and reprimands two others when they are convicted of plagiarisms dance planned d last year was organiz contest later leniency was shown but next offenders will receive maximum penalty membership depends upon character as well as scholarship difficulty with mexico is theme of lecture board of control awards letters in two sports competition for varsity places is very keen soccer and cross-country players are recognized basketball candidates are pressing each other closely dr e t divine gives first hand information about crisis well attended gives 22 l's play saturday omicron delta kappa held a meeting of interest to the en tire student body last friday night in drown hall at which time a petition requesting a change in the period of the christmas vacation was pre sented by jack hayes and approved by the organization the petition was subsequently presented to the faculty whose actions on it at yesterday af ternoon's meeting proved to be what was desired according to it the christmas vacation would begin at noon on satur day the 18th and end at 7:45 a m on tuesday january 4th the date of initiation was de cided upon and set for wed nesday december 15th com plete plans have not yet been worked out but a committee is acting on this to make the ini tiation impressive and success ful continued on page four it was further decided that o d k would not attempt to put across the freshman theme contest until the second term of this year it may be of ad vantage to the class of 1930 to the executives of the sword and crescent have several ac tivities planned for the near fu ture some time during this week ceremonies will be held at which two pledges n richard castor and william littell will be initiated into full member ship in the society it will be remembered that the pledging of these two men was one of the features of dad's day on october 30th and took place be tween the halves of the muhlen berg football game election into sword and crescent is up on the basis of leadership and athletic ability and these two seniors were highly honored to be deemed worthy of mem bership in that organization plans are being formulated by the sword and crescent to give a formal dance in the very near future — probably soon af ter the christmas holidays a date for the affair will soon be set and it is planned to make this dance far aboj^e the par of the usual college dances and to make it one of the distinctive social events of the college year chem societies meet in easton e h goldsmith gives lecture representative of bell tele phone cites service improvements seven men five seniors and two juniors had conferred up on them saturday night the dis tinct honor of being brought into eta kappa nu national honorary society for electrical engineers the lehigh chapter of this fraternity held its first banquet and initiation of the year in the cafeteria at drown hall with the old members and the new together with mr f e brooks president of the national soci ety professors seifert hibschman gruber beaver and schealer present t j wright robert sparks george e lewis theodore rights l j heine seniors and howard towle and victor sakandy juniors were the ini tiated in addition to these students professors gruber schealer beaver and seifert were elected to associate mem bership in the society mr f e brook chief speak er of the occasion made an an nouncement which brings a dis tinct honor to lehigh univer sity he said that the national society decided to confer upon professor estes head of the department of electrical en gineering at drop an other student from the course of freshman english and to reprimand severely two others the student dropped from the course was punished for having turned in a theme copied bodily from a collection of cardinal newman's essays and submit ted as a product of his own the reprimands given the oth ers were occasioned by the use on their part of unacknowledg ed extracts from physics texts continued on page four the committee stated that there have been other cases of like action on its part this year and as a warning it announces that these first punishments are mild in comparison to what will be meted out in the future last year in the second semes ter x the committee on disci pline dismissed four men from the university for similar of fenses this year the same drastic action will be employed the committee stated that len iency in punishment usually ac companies its actions in re gard to this sort of thing in the first semester of freshman work in order to bring full re alization to the minds of the swimming meet this afternoon one lehigh team beats lafayette veterans and new men will compete in inter class event sigma chi football combin ation defeats maroon brothers of the forty men who report ed for basketball coach geary has selected a squad of nine teen from which will be picked the quintet which meets prince ton on its court next saturday by devoting much time to skull practices as well as floor work the coach has succeeded in pro ducing a team which because of its heady playing will likely win fame for itself in the east the lack of a suitable prac tice floor has greatly handi capped smooth progress how ever in an effort to overcome this obstacle the varsity has been practicing evenings and engaging in scrimmage with the liberty high team on its floor and with the frosh in the upper gym manager harrier has been allowing the yearlings as much time as possible on the courts in the upper gym the south side high school gym has been engaged this week for varsity practices the team held its first workout there yes terday and will continue to do so while the lower gym is be ing repaired there is no dearth of mater ial to produce a winning com bination schaub and smith in the forward positions are consistently caging their shots while billmeyer and schaub form an impregnable barrier to prevent their opponents from continued on page freshmen sports schedules and modifying the eligibility requirements for participation in athletic events was that of awarding minor sports letters to the cross-coun try and soccer teams in all twenty-two received the covet ed small l captain d g aitken cap tain-elect k b chickering manager d s cunningham h b