taylor gymnasium taylor field and sta dium packer memorial church the library packer hall fritz engineering laboratory chemistry and metallurgical laboratory will iams hall e b coxe mining lab oratory physics building coppee hall engine laboratory taylor hall commons die alte brauerei and a campus view the university has already pur chased several hundred of the thou sand copies which mr ashbaugh ordered and will distribute them a mong different preparatory schools the the various sporting editors in reviewing the past football season william b hanna sporting edi tor of the new york sun has the following to say : the hardest thing about football except to play it well and to beat harvard is to rate the elevens at the end of the season with some close approach to satisfaotoriness one can't go deeply into reas ons lest he find himself tangled in a mesh of them hard to reconcile he must take into consideration a team's record for the season what it is capable of when at its best what certain teams have done a gainst certain other teams then rec oncile these questions as far as he can mr hanna believes that the fol lowing is a fair and reasonable ra ting of eastern teams : 1 — harvard 2 — washington and jefferson 3 — army 4 — dartmouth 5 — pittsburgh 6 — yale 7 — princeton 8 — cornell 9 lehigh 10 williams he has this to say about lehigh the lehigh eleven is entitled to come in among the first ten it hav ing lost only one game and that to yale and beat perm state which held harvard to a tie the new york sun also picks cahall for the second all-american team hanna's choice in the back field is : cahall lehigh ; barrett cornell ; and bradlee harvard the university y m c a has arranged one of the most interest ing programs of the year for this sunday evening in drown hall mr e j tattell will be the prin cipal speaker the subject being — getting most out of life mr tattell is statistician of philadel phia and in that vicinity is known as the epostle of sunshine it was with difficulty that mr tattell has been procured his engagements reaching months ahead and a treat is in store for all that attend mr tattell has recently returned from london where he visited the principal manufacturing plants and witnessed some of the thrills of the present war in addition music will be fur nished by some of the students of moravian seminary under the di rection of dr clew ell notice professor w s franklin has is sued a pamphlet which contains the detailed plan of a small combina tion swimming pool and explains how provision is made for efficient and inexpensive management of the pool he has given several lectures in the bethlehems and elsewhere explaining trie workings of this san itary swimming pool important mechanical meeting on thursday december 12th talks on ordnance and naval con struction by men from the beth lehem steel company all members of the sophomore class who desire to compete for the position of business manager of next year's epitome should hand their names to kresge 16 and re port in drown hall next wednes day afternoon december 9th at 1 ' o'clock in looking over the above record for the season we find that lehigh won eight games lost one and roll ed up a score of 167 points as a gainst the opponents 64 points for lehigh after a well fought con test at the opening of college this fall the football situation at le high was anything but bright the new material did not look promis ing and a great many of last year's men were unable to play on account of the probation rule which the fac ulty passed last spring the lehigh supporters received a big surprise on september 26th when coach keady put on the field a team which proved victorious ov er f and m the lancaster eleven was exceptionally heavy and soon afterwards showed its strength by defeating pennsylvania 10 to 0 again the lehigh rooters receiv ed a rise in prospects on october 3rd when the team defeated the in dians by the score of 21 to 6 too much credit cannot be given to coach keady and his assistants for developing such an exceptional team from what was practically a green squad although lehigh lost to yale on october 10th the brown and white team really outplayed the yale elev en in the first half the score at the end of that period being lehigh 3 yale 0 in the second half yale practically put a fresh team on the field which beat lehigh 20 to 3 on charlie taylor day october 24th lehigh again showed her form by defeating carnegie tech 24 to 20 in this game there was a great deal of fumbling but as a whole the team showed a marked improvement over the week pre vious october 24th found lehigh stak ed up against the muhlenberg elev en which came down from allen town with the idea of giving the brown and white a little setback but lehigh again proved itself too much for them and came out vic torious with a good margin 27 to 0 on october 31st lehigh defeated johns hopkins 33 to 0 as sev eral of the varsity were hurt in the muhlenberg game they were un able to play so it was really a scrub team that gained the victory some of the injured men could have been used but they were kept out so that the strongest team pos sible would be available for the perm state game shortly after this game the fac ulty re\ased their probation rule so that several of the old men were from this time on seen on the field working for a position perm state came down to lehigh on november 7th with every pros pect of being victorious but the brown and white was too much for them and they returned home with their first defeat of the sea son the score being : lehigh 20 perm state 7 this contest bids well for being the best game of the season on november 14th in a game which showed a complete reversal of form on the part of lehigh the brow t n and white eleven was able to send villanova to defeat after a hard struggle by a score of 10 to 0 the last and most important game of the season was played at easton on november 21st before nine thousand spectators lehigh defeat ed lafayette by the score of 17 to 7 it was the forty-ninth gridiron meeting of the rival institutions and resulted in a third straight victory the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday december 4 1914 a new book of
