brown and white team outplays opponents from the start score 40 to 18 crichton and green score majori ty of points for lehigh loom is stars for visitors fast and effective passing feature of contest game won by difficult shot by ritter the annual dinner of the pitts burgh club was held on december 19th owing to the suspension of publication of the brown and white the report has been delayed the dinner was a largely-attended and successful gathering 145 alum ni being present from pittsburgh and vicinity r t morrow 82 president of the club presided and it was owing to his enthusiastic aid that a con siderable delegation was brought from altoona where there are a large number of enthusiastic lehigh men the arrangements for the meeting were for the most part made by r g johnson 04 the energetic secretary of the club at the election of officers g h heil son 85 was elected president r g johnson 04 vice-president ; and g p mcniff 06 secretary treasurer able addresses were made by mr morrow and mr neilson — and dr drinker was called on for a report on behalf of the university he was followed by professor reiter who described the athletic situation and h w dußois 92 then gave a most interesting illustrated address on alaska this was followed by moving pictures of the perm state and lafayette games which were loaned to the club from the univer sity office wrestling practice the senior electricals are on their annual inspection trip to new york city and schenectady n v and are at present at the general electric company's works at sche nectady the entire class composed of eleven members met at the marl borough hotel thirty-sixth street and broadway early on tuesday morning and under the leadership of professor william esty inspect ed the waterside plants numbers one and two of the new york edison company and the thirty ninth street sub-station while leaving the former professor s s seyfert was encountered who at once joined the party in the afternoon the plant of the new york telephone company and western union telegraph company and ithe former's spring street cen tral office were visited wednesday morning was devoted to the new york electrical testing laboratories and the afternoon to the singer and woolworth build ings on thursday morning the power station of the interborough rapid transit company was visited and also its sub-station number thir teen at west fifty-third street in the afternoon the party left head quarters at the hotel for the grand central station at forty second street an inspection was made of the station and at 6 o'clock all left for schenectady via the new york central railroad at schenectady headquarters were made at the edison hotel it is the intention of the party to remain here until saturday noon visiting the g e works and then return to new york city that night when the inspection w t ork will be at an end the mechanical seniors are also on their inspection trip and are making their headquarters at the same hotel the marlborough-blen heim glee club of bishopthorpe manor to render several selections mr tewfik harari son of the first native of damascus to become a christian will be the speaker at the y m c a meeting next sun day evening he will speak on conditions and experiences in his native country mr harari was sent to school at the age of three and at nine years of age could speak arabic his na tive tongue english french and german at eighteen mr harari became a missionary teacher at the scotch school in beirut and three years later he was transferred to jaffa the ancient joppa palestine to be the youngest man teaching in the east later on he taught in the syrian protestant college at beirut syria his own city on the mediterraneain sea this college has an enroll ment of about one thousand stu dents representing twenty nations of the world most of the staff are americans and the language used in teaching is english which lan guage mr harari speaks fluently the college was founded by david bliss d d in 1856 and he has lived to see it grow larger than his own alma mater amherst college mr harari arrived in america as a refugee from the turks he has a most interesting story and has suffered great hardships at the hands of the turks due to their recent uprising in turkey the glee club of bishopthorpe manor under the chaperonage of their principal mr claude n wy ant will render several selections during the evening y m c a meeting lehigh man in the limelight the lehigh basketball team on saturday afternoon december 19 in the taylor gymnasium lost to muhlenberg in a hotly-contested game by the close score of 25 to 23 fast and effective passing was the feature of the contest with muh lenberg having a slight advantage the game was won by a sensa tional shot from a difficult angle by ritter who played a good game throughout the score at the end of the first half stood 16 to 11 in favor of the allentownians then coach muthart talked to the brown and white men and they came back strong in the second period brews ter started the ball rolling in the sec ond half by shooting two pretty floor goals and green tied the score with a foul shot this seemed to give the lehigh quintet a little more confidence in themselves and the game from that point on was one of give and take and indeed it was only a few sec onds before the whistle blew that muhlenberg was able to forge a hf*ad but it was too late for the crown and white had they been allowed a minute more to play the score would surely have been tied for lehigh the stellar lights were : brewster green lehigh graduate of the class of 07 and author of one of lehigh's most popular college songs hail to le high during the last few years has won quite a reputation as a playwright his latest success entitled step lively a musical comedy consist ing of twenty musical numbers and twelve scenes was produced in reading during the christmas holi days by high school alumni and drew the largest audience that ever attended a performance of local talent although this was voted his best effort his other productions the purple cow r ", julius sneezer the snoozer a whirlwind honey moon etc are of no inferior quality the january meeting of the civil engineering society will be held on next wednesday evening at 7.30 o'clock in the physics laboratory building there will be a student paper followed by an illustrated lecture on concrete roads by w a mclntyre chief road engineer for the association of american portland cement manufacturers guests invited to this meeting are : steve burns 14 and the mem bers of the chinese club and the latin-american club football cup awarded the football cup given to the university by archibald johnston m e 89 was unanimously award ed to w c cah all 15 at a recent meeting of the committee this cup is presented yearly by a com mittee composed of the professor of physical education the coach and the manager of the football team to the best all-around mem ber of the football team mr johnston the presenter of the cup is the vice-president of the bethlehem steel company and takes a great deal of interest in the athletics of lehigh university lehigh won her third game of the basketball season last wednesday night when she defeated the leba non valley college quintet 40 to 18 on the home court the brown and white team clearly out-played her rivals and was never in danger during the whole game lebanon valley was the first to score loomis making good on a free shot during the opening min utes of the game but crichton soon followed with a field goal putting lehigh in the lead which she never lost crichton continued his good work and scored four more times during the first half lehigh show ed more promise in this game but there still appeared to be a lack of accurate shooting as a great many tries at the basket were missed many times lebanon valley seem ed lost and lehigh was quick to take advantage of these opportuni ties and the former were very sel dom left uncovered due to the close guarding of green and geyer and were only able to score four times from the field lehigh's guards al so managed to take time enough to run down the floor and add a field goal to the score off and on during the game and when the final whis tle blew they had totaled more points than their opposing forwards toward the end of the game le high had an entirely new team on the floor and they still managed to keep the visiting team from scor ing all but four of lebanon val ley's total count was made during the first half for lehigh crich ton was the 92 secretary of the club by request of the club mr emery gave a talk illustrated with the lantern slides that mr walters has been using at schools represent ing the developments of the uhi a-ersity during the last ten years and as a number of the alumni present were men dating from class es prior to 1900 who had not re cently visited the university these views gave great satisfaction dr drinker