sames g d lange a l roberts and a h fine are those who have received recog nition for their services in cross-country this fall all of these runners except fine com peted in every meet but the latter made such a commend able record in the important triangular run with lafayette and rutgers and in the inter collegiates that he was adjudg ed entitled to the honor chick ering and aitken are the only men who have won this distinc tion before each earned a let ter in this sport in dr e t davine of clark university in his address last thursday next to our own country mexico is the most important country in the world for us said dr devine and canada follows it but there is a con siderable difference between them for the united states has been at peace with its northern neighbor since 1800 while it has fought during that time a series of wars with mexico the causes of these wars are numerous but not always has the united states been in the right we consider that our territorial extension was blame less that our manner of in creasing our boundary was the only possible one and that it was in every way honorable but the mexican if asked for his side might well say of those territories that they were lost to the gringoes and to the slave holders and through the stu pidity of our statesmen it is therefore no wonder that the united states is not regarded favorably by the mexicans the lecturer then gave an ac count of mexico's history heri tage and economic make-up the country is rich in minerals but not in fertile land and the people are poor most of the mineral wealth the silver mines and the oil fields is in the hands of foreigners chiefly americans racially mexico is an indian nation of the sixteen million inhabitants more than half are pure indian and the rest have a large admixture of native blood the mexicans are proud of their indian blood for the natives whom cortez conquered were a highly civilized people as revealed by modern explora tion the mayas at the time of the spanish conquest and in deed earlier were skilful as tronomers and preliminary start this afternoon when the time trials take place and final places are selected for the first swimming meet of the season at taylor pool tomorrow after noon at four o'clock by means of this meet coach gulick hopes to be able to select capa ble varsity and freshman teams for the season and those who are successful will be re warded with medals for the places they earn in this meet the relay will probably be the first event on the program and although full team quotas had not been obtained by last friday those who are swim ming for the freshmen are lei bowitz scott mccarthy turn the sophomore relay quartet has not yet been picked and the junior men in this event will be wynn o'callaghan culbert son dougherty the seniors need one man to complete the • roster of harmon holmes ral eigh the four teams will un doubtedly be closely matched and keen competition should be in evidence fancy diving will be second on the sport card for the after continued on page four last saturday demonstrating that not all lafayette football teams are invincible throughout the fray the al pha rho gridders had the edge on the men from the phi chap ter the first and second quar ters were non-productive of scores and neither team serious ly threatened the opposing goal line but rathbone and oiler playing for alpha rho repeat edly pierced the phi line for substantial gains and the entire team cooperated exceedingly well considering that it was the first game that they had play ed as a team in the third quarter a sus tained offense by alpha rho with rathbone and oiler again engineering and the public service friday night in drown hall 300 engineers and business men had the pleasure of hear ing a most interesting address on machine switching with special reference to the new automatic telephone mr ells worth h goldsmith chief en gineer of the machine switching department of the american telephone and telegraph com pany of new york was the principle speaker of the eve ning at the combined meeting of the american society of me chanical engineers and the en gineers club of lehigh valley in a brief introduction mr goldsmith mentioned facts re lating to the history of the tel ephone especially the automat ic instrument the year 1926 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the invention of the tele phone and even though the automatic telephone is thought of as a recent development it has been forty seven years since the automatic telephone was actually used the first attempts to put the use of this instrument on a practical basis proved to be fruitless however and it was not until 1895 that the first ma chine telephone office was suc cessfully operated continued on page three mr goldsmith's talk was ani mated and highly interesting throughout after giving the history of the telephone he said that although the automatic in strument is a distinctly ameri can idea it is used in all parts with dr bingham of la fayette college presiding the united chapters of the lehigh and lafayette chemical en gineering societies held a meet ing last thursday evening in the chemistry lecture room of the easton college a fair per centage of the lehigh chemi cals including g v mcgurl president of the chemical so ciety represented the brown and white institution the main incentive of the meeting was to discuss the probable means which will en able the chemical engineering students of either college to be come affiliated with the ameri can chemical society after considerable discussion it was finally decided that a student mj become an associate mem ber of the society upon the pay ment of a small nominal fee membership in this society will entitle each man to a sub scription to chemical educa tion but not to any of the other publications which are issued by the american chemical so ciety in addition each member will be permitted to attend for a half day the annual conven tion during which time there will be a presentation of papers relative to chemistry and its branches an added feature of the eve ning was the short but inter esting talk given by dr gor don of the university of mary land the famous doctor is the present editor of chemical
